BP Begins Continuously Spraying TOXIC Oil Dispersants

A BP official is telling The Associated Press that the company has received federal approval to continuously spray chemicals underwater on the massive oil leak in the Gulf of Mexico.
BP PLC spokesman Mark Proegler said the company received Environmental Protection Agency approval and began pumping dispersant on the site starting at 4:30 a.m. Monday. The company plans to continue spraying and taking tests.
The dispersant has never been tried at such depths before this spill and officials have been 'worried' about the effect on the environment.

They're lying about the clean-up efforts. They aren't giving 110% of their time and effort to this. The truth of the matter is they don't know how to stop it. Everything they're doing is trial and error. They know the dispersants are toxic and that they're going to do more harm than good but they need to give the appearance of doing something until they can figure out how to stop this. What they're not admitting is that this part of the ocean is now dead, the coastline is now polluted and will be so for the next 100 -150 years. Help is being offered from the international community but it's not being accepted. Why? Why is that? Certain parts.....KEY pieces of information isn't being made public. Why is that? Some of the most brilliant scientific minds in the world are offering up counsel and options. But untested dispersants are what's being used? Why is that? FYI, this is going to affect more than just the gulf. The current will carry this mess until the entire continent feels the affects. The folks who live along that coast line should consider it a wrap and just count up their losses and leave. Life as they knew it is over.

Dispersants used in the Valdez spill were
later linked with health impacts in people including respiratory, nervous
system, liver, kidney and blood disorders. They are saying that these
dispersants are less toxic, but I'm wondering how they are saying this
since no tests have been done. Also, the chemical composition isn't being
released. You see, Exxon, which owns the company that makes the compound,
is keeping it secret under shelter from competitive trade laws. - 2 years ago

Why don't we just nuke it... there I said it. Isn't that how we solve our problems now-a-days anyway. Send in a drone and drop bombs on all the sea life then the oil can leak where ever it wants to. Problem Solved. (Insert sarcastic comments below)

The researchers at MIT have made a nano paper which can absorb oil from water. The mesh of nano wires can absorb upto 20 times its weight in oil. The paper can afterwards be re-cycled several times. Thats not all,the oil can also be recovered. So that means, we not only save the environment but also the non-renewable resource and money. It can also help in the nanowire paper could also impact filtering and the purification of water.

idk anything about drilling for oil, or engineering, but you'd think that it's possible to measure the diameter of that leak and manufacture a pipe that fits right in and direct it to a collection tank or something like that...then clean up the left over mess with this MIT-created nano mesh "paper" http://biotech-geek.com/blog2/2008/06/01/mits-nano-paper-to-clean-up-oil-spills/
this could be too simple i know, but at least i try ^_^ and this can save money (they dont have to drill) and can also recover all the wasted oil spilled onto the ocean and at the same time undoing the contamination...
Hope this is doable. - 2 years ago

When plan B is to stuff trash into the leak I think it's time for the government to take over. Have BP pay the bill but we need to use everything at our disposal to stop this now. You'd think the government would have a just little more technology at their disposal than BP. Naaa lets just sit back and watch?

Can anyone and everyone who cares about this please DEMAND from your congressmen that the US MUST MANDATE that all new vehicles sold in the US be multifuel capable.
If government WILL NOT put meaningful limits on the oil monopoly---AT LEAST let consumers have the choice NOT to use petroleum.
We need vehicles that can use biofuels and natural gas as well as petroleum, and IN PLACE of petroleum.
Give US a choice and we will do what they(government) won't do. Get us off of oil dependence. It is killing America. It is killing the economy. It is killing our military personnel. It is killing democracy. Our own veterans are trying to tell people that----and they are trying to shut them up by not running the ads. It is time we took America back from corporate greed and business as usual. We need to not buy a single vehicle ever again that can only run on petroleum. And we need to make SURE the vehicle manufacturers get the message loud and clear too.

edit note----{I had first put "Dispersant is not toxic, it is dishwashing liquid and ethanol." However, after reading tbowman131's post---I retract that part. It would appear that the old stand by home brew standard is now sidelined. After reviewing some of the ingredients listed on t-bow's list, I NOW have to change stance. BOTH the oil AND the dispersant are toxic. Sorry for my error----I should have read all the way through t-bow's post before I posted. This does not change my position that this is motivated by PR considerations and not environmental considerations however.}
However, the oil IS toxic. The dispersant allows the oil to mix with the seawater releasing the toxins from the oil, into the water.
By mixing the dispersat with the oil at 5,000 ft. depth, they are hoping it will not reach the surface. The explaination is, that it will not affect birds, fish and marine life on the surface and adjacent wetlands----where it will cause the most damage.
---------" The dispersant has never been tried at such depths before this spill and officials have been 'worried' about the effect on the environment."------
We know more about the moon than we do the deep ocean. We don't even know or have any way to measure the damage this will do. We don't even know what species are living down there yet---let alone what they will be killing off.
I think the only environment BP and EPA officials are worried about is Public Relations environment. The only concern is not allowing the oil to reach the surface where it can be photographed.

The two dispersants in question are Corexit 9500 (known as "dispersant type 1") and Corexit EC9527A (known as “dispersant type 2”). The company that manufactures Corexit, NALCO, has conveniently uploaded factsheets for the two dispersants here (http://bit.ly/99fejp) and here (http://bit.ly/9DOk1C).
According to the fact sheets:
For Corexit 9500:
"Do not get in eyes, on skin, on clothing. Do not take internally. Avoid breathing vapor. Use with adequate ventilation. In case of contact with eyes, rinse immediately with plenty of water and seek medical advice. After contact with skin, wash immediately with plenty of soap and water."
"Component substances have a potential to bioconcentrate."
"No toxicity studies have been conducted on this product."
"If this product becomes a waste, it could meet the criteria of a hazardous waste as defined by the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act"
"Our hazard evaluation has found this product to be hazardous."For Corexit EC9527A:
"Eye and skin irritant. Repeated or excessive exposure to butoxyethanol may cause injury to red blood cells (hemolysis), kidney or the liver. Harmful by inhalation, in contact with skin and if swallowed. Do not get in eyes, on skin, on clothing. Do not take internally. Use with adequate ventilation. Wear suitable protective clothing. Keep container tightly closed. Flush affected area with water."
"Harmful if absorbed through skin"
"Repeated or prolonged exposure may irritate the respiratory tract"
"Excessive exposure may cause central nervous system effects, nausea, vomiting, anesthetic or narcotic effects"
"No toxicity studies have been conducted on this product."
"Based on our hazard characterization, the potential human hazard is: High"

I cannot fathom the fact that there is no coverage of this on any tv news channel. Truthfully, Fox news has been doing by FAR the best job on tv, because it is a chance to diss the present government.
BP and this present crisis is a symptom. The Problem is that our own government is so corrupt at it's core, because it is run by corporatons, because of the need for vast sums of money in order to get elected. It turns out BP has given millions to the present administration (and past ones) - which is why Obama said, OK BP, you take care of the clean up, we trust you".
And i believe this is why mainstream news is covering the death of one movie star or other fluff instead of what is shaping up to be the biggest environmental disaster of all time.
If this doesn't get us off our asses to demand nothing but clean (for real, not coal) energy, electric cars (YES we have the technology - "Who killed the electric car?" the oil companies along with our own government did.), well... i just hope it is ENOUGH.
We beautiful humans are the best solution to the problems our brothers and sisters have caused through their lack of evolution, lack of ability to imagine or care about the future. I don't know how much power the little guy has until there is a separation of Corps and State. But we can vote with our dollars.

And you're right, BP is being left there to play with our environment and do whatever the hell they want with this as it continues to get bigger and continues to be hidden. And in the media today, Obama's USSC nominee pick will be the story du jour. It is absolutely CRIMINAL.

I have to admit, I am having a really hard time thinking of anything else. That is why the lack of tv coverage is so appalling and obvious to me. As for Current, since it was sold to Mtv, the top stories reflect that and not the interests of forward-thinking news junkies.
How can our government claim to have a right to sell or rent this land/water to anyone for any reason, without OUR consent? But in reality, any drop of water on this Earth belongs to every inhabitant of Her. You cannot separate what has happened to the water in the Gulf from all the water and all those who depend on it over the globe. We are intrinsically connected, polluted or otherwise.

Yes, and this is the moral crisis we face. Water is fast becoming a resource we no longer have access to. If you are a multinational corporation you can even buy the water in our oceans and own it, pollute it, then charge exhorbitant amounts of money for its use. It wasn't too long ago I stated it will take a huge environmental catastrophe to wake people up to what climate change and pollution are doing to this planet because of our misuse of resources. And I think we are here and still no concerted moral outrage. If this doesn't spark the outrage on the part of people that we need to make the necessary changes to how we get and use energy and respect our resources, I sincerely doubt if anything will.

julesrs007: I am with you too. This is nothing less than ecocide. There is no such thing as protection from any agency of this governemnt. They have all been sold to the highest corporate bidders. I was looking at pictures of this and there were pictures of dolphins and other sealife having to swim through this toxic muck...and the toxicity will eventually hit humans. BP and all such companies should be tried for crimes against nature and their CEOs imprisoned. But corporations are not considered to be under the same laws as people, so they get away with it. So in answer to your last question, no, humans on the whole are not worthy of this planet.

THIS JUST GETS WORSE EVERY DAY... TOTAL ECOCIDE.
We are desperate creatures with an insane sense of entitlement.
We are a disgrace to whatever that special thing or spark is that is LIFE.
A disgrace for slowly securing the mass extinction of helpless species as well as our OWN EXTINCTION and CHOOSING NOT to change for due to our own selfishness and greed.
We are willing to destroy our planet and all of the innocent beings we SHARE it with, including each-other (mine and drilling explosions, WAR...) for DIRTY fossil fuels.
WE TAKE HER FOR GRANTED.
WE JUST KEEP TAKING WHILE NEVER GIVING BACK.
WE USE AND ABUSE THE PRECIOUS GIFTS THAT NATURE PROVIDED US WITH... SO I ASK, DO WE REALLY DESERVE PLANET EARTH?
