A few weeks ago, The New York Times ran a story expressing surprise at the success of “The Addams Family.” The play had received terrible notices, and the writer seemed almost ticked off; how could a show continue to run on Broadway -- let alone become a major hit -- in the aftermath of such venomous critical displeasure?
The article exposed flaws in critical thinking that abound. The most important is the inability of some to judge a work based on what it is, not on what they want it to be.
“The Addams Family” is an entertainment. That’s all it’s intended to be. And to judge it as anything else is unfair. And, frankly, it is very, very entertaining.
