O’Donnell said Maher would provide insight into the crazy political season. After that introduction, Maher dismissed nearly everyone that disagrees with him as either stupid, crazy or racist—with an emphasis on the latter:
Lawrence O’Donnell: Now, serious question. Is it just a coincidence that our politics have gotten crazier since the election of a black president? Or is it the very existence of a black president that’s driving some of these people crazy?
Bill Maher: I think it’s absolutely that that’s driving these people crazy. When they say they want their country back, that’s what they mean, really, is they want their country back to the appropriate time when a white person was in the White House. It’s called the White House, Lawrence. It’s not hard to figure out. But I think it’s also just impatience. I don’t want to cast most Americans as being racist, but I think a lot of them are just dumb. I’m sorry, but they are. They are clueless about the issues. They don’t think further than things are not great, let’s have a change. even though we just had a change two years ago.
I mean, they voted for this massive change two years ago. But because it didn’t immediately start raining 20 dollar bills, they want to go back to the way it was. They remind me of a battered girlfriend, you know, who goes back to the guy who was battering them because, I don’t know, the new boyfriend forgot their birthday or something? I mean, you can’t blame them for turning on the Democrats because the Democrats are so bad at selling what they are selling.
I don’t know if you saw that debate with Harry Reid. But it was exactly everything that is wrong with the Democratic party. And not knowing how to sell a message. He said five times — I counted it — he told the audience five times about Sharron Angle, he said, ‘She just doesn’t get the way things work in Washington.’ Well, you know what, Harry, that’s the one thing the voters like about her. They understand that she’s a nut. They understand that she is the old lady at the end of the block with 20 dead cats in the basement. They don’t want to vote for her, but you just keep reminding them of the one thing they do like about her, that she isn’t of Washington.
There’s no doubt that racism still exists in this country, and that there are some who have a very difficult time with the fact that our president is African-American. But to generalize about all frustrated voters—saying “they want their country back” as both Maher and O’Donnell do—diminishes other, more serious reasons some Americans are opposed to the Obama administration. And ironically, Maher and O’Donnell are guilty of oversimplifying and making generalizations about a frustrated voter base for reasons that aren’t entirely correct.

I think I have to agree with Bill. Having a black president is driving alot of people crazy. They really did not expect him to win. They thought it would be another Jesse Jackson thing. But he did win and by some miracle he is suppose to wave his hands and clean up the mess of the last eight years in two years. yes he has made some mistakes, like trying to involve the republicans in getting our country back together. I find alot of people blame him for not being able to fullfil some of his promises. But remember he is just the president, he has to get by the senate and congress. How many times has the republicans fillabustered thing he wanted to get passed. The party of NO. two years is not alot of time to change anything. People thought that he could make jobs magically appear over night. Like I said he has made some mistakes, but 2 years and people are crying that he has made no change. He wanted universal heathcare, the republicans almost had a baby behind that, so he said, ok let us work on this together and he a some consessions. It is worth nada now. People blame Obama. I could go on but you guys understand what I'm talking about. Right?

All of this is simply a result of the Tea Party making a lot of noise and getting most of the media attention from all sides. They really don't have the numbers to win anything. They are just hurting the Republicans. They are really the sore loser's party and the racists and the religious zealots. It doesn't help that President Obama's middle name is Hussein, that is another kind of bigotry.

Dont be surprised when bill maher says some stuff, he is a comedian by trade and with a lot of comedians there is no line. The stuff most people cant handle when he is saying some that has truth to it. To say the race of our president is not affecting some peoples political beliefs is just ignorant, our whole species is not that great yet, only some of us are.

In defense of Bill Maher, It is extremely obvious that White people hate Obama for various reasons, but many hate him just because he is Black...Hate is a very strong emotion and drives people to do irrational things...Threats against Obama rose by as much as 400% since he was inaugurated..So-called ministers are praying for his death..The airwaves are over loaded with lies and propaganda 24/7, by the Right Wing media..Many Americans are in denial or is clueless about the multitude of racism directed at President Obama.. Bill Maher is a very astute Political Comedian, and it really don't take much knowledge to identify racism...

I respected your and only replied how I saw things. I have heard the argument that it has been two hundred years ago. Ok fine if you want to get technical let me rephrase: with respect to the fact that many Americans either forfeit their right to vote or are not of age to vote, the majority of VOTING Americans placed their vote for Obama. NPR commentator loses job over Muslim remark
".........Williams was discussing political correctness Monday with host Bill O'Reilly and said that it could "lead to some kind of paralysis, where you don't address reality."......."I mean, look, Bill, I'm not a bigot," said Williams, who is African American and has written extensively on the civil rights movement and race in America. "You know the kind of books I've written about the civil rights movement in this country. But when I get on a plane, I got to tell you, if I see people who are in Muslim garb and I think, you know, they are identifying themselves first and foremost as Muslims, I get worried. I get nervous."
NPR's action against Williams comes a few weeks after CNN fired newscaster Rick Sanchez after he called "The Daily Show" host Jon Stewart a bigot and suggested that Comedy Central and other networks were run by Jews. "

Magnificent!!
Lyrics:
Businessmen drink my blood
Like the kids in art school said they would
And I guess I'll just begin again
You say can we still be friendsIf I was scared, I would
And if I was bored, you know I would
And if I was yours, but I'm notAll the kids have always known
That the emperor wears no clothes
But to bow to down to them anyway
Is better than to be aloneIf I was scared, I would
And if I was bored, you know I would
And if I was yours, but I'm notNow you're knocking at my door
Saying please come out with us tonight
But I would rather be alone
Than pretend I feel alrightIf the businessmen drink my blood
Like the kids in art school said they would
Then I guess I'll just begin again
You say can we still be friendsIf I was scared, I would
And if I was pure, you know I would
And if I was yours, but I'm notNow I'm Ready to Start
If I was scared, I would
And if I was pure, you know I would
And if I was yours, but I'm notNow I'm Ready to Start
Now I'm Ready to Start
I would rather be wrong
Than live in the shadows of your song
My mind is open wide
And now I'm ready to startNow I'm Ready to Start
My mind is open wide
Now I'm Ready to Start
Not sure you'll open the door
To step out into the dark
Now I'm ready! - 1 year ago

If literally the only thing different about obama was the color of his skin i really doubt it would make that much of a difference to most of his detractor, they hate him because of his party and his policies. (i'm not saying there aren't people who hate that he's black but most of those hate him for other reasons too anyway) Hes over simplifying the issue to such a degree that he gross right over it. everything is driving someone crazy, to say it applies to everyone similar is intellectually lazy and ridiculous. Hell I'm sure the existence of Bill Maher is driving people crazy.

True. I still ask, where are all those who protested the war when Bush was squatting in the White House? We see nothing of that now. Where are all those who rightfully were outraged at the Bush regime's blanket lack of moral courage regarding our environment that for the most part continues? Where is the outrage at the civil liberties violations that still continue? I can concede that the economic woes we see are not all on Obama, but unemployment rates are still high and many cannot truthfully get ahead much less survive. So again based on the expectations he HIMSELF brought into his campaign, why is it so unusual to see a segment of Americans clearly disappointed and critical because of that?
There are for sure those whites who do not like him simply because he is black ( I truly think the "Tea Party" members running secretly carry impeaching him as one of their goals) but let's not forget there are those of us here who do not pass judgement based on party or skin color, but on purpose, goals, and results. I don't want a president who says he will label GM foods and then appoints Monsanto people to every important designation in the food system! I don't want a president who claims to be for peace yet continues war! I don't want a president who claims to be for the environment yet allows oilsands pipelines to be built through this country! I don't want a president who speaks about freedom and then works to continue the very policies that work to wittle away civil liberties for all! The problem is that people like myself are not being heard over the political operatives on all sides playing politics with his skin color, and that includes Bill Maher.
I don't care what color skin the president has, just do right by the people and stop this two faced policy where he says one thing and does another to appease both sides when he should be on the side of right!

During the fight for civil rights, the groups that assembled in favor were a mix of of white and black, those opposed were all white, there were no organized groups of black men and women in violent disagreement with the notion that we are all equal citizens .... the military is also a mix of races, just as colleges, the work place, sporting events, police and fire departments also reflect racial diversity ...so yes, we do draw conclusions about a nationwide political group that tolerates openly racist expressions through posters, slogans and exclusion of people of color. They very closely resemble the groups that assembled to oppose the civil rights movement and express the same contempt towards our sitting president as they did for the leader of the civil rights movement, Dr, King. Now what could ever give us the idea that beneath all this contempt is a current of racism..hmmm?

Since you like Wiki http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Balanced_Budget_Amendment " During the two terms of president Bill Clinton the country ran a yearly budget surplus.[11]" http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_federal_budget "Since 1970, the U.S. Federal Government has run deficits for all but four years (1998–2001)[48" hm, those look the years Clinton was president. Just one more then im done doing your homework for you. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fiscal_conservatism "After this combination of tax hikes and spending reductions, the United States was able to reduce the $3.8 trillion public debt by $360 billion and create the largest federal budget surplus ($236 billion in fiscal year 2000) as well as the longest period of sustained economic growth in United States history"

OK Chief, you can not have both a debt and a surplus. Get it?
1998 deficit = $113.05 billion, 2001 deficit = $133.29 billion
Do facts elude you? Sorry about your gullibility.
I will not try to educate you. Your reluctance to learning the truth is quite evident.
If you get over your insolence, here's your clue.

Laugh all you want but the fact is you were unable to respond to the question I posed but rather chose to cut and paste a bunch of gibberish concerning the budget surplus during the Clinton administration...since you seem to be fond of cutting and pasting read this and consider yourself now informed of your error...
http://www.factcheck.org/askfactcheck/during_the_clinton_administration_was_the_...
So go argue with the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office, maybe you can convince them they have it all wrong.

Can you show me the "surplus" in this graph?

Truth fears no light and facts are stubbornly nonpartisan. Is there a particular point you are trying to argue, or are you trying to dismiss the information because of where it came from? If it is the amout of national debt being reported that you do not agree with, I emplore you to post contrary information from a source of your choosing. For example, here is a chart from the Democratic Underground. It is graphicly misleading but if you pay attention you can see the truth. The fact is, by this chart, if debt was being decreased, the bars would fall below the base line.

Idealistic? Is that your way of saying that you refuse to believe information and data archived and gleaned from many sources? If you were following the dialogue, you would know that I have quoted no less than three sources. You were invited to bring your contrary data. Instead, you brought ad homonym. If you were following the dialogue you might be able to make a relative assertion instead of choosing your nongermane points a la carte. If you were following the dialogue you might see why the last graph only going to '06 is relevant to the point. And no, the above graph does not (how convenient) include unfunded liabilities while the one above it does. Your grandkids will be paying for the current policy decisions, just as was the case for the previous regeime. With exponential debt growth, there is no such thing as "short-term" fiscal policy.

Because it is a misnomer meant to distract & confuse. Like "Patriot Act" or "Stimulus Package." There is no such thing as "short-term" fiscal policy.

Bill can come across as pompous and arrogant sometimes. I agree with most of his politics, but he talks down to the audience just like the High-and-Mighty Glenn Beck does. Even in the above interview Bill is quoted saying: "Most Americans are stupid." His misanthrope shtick gets old. He's smarter and better than that.

Its true, I mean honestly most Americans just dont have the time or patience to get into politics and sadly the truth is so spun around sometimes that its hard to really understand whats going on. If it becomes a trend, most people follow. The more people say one thing, the more it becomes true even if its not. We shouldnt have to deal with most of this shit but at the same time, if we dont deal with it, things are dealt by the all-mighty power hungry politicians.

Bill Maher has frequent moments where he's nothing more than the political opposite of Glenn Beck. His stale material and baseless diatribes got old a while ago, dude needs to just read a book ffs. The race issue is often times quite applicable in how he's using it here but really can't this "cutting edge" political comedian move beyond such a basic concern?

I hoped I would find in this website a smart and thoughtful debate of ideas. I don't mind people who have opinions who differ from my own, as long as they have an honest and intelligent way to debate and challenge my opinions. I understand racial issues will prompt raw emotions, but this debate seems to be more like monkeys throwing shit at each other than intelligent political discourse. Is there hope for America?
