Most Offensive Valentine's Day Shirt EVER

Image
asherp
One day I had a TERRIBLE IDEA.

I sketched this little cartoon. I was immediately reviled and offended by my own work. But then starting at it, it seemed so cute, and yet at the same time hilariously callous and evil.

Then one day, I mentioned it to a friend, and they immediately demanded that I make this into a T-Shirt. They now have it and love it.

If you have a serious case of anti-social disorder, or something else really wrong upstairs (like both me and my friend), this may be the perfect t-shirt for you.

4 color screen print (white, pink, orange, and black on Sky Blue shirt) shown here on a woman's fitted cut.

The question being is how many people consider being the MOST offensive to be a major selling point?

Is that REALLY the market that has a lot of potential sales? How big is that niche?

Whatever it is, it missed the target, as you pointed out those slogans could be more offensive with the right designs on them

This is one of the few times I would have any respect for the "FREE" market ; sales would tell the tale,....as it were. If someone wants to gamble resources on something that MAY or MAY NOT sell,.....well,................go for it.
It would not bother me in the slightest if the producer MADE or LOST a million dollars,.......or ten. TASTE -does not equal- market value.

      ....anyway,......soooooooo,...
the "question" REALLY IS "MOST OFFENSIVE" ( or not )----see title of post

      "Should non-PC items sell,.....or not,....is a silly question,..........because IN REALITY,....they either DO,....................................or NOT. End of question.

That was the question I was asking, how many sales are going to be generated by touting the specious claim of being the MOST offensive?

It's not a question of FREE markets since people are just as FREE not to buy it as people are to sell it.

So is that "race to the bottom" of trying to be the MOST OFFENSIVE worth what sales are going to be made? How many people are actually going to be interested enough to pay for it?

also- " I fell down- down- down-------------- and the flames grew higher ...."
      " I wuv U THIS much"
      this doesnt quite "fit",....but
      " WHAT,.........ME WORRY " ? I could roll with that.

    • Not Cute!
I'm so sick of people who think it is "cool" to be offensive just to piss people off.
I personally don't think this topic is to be joked about ever. Anyone who finds this funny lacks empathy for the dead and respect for the living.
I do believe in freedom so I don't think there should be a law against bad taste or consequences for the shirt creator.
      We are free to create.
Personally when I make art I try to keep it positive and ethical.
(P.S the art itself sucks anyways, LAME.)

Very low standards, isn't it? Repeating it doesn't make it any more relevant. You didn't read the whole thing since it takes a lot more interest than reading and commenting.

"this may be the perfect t-shirt for you. 4 color screen print (white, pink, orange, and black on Sky Blue shirt) shown here on a woman's fitted cut."

It's an obvious sales pitch. It's a bit funny, but that doesn't sell any shirts.

I will not admit it's funny because it's not funny.

Congrats you have successfully beat up and mangled one of my favorite icons and changed it into a marketing ploy.

It's about the same principle as drawings of Mohammed, it depends on how much offense, you invest in it.

A lot like a voodoo doll, if the figure that represents the person is completely identified with that person then all the things done to that figure are transfered to the person.

A stick figure drawing of Mohammed or the World Trade Center is used in the same way as a voodoo doll in that all the offense in the idea is transfered to the drawing.

    • Argon18:

It's not the same principle at all. We're not trying to kill you because you made the shirt. We just want to make people aware that you're complete jackasses for supporting such a crude joke.

Fuck Muhammad, he was a pedophile... Muslims have a right to be offended, but they cannot threaten people because it. No one has a right to tell people what they can and can't say, but on that same token, we can't demand people not get offended, or say its silly that they do [actually, you can say it...].

We as Americans have every right to be pissed off and offended about this shirt, though, most of us will try to defend your right and freedom to the death.

      See the difference?

    • Buddha2112:

The difference is that there are a lot of things more offensive so the claim that particular shirt is the MOST offensive is wildly inaccurate.

Especially since the degree is highly subjective to others drawings of Mohammed are a LOT more offensive than that.

AH i see what you're getting at. I can agree it's very subjective, but Muhammad drawings are typically stick figures. In this case it's pretty clear what the intention is [i know its subjective, but much less than a stick figure], which really serves no greater purpose than piss people off and draw on fairly recent horrid memories.

The Muhammad drawings are almost a different case all together. At least with those, there is a point to be made. If people were threatening the makers of the shirt, then i would crusade for shirt makers, but it's just not the case

The marketing ploy fails since it can't justify the claim to being the MOST offensive since a lot of other things can be shown to be more.

All it has is the controversy it can try to drum up because the design is only average and it has nothing else to recommend it.

I actually never intended to sell this as a shirt.
The nice lady in the photo (who makes and sells buttons at Buttonhead.org ) wanted it on a shirt after I mentioned to her that something she had created was almost as offensive as the drawing I'd done while bored in class.

She wanted to see it, and after scanning it and sending it to her, she wanted it on a shirt.

    • Well, I'm having a very tough time trying to remain open-minded about this.

And then, I can still hear the repeated, horrifyingly loud THUMPS as dozens and dozens and dozens of desperate humans hit the ground. I've seen videos and still photos of people jumping out of the windows, and I don't think I'll ever forget that.

I worry about the firefighters, police officers, rescue workers -- as well as the surviving family members -- who may see this, and I .... aw, damnit.

So.... for me.... well, this is not funny. And I AM offended by it. I don't mean to make anyone else feel uncomfortable, but that's how I am feeling. And it sure doesn't make me think of Valentine's Day, either.

      Peace, folks.

Oh, one other thing.... that plane you see on the right, about to crash into the tower?......

Well, that was United Flight 11, and my two friends were inside that plane.

I found out that nowadays a practice which is funny, seldom finds its ground in ethics.

How soon they forget... Maybe if they heard the horrid sound of people hitting pavement and awnings, they'd re-think it. It doesn't even make any fucking sense, what does it have to do with valentines day? It has everything to do with pissing on the innocent dead. I find it funny the post is tagged with "Iraq" though.

Maybe they should wear this into a firehouse and see how long they last before an axe goes through their face. People did fall for others, even for the fuckers who made the shirt.

Well, you see it's a play on the old phrase "I'm falling for you," which is similar to "I'm falling in love with you." The illustrator puts it in the context of September 11th, punning on "falling" to relate to the towers. Does that help?

People who "like" it are just loving the attention of being all, "LOOKIT ME! I'M OFFENSIVE! I'M CHALLENGING YOUR SOCIAL MOIRES!" It's not even a joke or a statement, it's just... nothing. Something for people to get attention with and act all rebellious about. "What're YOU looking at, this is America and I can wear what I want!" Boring.

But it doesn't make sense as a joke or humorous statement. We all know what "Falling For You" means, but what do the towers "falling" have to do with love? You could take any tragic event and put some sort of "cute" saying that is mildly relevant but that doesn't make it amusing. Maybe an oil-soaked pelican with the phrase, "I'm in hot water now!" How adorable.

Oh wow, clever... Yea, I understood that part of it, thanks captain obvious, it's really not that ground breaking, there's just no point in using the towers or depicting people jumping. You can use the same words with trees being cut down, and achieve an almost better affect, there's no need to bring a tragedy into the mix.

Since the towers are barely recognizable and the message of "falling for you" is mostly positive in regards to Valentine's Day it's very mild in comparison.

Yes I have actually since a teacher brought it up as examples in a class on Flash. It is more outrageous than that drawing on that T-Shirt, but certainly you're not equating lines and circles even with photos of blood are you? Much less comparing them to actual blood is ridiculous.

Photos of blood are least one abstract representation removed from actual blood while lines and symbols are removed even more from photos. So how can such a crude representation as even those at stick death be the MOST offensive, and even less that T-shirt?
