Meghan McCain: Palin Nomination Made Me Cry, 'Who The Hell Is Sarah Palin?'

If you hadn't heard of Sarah Palin when John McCain picked her as his running mate in 2008, you were in good company. Meghan McCain, the outspoken daughter of the GOP presidential nominee, didn't know who she was, either.

"My initial reaction was, 'Who the hell is Sarah Palin?' Like everybody else," the younger McCain revealed on Tuesday night.

In an appearance on "The Tonight Show" with Jay Leno, McCain said that she cried after finding out that her father would run with Palin -- a woman she calls a "time bomb" in her new book, "Dirty Sexy Politics."

With plenty of wild stories in the book, it may come as no surprise that John McCain apparently didn't influence what went into it. He only read it a few days ago and learned some things -- like the revelation that his daughter almost overdosed on Xanax the day before the election. Meghan McCain also dished to Leno about behind-the-scenes dealing with image consultants and the Secret Service, not to mention getting "fired" from her dad's campaign (Leno's term, not her's).

Of course, it's her relationship with Sarah Palin that will spark the most discussion inside the Beltway. "I found out an hour before I went on stage with her," McCain said of the nomination. "I think they were scared I would say something or whatever. Like the rest of the country, I had no idea who she was and I was actually crying on the bus on the way to the rally."

McCain said that at the announcement, "I found out who she was, and I remember being on stage and distinctly thinking, 'God, let her not have any skeletons in the closet. Please God.' And if you see any video footage of it, I looked panicked."

Asked if Palin is likely to run for President in 2012, McCain said she wasn't sure. "I don't know if doing a reality show is necessarily the most presidential behavior. But Obama made anything possible, so I don't know."

McCain dodged a question about whether she would actually vote for Palin if nominated, making it clear she didn't want her to get that far. "I'm Team Romney."

With the release of her book, Meghan McCain has opened up significantly compared to 2009, when she said that, "Sarah Palin is the only part of the campaign that I won't comment on publicly."

    • If you aren't still asking "who the hell is Sarah Palin" you're stupid. Not very often does someone so ignorant and undeserving of attention continue to have 15 minutes.

Wake up, even some of her fervent supporters can not defend her lack of experience, proven nonexistent integrity, and total absence of true intelligence.

    • Well, however you slice it, at least Meghan McCain has treated us to her refreshing honesty. I hope she keeps that up! Not everything about the old Republican Party was bad. In the 1950’s taxing the wealthy and making them pay their fare share was considered an axiom of the Republican Leadership. Who knows, Meghan may work her honesty into one day leading the Republican Party toward a more decent and humane political movement. That would be a welcome turn of events. Keep it up girlfriend!!!

    • Sarah Palin was the non senile member of the mccain/PALIN ticket for the White House. She was one of your father's fellow prisoners, Meghan.

    • The McCain campaign honestly thought that Palin would tap into the electorate that voted for Hillary Clinton over Obama in the Democratic primaries...they soon found out that Sarah Palin is no Hillary Clinton.

    • When McCain brought Palin into the campaign, and I heard some things she said, I knew for certain we'd never be rid of her.

    • What's even funnier is - how the hell did Sarah Palin become the Governor of Alaska in the first place ! Just how stupid are these people who elect officials like this to office. I could see her in a governmental role, maybe working for the DMV or something. But governor ! And possibly vice-president of the united states ! The thought itself was so freaking scary, it was no joke. It's no wonder McCain lost. I was watching this other Idiot governor of Arizona the other night on TV. Can't remember her name though. And just so I don't come off as sexist here - there was also the terminator who became the governor of Kali-Fornia. I enjoyed Arnold's action movies - but running a state with a $30 Billion debt, mainly because the now defunct ENRON Corporation was jacking them up - I don't think so ! When that happened, I said to myself that I would never live in California.
I'll stay right here in New York City. At least here, we are at least smart enough to know when we're getting screwed. Politics - Sometimes it's just to funny man.

Jan Brewer made a fool of herself in that debate, but unfortunately, she is running against a loser like Terry Goddard who has been chasing the governorship of Arizona since 1987. He was a loser then....(I will leave the rest to your imagination)

    • Not since McGovern choose Eagleton has there been such a brilliant choice for VP. If Meghan hadn't been so busy growing up spending mommy and daddy's ill gotten liquor fortune, she may have figured out that daddy and Sarah were patsies for the republican powers that be, who did not want the $150 Trillion dollar rip off to fall at their feet. (Last time the republicans were brilliant and with a little luck and a little ballot box work, they got Bush elected, not once but twice.) But they were right to set these losers up for the fall, because americans are morons and amnesiacs and cannot find their collective asses with both hands. They will come back in droves for the republicans soon. And Obama's one claim to fame will be that he has been a lightning rod for our seething racist underbelly. Stienbeck would have a ball today writing a sequel to "Of Mice and Men."......."When do we see the candidates, George?"

As for the, 'God, let her not have any skeletons in the closet. Please God.' God has nothing to do with it and in the closet were the carcasses of dead animals and a cheer leading costume with bodily fluids from her illicit affair on it. "Oh Sarah, it's Hugh from Playboy on the phone for you."

I really enjoy you scathing sarcasm..well done ! If anyone doubts the collective ignorance of the American people, if the projected win for the republicans comes to fruition in November let that doubt be removed..anyone who would put back in power the party and it's policies that burned through an enormous surplus that the previous Democratic administration left them and then collapsed our nations economy deserves just what they'll get...more war and bigger perks for the wealthiest at the very top.

    • I have to agree with the posts this morning. When I heard about Sarah Palin I knew there was going to be trouble. After McCain had his heart problems I knew there was no way Sarah Palin could be one heart beat away from the presidency. I like John McCain but Sarah Palin made me vote democrat. There is no way she can be on a ticket in 2012 and win.

      Yep.

Over and over right wingers will claim we should regret our decisions to vote for Obama, and to that I always say: do you even remember the alternative?

No mater what you might think of Obama, good or bad, he's a hell of a lot better than what the opposition put forward.

How about an all women (and I mean ALL women) ticket for the republicans? Ann Coulter for President and Sarah P pulling up her rear as VP. Not that's a ticket I would voter for If they could fit Al Sharpton in for some comic relief and Bernie Meyers for ????? you decide, dealer's choice. No, seriously, I swear to God, I would vote for that ticket.

    • Sarah Palin made a whole lot of people cry, when Senator John McCain chose her as a running mate..This was obviously a "senior Moment" for McCain! Many Americans found it extremely funny for Palin to be considered for the position..She was not what Americans wanted to see, only a heart beat away from the presidency..This woman used her poor children as campaign props.. I could never understand why she chose to drag her children on the campaign trail..

    • Palin was not picked because of her political stability or ability, Palin was picked to counter or match the youthful energy that Obama brought to election.

Don't forget the estrogen effect either and to some she's nice to look at. There definitely was a strategy despite what people think but they probably didn't anticipate she was so unread with a tinge of racism.

    • The pick of Sarah Palin caused independent and moderate voters to run from the GOP ticket... John McCain's, 'Country First' slogan became a joke after this pick.
