You can always trace an IP while it's connected to the swarm. Some people are smart enough to encrypt the data so they don't know what you're downloading as easily, but you need to use proxies if you're going to even attempt to hide your identity. Even then it's still possible to find out who transferred what, it's just a little harder with encryption and proxy networks.

Peer guardian is pretty awesome. I know Utorrent has a built in encryption method which works pretty well. Most ISPs don't give up their clients info, for now. The little steps in between just make it harder for them to pass the info along to the internet police.
Though, i must stress, that if you're doing heavy duty transfers of high value data you can always be found. I've even found that some businesses will put up their data in their own torrents and trackers, just to trace who gets them, and prosecute them accordingly. It's kinda dick, but they'll stoop to any level.

It's just like in Godfather II, when Hyman Roth dropped the 411 on Michael:
"I didn't ask who gave the order. This is the social network we have chosen."

your pho name? You have a name that doubles as a Vietnamese soup? That's pretty hot.

What troubles me is not that the companies downloaded the information (if they really did, since this list has not been verified, and can't serve as proof that it was a company decision to download these), what troubles me is how they got access to it! All the debate about Facebook's privacy issues, and their less than heroic attempts to mitigate the problem seems to just go to waste. Facebook needs to put a double lock on their gates and make sure that when we sign on to Facebook and type our life away, it really is in good hands.

Alright the story is old it wasn't private information, and supposedly if you had your stuff set to private they didn't get your info.
I really care about privacy issue, but come on it's Facebook....
Have a normal social life and quit complaining, I mean if it were Current or another site that has a use beyond; booty calls, egotism, fanboyism, elitism, and stupidity I would care.

Well screw that then.
It seems like more and more the internet is seen legally as a "public" space. I think whether we like it or not, there is no stopping it. Goodbye privacy... Hello ENCRYPTION!
