New Nigerian Scam!!

Image
KSirys
Well, it could be a local scam as well, but the guy over the phone (Andre Stewart) had a funny accent.

Let me tell you about the new scam...

So I got call around 10ish today and since I was watching tv and didn't want to be bothered, i let call go directly to my voice mail. When I checked my phone at around 12pm, I noticed the number had been blocked but the person had left me a message... and this is what they left.

"Hi, this message is for (my name), my name is Andre Stewart, calling from Bank Of America, in regards of a certify check and we wanted to tell you that you are the lucky winner of a lottery from global international speech something, American board.... " Here's the number they left me and it works... 866-553-6607, I think i clicked on two, for customer service... you guys should call! lol..

Now, i don't usually post personal scams on here but this one was creative and they had my personal name and phone number... how they did that? i don't know... but it was funny to know that after i called them and asked them how i won this "certify check", they told me not to worry, but that i had won $75,000 and for me to receive it, they would need a "processing fee" LOL... i did try to hold on and not laugh, but I was so curious in knowing who this was and what more information I could get... but i just couldn't and after telling him that i didn't have any way to pay for the processing fee, that I would give half of the money if they would send it to me first... "Andre" was so upset and of course, me trying to stop laughing, that he got upset and hung up on me... lol....

Folks, be careful!!! I know you are smart, but we do have family members out there that are not always 100%... so please inform them of this new scam and let them know that, any legitimate company wouldn't be asking for a "processing fee" or call from a block number if they were real.

Have a great week current!!!

BTW, please don't post pictures of people here... unless they are guilty or are known to be guilty, putting a picture of a person that we don't know anything about is wrong... please share creative pics! Enjoy!

    • They always say that con-artists have "above average intelligence", as if the willingness to steal from a stranger takes brains rather than lack of proper socialization.
The only difference between these guys and the average stockbroker, multi-millionaire or lawyer is that they're small time.

    • I never pick up any phone number I don't recognize (I let it go to the answering machine)or respond to any e-mail from an address I don't know. You're just inviting trouble if you do.

    • A bit off subject, but......I once heard of a guy who worked from home and was constantly being interrupted by telemarketers. Well one day the phone rang while he had plenty of time and was in a playful mood. It was a carpet cleaning business offering to clean a room for free. He went into this huge routine about needing their services immediately if they were able to clean up blood, because if was everywhere. Even offered to pay them double if they could do the job on the QT......long story short, the carpet cleaning store was so upset by this that they sued the guy.....and lost.

      The "bailout" was bush's baby.
Remember Paulson went to congress with a ransom note for $700,000,000,000.
"Give us the money or we'll destroy the entire financial system of the world. Don't call the cops or investigate where the money is going. We know where you live."
I think that was the gist of it.
      Talk about scams.

    • A few days ago I even got one of these scam messages via my facebook page. I was informed that I inherited some $$ millions. Damn I deleted the message. I think it came somewhere from south or middle America. That really surprised me. I'm used to the nigeria emails of widows or friends of recent deceased former government officials, but facebook. If I would have answered all of the scam emails I got over the years, supposedly I would be richer than Bill Gates by now.

There's a FB scam in FL that targets elderly people. Someone called a lady and told her he was her grandson, who was in jail in Canada and needed her to wire $5,000.
She immediately wired the money to the address provided.
      Why?
The scammers read her FB page and got the pet name he used for her. When they called that was the 'name' they used.

I love it! Will definitely use this & pass it around. Thanks! I used to pay my sons per minute for keeping telemarketers on the phone - Then we got into naming an accent to use right before answering - we had a lot of fun - if you have access to teenagers, they love it & will even compete to take the calls! One asked "Is this her husband?" and my one son yelled "She has a HUSBAND? SOB - I KNEW it! That changes everything!" The telemarketer spent a few minutes trying to talk him down. Fun, fun, fun - & cheap too.

    • I had a call from a Siingapore mobile this am. I was told to click one to accept the call- which I did not. I also recd a voicemail, but the volume was too low to hear it.
I will post this number here, so if anyone else gets one- I'm sure there's a rat behind it too. This is how it appeared in my call ID: +658474883313
The number is a valid one-( I looked it up on TP2location) but I didn't want to pay to see who the rat was!

The call I got said to press 1 to accept- Be Very Careful, sometimes if you do, you open a line which allows them to make Intl calls on your number. If you get one of those - end the call immediately!
(when you live in FL you live in 'scam heaven' and have to be on guard 24/7!)

    • You have to be careful about phone scams. The really good ones get information from you without you realizing it.

I was once called by Bank of America, by a "finance auditor" telling me I owed money on my account. I don't have an account with them. I told them this. They said, "we'll we show that your account is delinquent about (misc amount here)." I'm like, "nope, not me." Then they asked if I was the (my name here) at (address here). I said no.
Being angry because of the persistent nature of their insistence that I owed money, when they asked for the address they were calling, I gave it to them, very angerly and slowly. They then verified that they made a mistake, and ended the call.

Being concerned with all of the account numbers, money figures, and their persistence that I owed them money, and asking to speak to another higher-up, or a call back number for their customer service, I paid no attention to what I had actually done.
I had given them my name, phone number, and address using my voice.
-That's enough information for anyone to use to break into any actual bank account that you may have, or a good starting point to crawl for info on the web about a person.
Stolen Identities can be much more valuable than credit cards or a few hundred bucks.

The best thing to do, is to hang-up when you get those calls.
Don't give them any info, and don't let them anger you and goat you into giving away any basic info either. A good thief can steal something right in front of you, without you noticing.

      Good advice.

I get "polling" calls all the time, asking for my positions on political issues, politicians, etc. I refuse the calls and refuse to answer any questions even identifying names, ages, verifying address, etc., simply because you never REALLY know who is actually calling nor what database they're entering all this info into.

Could just as easily be a consulting firm hired by an insurance company, etc. Just something for everyone to give a little thought to; just because a caller claims to be with "Planned Parenthood" or some other organization you trust doesn't mean they actually are (and can you be sure your answers are indeed confidential? No.).
