I never said anything about me doing it I was merely pointing out the hypocrisy. I do not believe John Lennon was perfect, I believe he was a tortured soul who could not bring himself together and as a result he made a lot of mistakes. But it is not a mans mistakes that make him, it is his success in spite of those mistakes. Men are not made of flaws but rather that scars those flaws have left.

Well, what happened was crystalman did his thing, then congoboy not only agreed with crystalman, but stated that it was a trait of liberal leaders. Knowing him, he's completely ignoring that republican leaders are equally morally fucked up. Then littlwarrior chimed in to say that, yeah, guess what, republicans can be and sometimes are as shitty as republican leaders when it comes to being morally fucked up.

Then you said littlwarrior was trying to say that its ok for liberals to do it if republicans do it, when I took part in the conversation to say that was not the case.

So in essence, littlwarrior isn't pointing out that its ok for libs to do what repubs do, but was explaining to congoboy that he hasn't got a very good stage to preach on about what libs do or do not do to or with their families.

Yes, Lennon was an uber douche. Congoboy was trying to say it's a characteristic in some liberal leaders. He said "sounds like all the best qualities for a leftylib hero" as though liberals search out to vote for these people. As though we admire those qualities.

If someone wants to say that about a group of people, they should be ready to have their statements opposed. If congoboy believes that only liberals have ever voted for douchebags, he's in for an awakening. Republican leaders can be just as bad douchebags as anyone else.

I think when someone attacks a group of people for having a certain trait, that group is well within their rights to point out that the attacker also has membership in a group with those SAME traits. It's not a diversionary tactic, it's more of a "what's your point, dude, you're not much more special than we are. Let's get back to the topic at hand, which is why Lennon is a douche bag, not how republicans are supposedly better than liberals."

And if you, in fact, want to get into the hypocrisy bit, well, republicans have a platform based on family values, right? Well if someone bases their entire platform on policing behavior within families and then goes out to have gay sex and cheating on their wife, is that not also hypocrisy?

They were hardly incompetent. By most estimates our soldiers had a ridiculously high kill/death ratio. Hell it was the strategies we used that caused us to "lose"(sue for peace) the "war"(police action) not the actions of the soldiers themselves.

The problem was also who they were fighting. Its difficult to distinguish guerrilla troops from the general populace... which in part led to many mass killings of civilians. Had the gloves come off and there been a serious invasion of North Vietnam with sustained aerial bombardment the war likely wouldve ended much sooner and in our favor. The soldiers didnt lose the war... the politicians did.

maybe if they'd played it like high school gym. bad guys, no shirts. good guys, shirts. then all lookin alike wouldnt have been such a problem. or possibly cosmetic surgery of some sort. like giving the enemy round eyes, err... ah... whoops, then we may have had more cases of friendly fire. bad idea

Our troops are having the same problem in Iraq and Afghanistan as they did in Vietnam... how do you fight an enemy that doesnt have a uniform or even a chain of command? How do you distinguish a bad guy with an AK-47 from your tribal allies when they wear the same clothes?

Bullshit for the masses? No its called military history. Had we actually taken the gloves off and targeted North Vietnam directly instead of just fighting a defensive war in South Vietnam the results would have likely been very different. Our forces avoided the Ho Chi Minh trail, the major supply line of the NVA for almost the entire war because it cut through Laos. As a result all the North Vietnamese troops and Vietcong had to do was keep throwing their soldiers against us in waves til we finally succumbed to the negative public opinion of the war. We lost because of politicians and the anti-war movement back home not because our soldiers were incompetent.

Afghanistan is very similiar in that public opinion has shifted entirely against the war. However Bush is to blame for the failure of the war. Had he not shifted hundreds of thousands of troops out of Afghanistan to invade Iraq for no reason we wouldve been done there years ago. Instead the Taliban and Al Qaeda were given plenty of time and breathing space to regroup and rearm in Pakistan and they came back stronger than ever. Obama inherited that shitsandwich from Bush. I dont particularly like Obama's "strategy" if you can even call it that but i just want to get the fuck out of there now. Theres no "winning" there anymore.

They wear civilian clothes and blend into the population making them extremely difficult to target.

And im sorry but in what world is losing Millions of people in comparison to 60,000 American lives "kicking our ass"? The war was brutal and unnecessary but facts are facts. And the fact is politicians and the peace movement did more to end our involvement in the war than the Vietcong or the NVA ever did.

Of course casualties had an effect on morale... however it was the images of American massacres of Vietnamese villages, pictures of napalm burning childrens faces off and the sheer length of the war that really had a negative impact on public perception. Well that and the Pentagon papers which detailed how the US government had been lying to the people for over a decade about the war.
