MSNBC HOST SCARBOROUGH UNLEASHES ON BECK: ‘LOSING IT BEFORE OUR EYES

twinite
On MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” this morning, host Joe Scarborough delivered a scathing rant against Glenn Beck. According to Scarborough, Glenn is “losing it before our eyes” and is “bad for the conservative movement.”

“He’s bad for the Republican party. He’s bad for Fox News. It’s that simple,” Scarborough said, referring specifically to Glenn’s recent work to uncover the socialists, progressives, and unions behind the unrest in Egypt and Wisconsin.

Guest commentator Pat Buchanan added that Republicans have a “responsibility and a duty” to make sure Beck isn’t speaking for conservatives.

Scarborough refers to a recent blog post by conservative writer Peter Wehner calling Glenn, “The most disturbing personality on cable television.” I talk to Pete from time to time and have a good deal of respect for his analysis most of the time. I found his most recent posts on Glenn, however, to be pretty shallow. It’s a popular sport to make dramatic denunciations of Beck themes without really engaging in a discussion of the arguments.

I’ve been involved in mainstream conservative thought and politics for 25 years and I can assure you that Wehner and Scarborough are mounting a very weak case. I’ve worked with many top conservative leaders and politicians. Glenn is about as thoughtful and sincere in his approach to political argument as anyone I’ve met. The depth and range of discussion around the Mercury and Blaze offices is the most interesting and electrifying of any place I’ve worked.

This weekend I’ll be posting a more thorough response to the Wehner/Scarborough arguments. For now, watch the clip and help kick start my weekend response in the comments!

    • All of the talkers on the MSM are actors and are paid to do what they do, and we've seen them all "lose it" at one time or another. That goes for both the left and the right.
If you think that they have much independent input into their programming, or not reading from a carefully prepared script 90% of the time, you are living in a fantasy world.

    • the conspiracy theories are just fun to watch, so is all the infotainment on T.V.. most of the stuff on youtube has been on the history channel at some point, or the news, the problem is when they think there the only ones who know, and they go crazy and do stupid stuff, like the kid in arizona shooting 6 people. Positive change is needed. one love

    • The craziest thing about Beck is that people have to actually make the statement that he's crazy. Should we as socialized Americans know he's crazy.... why do we need to actually be told!?

    • Something that Joe has missed is that FOX "News" is not politically biased towards the right, they are biased towards MONEY. That's why Murdoch keeps this fool on the air even thought he threatens the cohesion of the right i.e, he ups FOX's numbers and with it, their ad revenue. It makes no difference to Murdoch if Beck burns the left, center or right as long as he keeps the money flowing to Newscorp.

There are only two conditions that I can foresee that would force Murdoch to remove Beck. (1) he melts down on TV in a manner that even the simple minded that follow him will see as a nervous breakdown, (2) he no longer brings enough revenue to FOX.

    • So the conservatives don't like the propraganda beast that they gave birth to? Well isn't that a shame! Pat Buchannon should be proud, after all He is the one that called for a "Culture War" at the 92 Republican convention that started all this.

Now that it has gotten out of hand they want to distance themselves from it. The Republicans obviously do not want to accept responsibility for their past actions. Just like these schoolyard bullies to come over, break the toys, and walk away. Somebody has to be held accountable. But which one????? All of them.
If the Republicans didn't start this campaign of interfearing with, and control of media, or at least what gets reported on and what doesn't because this sponsor or that one may pull their ad if something damaging gets mentioned about their company. (Example: How much coverage of the Wisconsin protests were covered by the main stream media so far this weekend?) I haven't seen any on my local stations. Why? There were supposed to be rallies in every state capitol yesterday were there not?

I think we should treat them all the same. In other words when we are informed that the person we are talking to is in fact a Republican, then we should treat them like they are a diseased nut. Like their all Glen Beck clones. Immediately become standoffish and treat them with sympathy. Like there is something wrong with them. Staire at their forhead and show fake concern for what they say. You will be suprised at the results. It's good fun, really.

I have an ultra-conservative family member I do this to all the time. Boy does he get pissed.

    • PeteLeS33:

You are right about show sponsors. There were two ads online i thought were really disgusting. One of them, if you remember was for olay, when the alarm went off, and a narrator said "wake up". I was so pissed about that ad (at 2am who needs it). I haven't seen it since. The other was for Tide and I emailed them. The funny things was they emailed me back with all these apologies, and said they would send me some coupons. Of
course, they never did. Not that it took one call, my guess is others ranted also.

PBS News Hour has been doing a good job of covering the protests. Hope they keep it up.

I was frustrated about coverage for national protests. There was even one in dc that didn't get any attention. I tried like heck to find a protest in my town. Even went to the union websites, and to the usual protest spots. I don't know where they were. I put a sign on the back of my jacket that said "unions work for all of us." Oh, well. I was a protest of one.

My ultra con fam members just shake their heads back at me. I can't figure out where they came from. Our dad was union. Our mom taught. Three of us kids are progressive, (my bro was a union steward). The other believes GB knows (at least he used to, hope he's gotten smarter. Their kids are divided. Family, whew. We avoid politics when we get together.

    • I have a question for Beck and his supporters-According to Beck Islamic terrorists are getting ready to take over our country to govern according to sharia law. And where will Americans be while these Islamic terrorists begin their invasion of our country? Do you think that we'll just sit here and watch tv while our country is taken over? What about our Army?, our Marines?, is there some kind of magical dust that will make them sit back and let it happen? Beck claims to love this country so much, yet he doesn't have much faith in those who are defending it. I don't know about beck but i'm guessing most americans would stand strong together. But people like glenn, who sees the boogie man around every corner will he hiding in a corner somewhere

So, before I move on to those people,... what I have been reading would make rush and glenn proud. Many of you sound just like them. You think you are something special because you are so 'in the know'. Yet you are unable to express yourselves beyond insults, name-calling, and sounding like kindergarten bullies. I hope I am never on a picket line with some of you.

You seem to be taking this story to a personal level, while I, speaking entirely for myself, found it to be rather humorous. Two men I have zero respect for dissing one another, or rather Joe dissing Glenn, as far as I'm concerned is worthy of playful and insulting comments.

      To twinite and coolplanet...

okay, I'm here to take my shit! I am a snoot sometimes.

I didn't take it personally. I took it philosophically. Philosophically, I think putting violent rhetoric out there is no better than Palin's lock and load BS. I am a peacenik.
And , oh ya, I absolutely cracked up when I saw it. I just don't want to threaten him. And I do get tired of the same old name-calling, I'm not going to apologize for that.

Playful insults, oh ya, threats, sorry I just can't go there. And anyone is welcome to insult me for that, but I'm going to call it out. I do think some of the comments sound just like rush and glenn. And ya, you could justifiably tell me to get over myself. But that is not where I was coming. However, you are right that it is not about me, it is about us.

And I will be more selective because I'm on this site to learn things, honestly, not to make fun of people. Okay, not all the time, and not too nastily. I should have figured people who responded to this vid would be just the way they are.
Actually, I know, how could people stop themselves, it was too much of an opening.I

I didn't make it any better by insulting some of the people on the site, and I heartily and sincerely apologize for that. I will be kinder in the future.

And I'm glad you called me out on it. I may not always agree. But I'm glad for others viewpoint. Peace??...

The problem that Republicans have with Beck, is that he has gone rogue on them, and is spilling the beans of their truths!

    • It's my analysis that Beck has either gone Rush on us; ( hooked on oxycontin or it's equivalent ), or just as likely, is descending into some sort of mental illness. With no malice, it seems to me that he has gradually morphed into the maniacal character he now is. Could I have read or heard that he has a past mental health issue? Or, did he have a prior substance abuse issue? Something of this nature is chirping in the back of my mind.

i had a friend who was a paranoid schizophrenic. There was a time he was really pretty normal. Over the years he began to think people were plotting against him, he would go off on these wild eyed rants. He had conspiracy issues, thought people were spying on him and i have to say...when glenn started screaming "LOOK AT IT...LOOK AT IT" while pointing to a cluttered chalkboard he reminded me of my friend....out there. Besides all of Mr. Beck's "visions" never came about. No death panels, no armed irs agents - all lies. So why is it that so many people believe someone who is consistantly wrong?

By her sitting there rolling her eyes everytime joe says something wacky instead of getting more involved with the conversation. It's almost like she's afraid to speak up in fear that joe would act like a smart ass

so fox news has monster ratings cuz they are just awesome.not cuz they fear monger (terrorize) people into relying on them for the impending doom they assure is to follow, or the fact that conservatism is classicaly an older persons game and thier demographic is between 50-90.people who have nothing else to do but watch conevative news as it is a throw back to the world they long for.

but msnbc is failing despite showing this same material?that is like claiming hbo series do better on hbo and less well on network tv.if the material msnbc offered had such a heavy volume of fox on it, msnbc would split that demographic not appeal to another.

    • Maybe it isn't news, but it is inspiring to hear GB criticized from this quarter. The Republican party is walking away from sanity and moderate members don't need to be prophets to be discomfited, especially when they imagine the future. It is a difficult choice for them. Align with Wack-jobs or Democrats? Until we can change some "conservative" minds, the best we can hope for is seeking common ground and making compromises. We on the left don't have much choice except to broaden support for our agenda if we want to do more than carp. We can move to the middle, and add to our supporters by organizing low and middle income Americans and changing some minds. A lot of GB listeners are buying into political views that are not even in their self interest. I guess that is part of being an ideologue.

Because facts are boring. Glenn Beck is more entertaining, he confuses people with his blackboard scribbling, pointing out the most outragous things he talks so matter-of-factly, as if he's in on some inside information. He then looks at the camera and asks YOU why is it that WE'RE the only ones getting it. So now even if your as confused as the rest of us your too intimidated to ask questions because after all glenn did say WE were the only ones smart enough to see what is going on, This is his he works.

The tar and feather thing really bothers and kinda hurts. I remember the days when dark=skinned people were tarred and feathered. It is a horrible thing to even consider. I know, freedom of speech, but please consider the historical context. I'm white, so I'm not defending some imagined ancestral legend.

We can hardly complain about abuses of war overseas if we would even joke about such a vile course of action. It is not funny, cute, or entertaining. Are we so numb that any of us feel like we can say anything we want without consequences? This is the 2nd time I have heard the t and f thing. Bone up on a little american history. I'm not going back to the 30's, 40's, and 50's no matter what the excuse.

So here he is bemoaning Beck and finding it not so pleasant to see what they've actually been thinking verbalized. It's great entertainment to watch the "Conservative Movement" implode.
