.......hey buddy,....everyone went through the "rat problem" phase.

In the spring of 1976 I was in seventh grade. I had been reading science fiction for two years and had just started bleeding over into fantasy.

One day at lunch I overheard my friend Keith saying, "I listened at the door, and I didn't hear anything, so I went inside and got attacked by a giant rat!"

I said, "What do you mean, you listened at the door? What are you talking about?"
They said, "Well, it's kind of hard to explain, but in this game called Dungeons & Dragons there's a probability that you'll hear something through a door, and my character's a thief so he can hear better. The game just came out. Come over Friday and we'll play."

I did and was instantly hooked. A whole new kind of game. No board -- just dice, just probabilities. It allowed me to enter the world of the books I was reading. I put more effort into that game than I ever did into my schoolwork.

We were all complete outcasts in school -- beyond the fringe, beyond nerds. We were our own sub-dimensional bubble of the school. I'm not even sure we were on the rolls of any of the classes; that's how outcast we were.

D&D made quite a little explosion when it first came out. We were close to the Bible Belt, and ministers were preaching on TV against it, saying that it was a cult,.....

to be continued,...after these dots.................

    • This is cool, but his speech at the White House Correspondents Dinner is the reason I love Colbert. There are plenty of self proclaimed celebrity nerds, but none who have giant brass balls like his.

I agree,...that man can spit satiric hell- fire and then swing-scrotum of molten irony like a wrecking ball knocking parasitic repugnicants flat like so many plutocratic hypocritical self interested pin-head ten-pins!

    • As a child , all the 'games' were based on us kids using our own imagination. Then video games came along and were fun for a bit; before I longed for something that would stimulate my imagination again. Drawing, design and Comics filled that void for me; instead of robbing me of my life( sitting at home pressing a button without challenging my imagination) The effects can be seen in younger generations, where spontaneity and originality become a rarity (one of the sure signs is when people go 'out' and they all show up wearing the same color, black) when there is no quick fix , like a button to press ...

Yes , D&D is as 'nerdy' as it gets but it also provides mental skills that can not be developed with video games. Which is why I don't mind saying that I can respect those that choose to expand on their mental abilities instead of honing a severely limited physical skill of pressing a button correctly. Just one old mans opinion.

Video games are sorta opening up in terms of creativity on the player's part, though (Ex. LittleBigPlanet, Warioware DIY, the upcoming Starcraft 2's extensive modding tools, etc.). Nowhere on par with D&D's approach, but getting there.

    • Reading is my favorite past time that doesn't involve guns, booze or women so I can understand his deep affection for science fiction, fantasy and RPG's. Growing up in Dorchester, I would have gotten my head kick'd in if I played D&D but I still have found memories of Frank Herbert and Dune. I can understand people's obsession with video games but they just bore the fcuk outta of me. I get to do the real thing and I even get paid for it. Still, I like it when a celebrity is honest and shares a cherished and thoughtful memory with the public.

Ha, ha that was cracked me the fcuk'd up. I have no idea why I wrote that "I get to the real thing and get paid for it." I am career military 19D(calvary scout.) In the 1-89th, 2nd Combat Brigade, 10th Mountain Division out of Fort Drum, NY and just began our two month hitch at White Sands, NM before our next deployment to the Logar Provence. So I guess I was being an ass but suggesting that a career in the Military and being deployed to a combat zone was something to make light of or compare the taking of human life and massive destruction to playing video games. I now feel a bit shame for writing that stupid comment.

Love Gears of War, Call of Duty and I also enjoy any RPG. It's pretty funny when I play a shooter online and get my ass fragged by a 13yr old kid, when squad based combat is my career.

Only if I could get back all the money I spent on comic books growing up. I would be fishing off a boat down in U.S. Virgin Island rather then packing my shit and getting ready to go to Fort Hood, TX. FCUK, I feel old for 29!

I must admit that I have,...uhm,...."a few" boxes of those,....nicely bagged and boarded.
( I don't however have Captain America's shield hanging on my wall,....like certain celebrigeek "nationalists" do. I have always admired that particular holy relic.
