That is pretty much the deal in most religions.

At a minimum I would have to think that there is a deep, simmering resentment among women in such countries as they learn more about the ways in which Western women live -- even given the inequalities that still exist in our societies. I also wonder just how shallow a man must be to want the women in his family to be at his feet rather than at his side. And what an enormous waste of resources when the insights of half the minds in a country are devalued or suppressed.

Religious brainwashing trumps common sense and humanity. It is Stockholm Syndrome to the extreme. The women are from birth taught that they are helpless and of little value. The men are taught to repress biological urges and humanity. It is not just Islam. All religions repress reason. This is how it continues. I assume the ones that wake up and try to fight it instead of keeping quiet and attempting escape are the unfortunate souls that get murdered in public to shut everyone else up. Sharia is extreme, but psychological tactics in other religions can be just as effective. Socially ostracizing members that have not had more experience in the world is just as effective as torture.

I would like to say it is just shallowness and ignorance but it is far more insidious. Ignorance plays a part, but it is institutional, purposeful ignorance.

I will say what IS happening now in 2010 is so called Christians are boycotting or calling on other conservative christians to "refundiate" the building of a Mosque because OMG its a place of worship but not a place of worship for Christians so of course its not allowed to be built under the First Amendment guarantee to practice whatever religion or no religion if you choose.
