Jon Stewart Mocks McCains' DADT Stand

TimALoftis
John Stewart tackled Senator John McCain’s stand on “don’t ask, don’t tell”—and Cindy McCain’s apparent flip-flopping on the issue—on Monday night’s The Daily Show.

Stewart shows clips tracking Sen. McCain’s shifting requirements for DADT repeal and then discusses the PSA where McCain’s wife, Cindy McCain, seems to call for an end to the policy. A day after the PSA was released, Cindy McCain tweeted that she supports her husband’s stand against repeal.

Watch The Daily Show clip here, including Stewart’s own “It Gets Worse” PSA, featuring actor Sean Hayes.

    • Rachel Maddow did the same thing on her show, but she added his immigration policy and his campaign finance reform, which he himself said he wouldn't vote for anymore.

she pointed out that he has gone back on every political view of his, ever. and it's ok to change your mind, but with this much flip flopping how are you supposed to know what this person is about?

he just says what he thinks people want to hear, he wants to keep being the maverick and standing up against the establishment... for what reason I don't know. I could see, for the last 12 years him keeping his reputation going to run for prez, but america didn't want him, so what? try to run again? does he love being a senator THAT much that he wants to be re-elected forever?

The Daily Show ran a piece a couple weeks back about McCain saying about Washington, "look, WE know the system is broken" and something about it's time to fix it. Then he mentioned how that is a stupid comment because McCain is part of the system... then Stewart ran tape of McCain saying "look, WE know the system is broken" since the 80's.

He needs to retire and earn his war hero smart guy cred back because every few months that go by he becomes more of a crazy old man asshole.

    • Scenario: You're a straight dude in the Army. This army has only Women. You're the only man in the army. Do you think you could fight effectively along side them, without being tempted to sleep with one or two of them?

If you're answer is Yes. Chances are either you're a saint, a eunuch, ...or you don't like women.

I get your point but the analogy is a little off. Following your analogy, under the current DADT policy, the man in your hypothetical female-only army would be forced to dress up as a female (i.e., pretend to be one of them) and never tell anyone he was different from everyone else in the army.
You follow? And the man is still going to be attracted to some of the women (even if he is pretending to be one of them), so how is DADT better than just letting the man serve openly with women??

    • the point shouldnt be what mcain said or didnt say. people should stand up and say that if you are against equality you are stupid, period. its an absurd argument. whose business is it who sleeps with whom and why is it a legislative issue? if i want to invent a candyland mythology involving some sole creator and the morality he imposes, its my business, but it has nothing to do with government. people simply need to say this is a simple common sense right, and stop the smoke and mirrors that all the debate of these so called issues creates

    • Here is an idea for a military policy.

      YITMTINPFSSIDMWYsOI.

Your in the military, This is no place for sex. So it does not matter what your sexual orientation is.

sex shouldn't matter but relationships are a huge part of the military. family is a necessity and dadt makes it so you have to hide and deny a huge part of some soldiers lives.

    • whatever. all this pointing and posturing is stupid. people should be able to love, hug, kiss sex and marry whomever they want. if they want to shout about it from the rooftops or keep it to them selves thats up to them. just let people be and stop ll the haranguing on all sides.

    • Make no mistake about it...either with John McCain's help or without it, DADT is going DOWN. It's only a matter of time. If I was McCain, I would not want to be standing on the wrong side of history on a issue that involves EQUALITY

Marriage isn't religious, I've never heard of any of this happening post-vietnam, and boy scouts are only christian because mormons own them now. If you want to pretend to know what your talking about, the least you can do is get at least one piece of information right.

marriage is not only a religious ceremony

i have more respect for the flag than an ignorant hick wearing it as a damn t shirt

i don't spit at any of my coworkers

christian morals tends to be an oxymoron

Well thats a weak argument. try applying it to other major issues in american politics. for example lets use abortion. only people who have had abortions have the right to comment on abortions. this argument i just made about abortion is also a weak argument. Many people will (and should) object to that line of reasoning.

The higher ups in the military told him and the survey where 70% of the military approve also told him, wo what else does he need. McCain has changed so much, I use to have a lot of respect for the man.

he may be drawing from personal experience, but so are the military leaders and 70% of the military. As a senator he said i will agree to DADT repeal if the heads of the military want me to, then he back tracked and said he would support repeal if the troops said to, then he backtracked again and several contradictory arguments. Everyone has the right to point out to him that he's being hypocritical, even if they've never served in the military they are allowed to point out his double take and back tracking. Even his wife and children have publicaly called for DADT repeal.

He is just trying to walk a very weak tight rope on the issue instead growing a pair and standing up for is right. He just wants to be able to say that he was against and for the repeal no matter how the chips may fall.

I don't think the criticism here is, "you don't know what you're talking about."

it's, "you said the exact same opposite thing four years ago." "you said you wanted A,B, and C two years ago, now that you have gotten A,B,C you're saying you need D, E, F too?"

he just keeps making excuses to argue against his opponents. be it republicans who wanted to keep DADT years ago or the dems that want it gone now. He just panders to people to be the maverick.
