From the 1994’s camp biopic Ed Wood, starring Johnny Depp as the real life transvestite filmmaker, to Kenan Thompson playing a very convincing Whoopi Goldberg, men have been dressing like women since they realized that skirts can be quite liberating… and we have watched in fascination.
When Robin Williams transformed into Mrs. Doubtfire in the 1993 film by the same name, it wasn’t just the makeup, wig, wardrobe and boobs that kept us fascinated but the whole transformation of voice, persona and mannerisms. He became her. Many of you may never have heard of Barry Humphries, the Australian actor, comedian and satirist. But, if I mention his brilliant comic portrayal of journalist, talk show host and icon Dame Edna, his/her image immediately comes to mind. What do these women have in common? Big hair, full bosoms and lots of accessories. In fact, some of them sport some sexy legs! (Remember John Leguizamo in To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything! Julie Newmar?)
