Van Slams Into Tualatin Gas Station

TUALATIN, Ore. -- An intoxicated driver who crashed his van into a Shell gas station off Interstate 5 in Tualatin told officers he had a bomb in the van, police said.
Officers evacuated the scene at 7090 Southwest Nyberg Road and called in the Portland Police Bomb Squad at about 10:30 p.m. Monday night. Technicians later found no evidence of a bomb in the van.
Witnesses said the man earlier tried to pump his own gas but lost it after an attendant stopped him.
“The guy drives up to the gas station door, slams into them, knocks everything down,” said witness Bryan Jackmon. “He didn’t make it through the first time. He had to turn around and then went through and this time he got all the way in. Then you could hear him just driving around. I was still in front of my car watching him drive around on the inside.”
Police say the man also tried to pull a woman out of her car in an effort to steal it. He then jumped into her car and assaulted her, they say.
“He was trying to carjack people in the gas station’s parking lot, and jumped in this lady’s car,” said witness Alanna Moe. “He was hanging out the window and she was honking the horn, screaming. He’s like, ‘Just come with me.’”
The driver of the van, 33-year-old Zacharias Serrano, of Lakewood, Wash., was taken to Meridian Park Hospital for evaluation. It was determined that alcohol and drugs were factors in the incident, police say.
After being released from the hospital, Serrano was taken to the Washington County Jail on several charges, including recklessly endangering another person, second-degree kidnapping, first-degree robbery and driving under the influence of intoxicants.
There were no reports of injuries to anyone who was inside the gas station's convenience store at the time of the crash.
The exit from the freeway was closed Monday night because of the crash and investigation.
