O’Donnell said Maher would provide insight into the crazy political season. After that introduction, Maher dismissed nearly everyone that disagrees with him as either stupid, crazy or racist—with an emphasis on the latter:
Lawrence O’Donnell: Now, serious question. Is it just a coincidence that our politics have gotten crazier since the election of a black president? Or is it the very existence of a black president that’s driving some of these people crazy?
Bill Maher: I think it’s absolutely that that’s driving these people crazy. When they say they want their country back, that’s what they mean, really, is they want their country back to the appropriate time when a white person was in the White House. It’s called the White House, Lawrence. It’s not hard to figure out. But I think it’s also just impatience. I don’t want to cast most Americans as being racist, but I think a lot of them are just dumb. I’m sorry, but they are. They are clueless about the issues. They don’t think further than things are not great, let’s have a change. even though we just had a change two years ago.
I mean, they voted for this massive change two years ago. But because it didn’t immediately start raining 20 dollar bills, they want to go back to the way it was. They remind me of a battered girlfriend, you know, who goes back to the guy who was battering them because, I don’t know, the new boyfriend forgot their birthday or something? I mean, you can’t blame them for turning on the Democrats because the Democrats are so bad at selling what they are selling.
I don’t know if you saw that debate with Harry Reid. But it was exactly everything that is wrong with the Democratic party. And not knowing how to sell a message. He said five times — I counted it — he told the audience five times about Sharron Angle, he said, ‘She just doesn’t get the way things work in Washington.’ Well, you know what, Harry, that’s the one thing the voters like about her. They understand that she’s a nut. They understand that she is the old lady at the end of the block with 20 dead cats in the basement. They don’t want to vote for her, but you just keep reminding them of the one thing they do like about her, that she isn’t of Washington.
There’s no doubt that racism still exists in this country, and that there are some who have a very difficult time with the fact that our president is African-American. But to generalize about all frustrated voters—saying “they want their country back” as both Maher and O’Donnell do—diminishes other, more serious reasons some Americans are opposed to the Obama administration. And ironically, Maher and O’Donnell are guilty of oversimplifying and making generalizations about a frustrated voter base for reasons that aren’t entirely correct.

Nope, doesn't matter what color his skin is any more than it matters what color his eyes are. after a while we're all going to have a medium skin tone and have asian eyes anyway. I do think Obama getting elected shows that maybe there is less racism than before, can you imagine a black president even 20 years ago? However, I come from a small, pretty white town, so I can tell you there is still racism out there, it's just a shame that the media wants to give those kinds of people a platform. Sadly they can get better ratings by stirring up a controversy than reporting actual news.

"Well, I'm black so I have to ask whites..."
Wow, I don't know. Something about this line of text really just bothers me. It sort of reads like a line of text from the early 20th century. I think it's a bit outdated. You know, talking about people as if they are laundry-sorting categories. You've got to wash your whites seperately and you've got to wash the blacks seperately. You see what I mean?
And, no, my skin is at a perfectly normal temperature because I am not bothered in the least bit about the color of Obama's skin.

I could care less if a President is black, white, green, blue or red. Just so long as he puts what's good for American citizens before what's good for corporations.

jmarkred the point of my comment was that there is no way that you can prove that you are NOT a racist.
And so if a poll was held that asked white male conservatives why they didn't like Obama, how many people would admit that they didn't like him because he was black?
Probably very few, if any. So even if it was true, how does a race baiter like Bill Maher come up with his conclusion that people a "black man in the White House is driving people crazy?" Did he and fellow race-baiters Chris Matthews and Janeane Garofalo go out and take a poll?
No evidence was presented, so we can probably conclude that he is full of crap and just pulled that statement out of his ass.

Excellent post Kenny! I am a big fan of Bill Maher and MSNBC. He's right, most of the teaparty is racist and protesting because a black is in the Whitehouse.

We have a lot of trolls here on current that just like doing the negative thing, don't take it personnel, keep commenting it is your right!

Curtisreed, are we projecting again? You're a fool and will always be a fool. The conservatives and their corporate overlords have stripped us of everything. They've taken our homes, our savings, our retirement, our jobs, affordable medical care and now they're after that last bastion of public wealth, Social Security. You act like all this happened in the last two years and prior to January 2009 America was a paradise. Bullshit.
This has been going on for three decades starting with Ronald Reagan and deregulation. All Reagan did was open Pandora's Box and let the corporate terrors loose. They are the reason things are so bad, not Obama. The US government didn't outsource our jobs, take our homes, keep wages flat for 20 years, trash our 401Ks, institute 30+percent interest rates, not directly at least. It was mostly done with the help of conservatives in Congress who never met a multinational corporation they didn't trust. They have worked for 30 years to undermine the legitimate authority of the US government all the while blaming the government for their mistakes. And people like you bought everything they said hook, line and sinker. You're being played like a tool. FOX "News" won't tell you this, nor will Beck, Hannity, Coulter, Limbaugh et al, because they make tens of millions yearly to keep people like you distracted and angry.
All I can say is when you're eating cat food and breaking shingles off your house and burning them to keep warm, don't blame the US government, because the person to blame will be staring at you every time you look in the mirror.
