I think changing the channel is a knee jerk answer.
I assume that you guys realize that kids will watch tv at their friends house and they cannot be policed.I would like answer by saying parents should watch these shows with their kids so they can annotate what is going on.

I agree - reality shows, you tube, explicit language, porn, chat rooms, tiny chats, are everywhere - it is impossible to totally block it from your children. MTV is small compared to what is available on the Internet.
Spend time with your children, know their friends let them hang out at your house. You learn a lot from their conversations. Take that opportunity to talk to them about what is appropriate. Don't condone it - just use the time to discuss consequences.

Back in the 90's there was a documentary on Frontline on PBS titled "The Merchants of Cool". I watched it by myself first after which I made all of my children (12 thru 17) sit down and watched it again with them. Afterwards, I asked them if they realized that they were being manipulated by guys in 3 piece suits in a board room some where. They had no idea up until then who was deciding what they were having fed to them as the latest "cool" thing. It was an eyeopener for them and to this day they look at the latest and greatest whit a jaundiced eye. This a link to a synopsis of the show.
http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontline/shows/cool/etc/synopsis.htmlI suggest every parent find a copy and sit down with your pre-teens and teens and watch it. They may not like what is being done to them.
And as others have commented here, turn the damn station!

How is this new?
Dawson's Creek had a story line about a an affair between a teacher and a student, Pretty Little Liars has one too- I'll bet the OC, 90210, Gossip GIrl, and every other teen drama all have that story line.
How far back you want to go? I think Fame had a teacher/student relationship back in the 1980's.
What's the very first TV show set in a high school? I bet it had this story line too.

You're about two months late to the latest moral outrage party ibrakes.
Here's what you missed :
The show was originally British, and is far more explicit there, no one cares.
Teens do not magically develop sexual feelings at 18. they usually start at 12, with some girls developing them as early as 8. The vast majority of people start having sex before 18, boo hoo.
Fictional accounts of the real world no more "encourage" that behavior than anatomy pictures inspire self-mutilation. People, believe it or not, aren't that stupid. So who cares that a teacher had sex with a student in a made-up tv show.
No one needs to be "sexualized." Human beings are incredibly sexual creatures. One does need to conditioned into being ashamed of their body though, so the moral panic over shit like this is always ironic.
Stop hiding behind "the children," they like this shit, willingly. This is about your shame and your fear that your kids will be different from you.
And, lastly, the Ancient Greeks were one of the remarkable civilizations of the world and are responsible for a great deal of our current existence, and they also had a hyper-sexualized man-boy pedophilia culture which pervaded for hundreds, if not thousands of years. The Romans weren't much better. Yet no one's society collapsed, I wonder why?
The shame we attach to these issues is far more serious than any actual damage could ever be. In that sense, it becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy. "Look at how bad this is for our society because our society has arbitrarily decided this is bad."
The world will keep spinning, I promise. Your kids will grow up to be just fine even if this is their favorite tv show. Although they may grow up to be boring, useless and stupid, good chance of that.

Im going to have to disagree with you. I thought the same thing when I first saw the previews but when i actually watched the show I realized the show is trying to send a deeper message. Yes it shows Drugs, sex and violence but it also shows that the ALL of the kids are unhappy and one by one it shows why they kids behave the way they do.
PS: if you are unhappy about the way Television is raising your kids then i suggest that you raise them instead.

The original British Skins is even more scandalous. Skins shows a definite reality that we in the US don't want to acknowledge, teens are having a lot of sex, doing a lot of drugs and partying extremely hard. Yes, Skins does influence some kids to do these things but many of them are already doing it. We need to have resources for these kids such as comprehensive sex ed and things like Planned Parenthood. More involved and honest parenting will also help.

Crunchy , can you define the real problem that is bugging you ? One sentence ? Scapegoating is no way to actually solve REAL problems . MTV ain't life . You have to look at life . It is an act of courage ad not many people have it . The way we live , is the problem . Hard to solve , that one . Especially if you aren't looking at it . Can you even define the real problems ? That is step one . Define the correct problem . That is one part of the battle . Second part ? Open dialogue between all parties . Collecting data . that's not even mtv's message, the "fuck you, you owe me."
if anything the conditioning mtv would do is: "you're all so fucking hot, go get famous and live in this huge crib-- do it before you're 15 so you can have a kick ass sweet 16."
there's no social welfare stuff on mtv.
even their good-ish reporting of True Life sucks after the news ladies of Serena [don't know how to spell it] and (i'm at a loss for names) the asian left the channel, now it's all different versions of "naughty" or "sexy" or fat, drug addict, or mentally challenged people dealing with stuff day to day-- hardly investigative.
so if your definition of liberal is "fuck you, you owe me" then mtv is not liberal-- hell i hear "you owe me" more from conservatives, it may not be "owe me money" but they sure do like to recoup their land, values, prayer in school, teaching of creationism, a mosque free country-- they're definitely whining for what's "theirs."

skins is crap, not well acted, not compelling storyline, they took the fashion and sex appeal of the british version and chucked the rest of the show so they could sell it to advertisers.

is that last line a question to me? why do i think fox is dangerous? or is it rhetorical?
i'll assume it's to me: because fox claims it's news. fox claims that they're fair and balanced. fox claims that they report & you decide. mtv doesn't.
mtv doesn't claim the mantle of what you need to know, they don't pretend like you should learn life lessons from skins, or that watching cribs is instructional home decoration programming. they're just entertainment tv, you watch (with your mind off) and move on.
fox's claims would lead you to believe that they're telling you the truth and giving you the information you need to live your life-- but if you use their blueprint you have to be scared the racist socialist, muslim who faked his american birth and stole the white house with the help of acorn. you would be expected to believe that teachers are overpaid and raping our economy while corporations are just struggling to make ends meet so they can provide americans all those jobs they have to give us. what with the economic uncertainty, and the fact that our tax rates are higher than other parts of the world (even though they don't pay taxes) that it's no surprise that there is no work.
depending on who you get your facts, your lessons, your truth, your spin-free news, you believe that obama is a pin-head, lying to everyone, bringing on the collapse of this country and ruining the great pristine america that existed before him.
that's why fox is so dangerous. if they just presented themselves as a conservative editorial channel, that'd be fine, but they claim that to know what's going on in the world you should listen to them-- and that couldn't be farther from the truth. it's been proven that fox viewers are more misinformed on the world than watchers of other channels, that's dangerous. stupid people hating teachers and science and minorities leads to a stupid, theological, reclusive white country-

as for ruining individual children, yeah just let them watch it. But I do feel that Mtv has a powerful effect on kids as a whole. Firstly it is one of the leading reasons that music is about commercialism and sales much more than dumb things like musical talent. Secondly, as someone who recently survived high school and finally went to college, I can tell you that people try very hard to emulate the types of people they see on Mtv (the drama queens, the rich spoiled pricks, the queen bee, etc) and they feel like it is their duty to act this way because they saw it on Mtv. So yes Mtv (as well as many other things) is contributing to the down fall of children, teenagers and humanity as a whole.
Also reality tv needs to be stopped, science (and cracked) says so ;)

MTV hasn't stood for music television in a long time. Do then even play videos anymore? VH1 used to be better, but it's that same way now.

Why don't you really listen to glen beck, or talk to your kids. There needs to be more parental control and less expectations from paretns to have everyone else fix the issues

Glenn Beck talks about faith, hope, and chairty. Things which i want my kids to know about. But to he honest i wasnt expecting this to turn into a political argument.. (Not everything in life has to be about left vs. right)
I was just ranting about a television station that no longer is true to its name. Heck. even TRL with its 30 second videos was worth the watch sometimes. I just want mtv to go back to its roots. But i guess that hard to do since were living in a generation where you can watch music videos in an instant on Youtube
