Stupid thief steals $1.5m in mostly useless casino chips

The unidentified thief entered the casino in the early hours of the morning, held up the table's croupier at gunpoint, stole the chips and then made his getaway on a motorbike. It could have been the perfect crime, if only he'd bothered to steal something of tangible value.
Strict controls over Las Vegas casinos may make it difficult to cash in the chips anywhere other than the Bellagio. Chips are generally unique to specific casinos and are typically not interchangeable. So unless he manages to sell the chips in smaller loads to other people, or cash them in at the Bellagio in small amounts over a few years, he's basically stuck with a lot of plastic discs that are more hassle than they're worth.

Reuters report just arrived in my inbox regarding the gambling chip thief.
Saying:Vegas City Police are questioning two cistercian monks of the identity
of the gambling chip robber.Due to the fact that the monks, who occupy a
monastery on the outskirts of the city and are devoted to their self sufficiency,
producing their own food, wine, ale, mead an honey from numerous bee hives
etc.All the monks have their allocated duties. The two monks assisting the
police, have the duty to visit the numerous churches and chapels to collect
gambling chips that visitors have donated into the collection boxes, these are
then taken back to the monastery where they sorted out and then returned to
the various casino's and cashed in and the money is given to various
charities, the two monks are quite famous, having both appeared in a Walt
Disney film some years ago, they are of course 'The Chipmonks',what else?. - 1 year ago

What about the LFID in the chips? When they go to cash in the chips they will be ratted out by it. I'm not sure but I believe that all the large denomination chips have the LFID .

Quote - "he's basically stuck with a lot of plastic discs that are more hassle than they're worth."
Really? I'm sure it's not too much hassle to send his girlfriend, mum, dad or anyone else he trust in with a couple of thousand chips each week to cash.
The stolen chips are not uniquely tagged, so even if the casino where to change all their chips now, they must still honour there old chips as many people do not cash there chips immediately!
