Topless Women Protest March In Portland. Maine (Nudity)

PORTLAND – April 3, 2010, About two dozen women marched topless from Longfellow Square to Tommy's Park this afternoon in an effort to erase what they see as a double standard on male and female nudity.

The women, preceded and followed by several hundred boisterous and m More..ostly male onlookers, many of them carrying cameras, stayed on the sidewalk because they hadn't obtained a demonstration permit to walk in the street. About a thousand people gathered as the march passed through Monument Square, a mix of demonstrators, supporters, onlookers and those just out enjoying a warm and sunny early-spring day.

After the marchers reached Tommy's Park in the Old Port, some turned around and walked back to Longfellow Square, but most stayed and mingled in the park. Some happily posed for pictures.

Police said there were no incidents and no arrests – nudity is illegal in Maine only if genitals are displayed.

Ty McDowell, who organized the march, said she was "enraged" by the turnout of men attracted to the demonstration. The purpose, she said, was for society to have the same reaction to a woman walking around topless as it does to men without shirts on.

However, McDowell said she plans to organize similar demonstrations in the future and said she would be more "aggressive" in discouraging oglers.

    • If a naked man walks the streets long enough, he might reach a few miles before someone knocks him out and throws him in a ditch...If a woman did the same thing she might make it a few blocks and the likely-hood she'll get raped before being thrown wait they wouldn't throw her in a ditch they'd keep her drugged and use her as street meat...

      This ladies.....is the real double standard...

    • really great thing to protest...boobs. not gay or civil rights, not starving people worldwide or environmental tragedy enveloping the world, not STDs not pverty, but boobs...what a waste of a protest

    • If more "daughters" were a tad more prepared, by mom n pop,......to use damn near lethal force against the boys, to uphold their space, and protect their pie,............they could swing their breasts like boys swing scrotum,.....and they could,...and should,...and I'm all for ' em !

    • I support the right of women to march through the streets topless... and then the right of all surrounding men to oogle and take pictures. I mean, the ladies always take pictures and oogle whenever I take my shirt off, so you know, fair is fair.

    • I support what the women are doing. I can't think of anything more liberating that a female being at ease with her naked body, in public, like men do. Ms. McDowell may receive a more couth reaction if the women weren't demonstrating, but simply being naked, and enjoying themselves. If men are ogling over breasts then it's the female's responsibility to call the cops for the unwanted attention.

      Keep it up Ms. McDowell. This is the shit we're fighting for in Afghanistan!

    • one thing I did notice in art school about nude models. They could be young or old, short or tall, fat or thin. But man or woman, they were always fairly well endowed.

      i may make 1/3 of a man, and have to use affirmative action to get into a good school due to my gender, but as long as i can go to the beach topless everything is ok?
      really ladies this is your struggle? this is your concern? this is your fight? dear god the rights struggle is taken hostage by dumb ass girls while woman stay marginalized.

      Although I think this would have been exciting to participate in I really have to agree with you HsIV exposed breasts is not our struggle... anyone woman can take her top off and though it may be intended to make a statement that statement was obviously lost when the "pretty woman" began objectify her own body thus defeating the whole purpose of the event itself... ladies...we can do better than this...I hate to say it but mitekillem was right in his comment:

      I doubt many men truly grasped the point that was trying to be made... all they saw was "bOObies" no different from the ones they see at sporting events...
      In my opinion these ladies get an A for effort and a high 5 for those of you badass women who have the confidence to remain nude and walk with pride down those streets but bare breasts is not going to get the world to take you seriously.

      Nope. (Lots of asshole "tags",...but no asshole groups. Just checked- inquiring minds want to know. What a surprise; everyone wants to call someone an asshole,...but somehow no one wants to be one.) I would start it,....but I just don't think I have any more body part zeal left in me. Hey,...I led,....think of me as a "front end loader",....someone else will have to pull up the rear.
