Too Big to Fail ...and too Big to Jail, Banksters Bailed-out by Drug Money!

The article recounts how the DEA, the criminal division of the Internal Revenue Service and the US attorney’s office in southern Florida were taking a hard look at wire transfers out of Mexico and found that they wound up at the correspondent bank account of the casas at Wachovia were supervised by its Miami branch. From the Guardian:
“On numerous occasions,” say the court papers, “monies were deposited into a CDC by a drug-trafficking organization. Using false identities, the CDC then wired that money through its Wachovia correspondent bank accounts for the purchase of airplanes for drug-trafficking organizations.” The court settlement of 2010 would detail that “nearly $13m went through correspondent bank accounts at Wachovia for the purchase of aircraft to be used in the illegal narcotics trade. From these aircraft, more than 20,000kg of cocaine were seized.”
The story provides a great deal more detail about the money laundering operations and the investigation. It is an excellent job of reporting and I urge you to read it in full. It is very clear the US put a lot of resources into the investigation. So why did Wachovia get off so easy?
At the height of the 2008 banking crisis, Antonio Maria Costa, then head of the United Nations office on drugs and crime, said he had evidence to suggest the proceeds from drugs and crime were “the only liquid investment capital” available to banks on the brink of collapse. “Inter-bank loans were funded by money that originated from the drugs trade,” he said. “There were signs that some banks were rescued that way.”…
[Paul] Mazur [lead infiltrator of the Medellin drug operation] said that “a lot of the law enforcement people were disappointed to see a settlement” between the administration and Wachovia. “But I know there were external circumstances that worked to Wachovia’s benefit, not least that the US banking system was on the edge of collapse.”
I suspect you never imagined “too big to fail” and “too big to jail” were this intimately connected.

They're not too big to jail. You simply have to find a rare combination
uncommon to humans. Someone with a backbone, big cohones, a
death wish, AND a conscience. Some people ARE untouchable to

This sounds like a "Miami Vice" episode but it's for real! These banks can use drug money to bail themselves out (not to mention probably snorting the coke themselves) but an average citizen does this and it's all hell breaks loose. What a bunch of BS! I'm tired of the Elites doing whatever they want! Screw the banks too! Thanks for posting this, figg. This is a story that needs to be heard!

Great on topic video as far as the "facts" in it go...slightly outdated on the numbers but thats to be expected.
My issue with this video was the "Drugs corrupt everything" comments through out.
It's not the drugs that are causing the corruption, it is the GREED for the drug money that causes the corruption.Drugs cause intoxication and potentially addiction, and addiction in some cases can corrupt, but only for purposes of feeding the addiction.
In this case and most others that involve money in large amounts, its the money causes the intoxication and almost always inevitable addiction, addiction to money doesn't always corrupt people but the odds are not in anyones favor. Feeding the greed addiction is a different animal then feeding substance addictions.
Feeding most addictions mean a loss in capitol to gain a consumable commodity, once its used its used.
Feeding the addiction to money means a gain in capitol which increases the concentration of the addictive element, causing even deeper addiction.
Money: Truelly the root of MOST evil.

I see your point, The Wanderer. Money is the root of most evil. Saying that drugs corrupt everything is a blanket statement.

all the drugs in the world couldn't corrupt you like a Bankster.. I wasn't saying drugs are bad Im saying Prohibition for normal citizens and no tolerance in our justice system for some reason when applied to Banksters it doesn't get the same media attention we would be called evil and thrown in prison for life .. But Banksters somehow its portrayed as a necessary evil because of the economy and loss of funds ..My point is doesn't everyone NEED the money when times are hard does that make drug money laundering OKAY!? maybe Im confused!? I have no problem with the drug cartels i have problems with liars and thieves that dip into criminal money when they feel they can get away with it then persecute the little street deallers and addicts for the prison state they help and are helping create for us!

I see what your saying, figg. Drugs aren't what's corrupting, it's greed and hypocrisy that are. I agree that the banksters are 100 times more evil than the street dealers. They use the law to shield themselves from any prosecution while profiting from the illegal drug trafficing. They always find a way to stay above the legal system fray, while others are going to prison for being a part of the same thing they are.

Yea its a little outdated,.. Juarez cartel doesn't exist aat least under that namesake (wink) Not a bad video about the smuggling practices but rather a bit simplistic and one sided the Cartels don't Create the desire or need its society and mostly American Society and its death-grip hold on old tired ideas Prohibition/Black markets and a prison state and Gestapo (DEA ATF Local Narcs)(for reasons well known some we are touching on) we continue with the illegal drug war against mostly our own lost citizenry thrown to the dogs as fodder for the Death machine we have all created and continued against all better clinical scientific and intellectual advice (I dunno) The true Root is not addiction or Drugs at all but DIRTY EASY MONEY not drugs not the illness of addiction or criminal behavior associated here with....But fuckin MOney thats all the realm of BANKSTERS as you see in this one of many real stories going on by the boatload every second of every day.""thanks for the comments

Refuse all drug tests on these reasons.
Hypocrisy: No testing for alchohol despite it being the leading cause of workplace disruption and lack of effeciency for decades.
Privacy: What I do when I am not at work is not my employers business.
Cost: Testing costs coorporation big money without providing any discernable benefits for the companies.
Law: It is not the consumption of controled substances that is illigal(in most cases and states) its the possession of the substances that are illegal, drug testing is like asking you to empty your pockets, your bags, your car, and your cabinets at home for inspection before you can clock in.

Like a mobster movie script. A don explains to the guy being wacked, "Don't take it personal! It's just business."
'Ethics' means don't get caught being unethical. If caught, plead extenuating circumstances and ignorance.

I sure hope people are getting angry about this and the countless thousands of other things the Elite have been getting away with! By the way when is the last time one of the Elite's has had to take a drug test while they were on the job?

Our banking elites don't care where the money came from or how it was earned.
I read an article recently that told of a guy from Citbank that wanted some drug lords to invest their money with Citi. He even traveled down to meet in person.
The guy was turned down, told that the drug lords had their own bankers.
So the guy from Citi finds out who they are laundering money with and he proceeds to BUY the bank! It's always about profits.... even if it's dirty money.
