The comic will play the flamboyant rock frontman in a biopic, co-produced by Robert De Niro.

Peter Morgan - who wrote Frost/Nixon and The Queen - is scripting the untitled drama, which will focus on the years leading up to Queen's appearance at 1985's Live Aid concert.

Queen guitarist Brian May said the choice of lead may surprise many.

"We have Sacha Baron Cohen, which will probably be a shock to a lot of people, but he's been talking with us for a long time," he said in an interview with BBC World News' HardTalk.

"He's been in on this project since we started talking about it seriously with Peter Morgan a couple of years ago."

In the interview to be screened next Thursday, he added: "I think we'll try and keep ourselves out of it as much as we can."

    • Doesn't seem like a good fit. The very sight of him makes me crack up as I remember all the hilariousness he has brought into my life.

    • Even though Bruno let me down in a lot of ways, I still have high hopes in this film. It doesn't say who's going to direct it and I'm hoping someone other than Sacha Baron Cohen, although I agree he is the absolute best casting choice for Freddie Mercury. If this is a more personal biopic meant to celebrate the life of it's subject, like the upcoming Nowhere Boy, then I think Cohen will bring a lot of energy and heart to that role.
Because he is a talented actor and an excellent entertainer.
He's just kind of a goon who makes goonish films.

    • This is quite disappointing. I respect Queen's contribution to rock music, and I respect Cohen's contribution to making me laugh at ridiculous, inane idiocy.

However, my hopes for the successful combination of the two = zero.
I guess I would have hoped for someone more serious in the role, who hadn't spit forth a movie like "Bruno." Good luck taking this thing seriously.

"Queen is one of the greatest rock bands of all time, and a music brand all unto itself - Freddie Mercury was an awe-inspiring performer, so with Sacha in the starring role, coupled with Peter's screenplay and the support of Queen, we have the perfect combination to tell the real story behind their success."

      Production will begin next year.

Baron Cohen - who has two children with wife Isla Fisher - will next be seen in Martin Scorsese's Hugo Cabret. He is currently writing and planning to star in an untitled film for Paramount Pictures.

    • I think he can pull it off.

I think it takes a lot of talent to pull off playing a jackass. Some people are just annoying, or just funny and can't do anything else. Think Tom Green, but if you can effectively play the crazy annoying idiot and do it in a funny way you're probably able to act some. Look at Jim Carey, Will Ferrell, John Lequizamo [sic], Jamie Foxx, all great clowns who've pulled off some great dramatic roles.
