Florida Gov. Rick Scott Signs Bill; banning students from wearing drooping pants

Image
bundlebear
ORLANDO, Fla. -- Students in Florida won't be spanked, but they will be punished if they don't pull up their pants.

Gov. Rick Scott on Thursday signed the bill, championed by state Sen. Gary Siplin, of Orlando, into law.

The bill bans students in Florida from wearing clothing that exposes their undergarments or indecently exposes body parts while at school.

Students will be warned the first time they're caught, and their parent or guardian will be notified.

On a second offense, the student will be withheld from extracurricular activities for five days.

A third violation would result in a three-day in-school suspension.

Florida is second only to Arkansas to place a ban on baggy pants.

    • Here are a few reasons why I would NEVER vote for a Republican Taliban Turd: Scott Walker, Chris Christie, Ric Snyder, Rick Scott, Jan Brewer, Sean Parnell, Robert Bently, Terry Branstad, Paul LaPage, Butch Otter, Mitch Daniels, Haley Barbour, Brian Sandoval, Jack Dalrymple, John Kasich, Mary Fallin,Rick Perry, Gary Herbert, Nikki Halley, Tom Corbett, Bill Haslam, and Sam Brownback, Republican Taliban Governors all...each one doing his or her part to destroy our civil rights and promoting corporate rights. May I wake tomorrow morning and find that all of them have simply disappeared along with Boehner, McConnell, Kanter, Bachman, Palin, Beck, Hannity, Limbaugh, and Paul (Ayn Rand) Ryan. May all of them rot for eternity. You are goddamned right I hate these fascist pig traitor bastards who are a bigger threat to our country than the terrorists. This post is dediated to Congoboy, Warren Merrill and my other right wing fans.

    • The last thing I want to see is somebody's underwear hanging out. It's gross. These young guys don't have respect for themselves or anyone around them. It's right up there with spitting. Nasty!

If the local public schools want to have dress codes, that is up to them. If employers want to impose a dress code, that is also fine. But as to how you dress in public or at home, I could give a ship. In fact, at 60, I always feared becoming a stick up my bum prig. I am glad that I didn't and can always appreciate the different styles of dress up until I breath my last. I have to say, I still get a kick out of the way young people dress. Keep those styles coming. Yes I know wearing of pulled down pants comes from prison. Maybe if young people knew that they wouldn't do it. But to impose our will like Adolph Scott wants to do? Bull Doody!!!

Then why even wear pants at all? I believe that is part of whats wrong with America. I believe that folks have lost respect with themselves and those around them. Oh yeah I'm not supporting the law I'm just stateing how I feel about it. I don't like the fact that some choose to wear their pants around their ankles But I will fight for thier right to do so. I just see it as disrespectful thats all.

    • Well, it is good to know that Rick Scott is focusing on the important issues like our kids wearing droopy pants, and ignoring divider issues like the economy and jobs.

The droopy pants is a style. When I was a kid, we had styles as well, and we also had local school dress codes, not one imposed by the state as Scott is doing. You are right, there are soooooo many other important issues to look at. They don't because they don't know how to solve them, just make things worse.

    • Do you see what these Republican slime are doing? They are creating diversions from the big issues such as what happens after the US House of Representatives doesn't vote to raise the debt limit by 1 August. Or how about their assaults on human rights in all the states they control? Do not let these right wing turds blind side you. The local schools should be involved in dress codes, not Adolph Scott.

    • I don't know how many people on here watched Vanguard's "The Oxycontin Express," but not long after it aired, the DEA busted a bunch of people in the poverty stricken areas of Kentucky, the destination of the drugs, but it's been business as usual for the suppliers in Florida. What the hell is this brain dead governor doing about that? Too busy making laws about saggy pants. Just mind boggling.

    • The biggest issue here is not the pants!!! That is just part of the issue. The most important thing you all should remember is the Republicans have a different vision of America than most decent people have. This new GOP is not about a free country as we all know it. Legislating pants is another diversion away from the actual issue that he has no right to tell anyone how they should dress. I believe in dress codes for certain work and for school, but how one dresses on the street is their business, not Adolph Scott's. Now I am going to use the same kind of rhetoric these Republican Taliban use against President Obama. I believe that the GOP in its present form is trying to undermine our democratic republic. I believe the GOP is aiding the Koch brothers among other rich corporations who do not have the best interests of our country at heart. I believe the Republican party is trying to over throw our govenment. I accuse the GOP of treason!! They should be rounded up, tried in a court of law, and then executed by firing squad. Hows THAT for wacky rhetoric? But this is just how the GOP and the Tea Baggers sound when they talk about Obama, Liberals, and about anything humane in general. KIDS OF FLORIDA: GET INTO BUSES AND DECEND UPON THE FLORIDA CAPITOL BY THE THOUSANDS, AND ALL OF YOU SHOULD WEAR PULLED DOWN PANTS WITH THIS ON THE BACK: RICH SCOTT: IT IS NOW EASIER FOR YOU TO KISS THIS!

It's been their "fashion" for over 20 years now. Is that the best they can do? General Larry Platt had it right when he sang "Pants on the ground, Lookin' like a fool wit your pants on the ground." Kids who wear this "fashion" look like fools.

doesnt like the entire country have a nearly 10% unemployment rate? dude, if you open your mind beyond its biased limited scope you'll see that plenty of democratic leadership in this country are pretty useless as well. now i wouldnt advocate it but i wonder what the results would be if you took 100 random saggers and 100 random folks with normal looking pants and drug tested them all what the percentages would turn out like?

I don't really understand your point... Republicans came into sweeping power this last election cycle with a combination of a referendum on Obama and the state of the economy. They ran on bring back prosperity and that includes Gov. Scott. What's he doing with his first term? Drug testing, cutting public education and giving huge tax breaks to the rich. None of this is helping his state.

not being a resident of florida i am not privy to their economic problems. who's he drug testing, public employees? sounds reasonable if so. but florida is hardly the only state cutting public ed funding. up in the northwest in washington state their govenor a staunch dem is doing the same thing. the economy nationwide is in a shambles and each state has to decide what theyre gonna have to cut. no one likes it but everyone has to share the pain unfortunately. you cant point fingers just because someone is a dem or repub. its not fair, truthful or realistic

Right on to you Tomoni!!! What goddamn right does a state official have telling you that you need a drug test in order to get this or that kind of service even though you never were arrested for drugs? I tell you this: the ACLU is going to have its hands full prosecuting these Republican Taliban slime. Rich Scott and the rest of his party have some nefarious agendas: Create a two class society of rich and serfs. Create a theocratic corporate oligarchy. In other words a dictatorship. And don't let these scum drug test you!!! We need millions of freedom loving Americans like you saying no to these assaults on our rights. I bet you that most of this drug testing crap is directed at black Americans somehow. Well, it is time for all Americans, black and white and brown and red and yellow, to stand shoulder to shoulder and remind the Koch brothers and the GOP that this country is not a plantation, and they are not a masters of us. The USA has had many weaknesses and still has a lot of improving to do, but if we place our country into the hands of these Republicans, all that progress will be squandered and lost. I believe that there is racism at the heart of Scott's legislation. I firmly hope that the Black community of Florida stands up loud and gets right into their rich white faces (I am white by the way) and tells them: "I'll give you my sh-- before I give you my drug tested blood or urine." And if it is the style now for kids to wear their clothes a certain way, it is none of Scott's business to interfer. He is supposed to be about small government right? Well what the hell is the Florida State Government doing in the personal dress habits of some kids in Florida? Personally, I don't like that style (it doesn't look very comfortable, like wearing a uniform), but if I was living in Florida right now, I'd get thousands of people on busses to storm Florida's capital, all of us wearing pants pulled down as far as possible without revealing our asses which Rich Scott and the entire Republican Taliban party can kiss. We need to bring back the big mouth of the sixties which tragically turned into the greedy mouth of the yuppies. It is now up to you and all the others around you for the sake of your children. Haven't you taken enough crap from the Scotts of the world?

youre pretty sensitive on that drug issue, what you got in your trunk girl? random drug testing of both public and private sector employees is pretty much the norm nation wide anymore especially if one is in a position where "bein high" can endanger the public or fellow employees.i am randomly drug tested because part of my job responsibilities involve transporting the public. wouldnt want a stoner doin that. since i am drug free i have nothing to worry about. it is perfectly understandable and justified to randomly test folks if their job entails working around machinery or driving a vehicle. pretty soon though stoners are gonna have to give up the ganja or work low level low paying jobs. you toke, you broke! my priorities are making an honest living, raising a family and trying to instill quality attributes in my children, doing my little part to be a good steward of the earth and helping out those in need when i can. whats yours?

first of all it's none of your business what's in my trunk? whatever the hell thats suppose to mean. You don't seem to understand that this is the start of widdling away at americans personal freedoms. people see things like this and say just like you " oh well it doesn't effect me so whatever." and go about their day. until the day it does come to your door because we've all been sleeping at the wheel. when you have a huge budget deficit maybe you don't waste millions of dollars of tax payer money drug test public sector employees. last time i checked their isn't some huge scandal about public sector workers using drugs in florida or anywhere else in the country. i guess your kids go to private school so you don't care about public schools. that's great for them what about all the other children in america? what are my priorities? how about leaving some lasting legacies for the generations after us. like infrastructure, investing in high speed rail repairing are severely damaged roads, bridges and electrical grid.making sure everyone has access to healthcare it is a fundmental human right! making sure every child in this country has a quality free education so that we can compete with the rest of the world and standing up for the american worker. Rick Scott and the rest of the Republicans are making changes that are set up to make a social underclass of people basically modern day slavery and that scares me. especially when i talk to people like you who have no interest in the greater good of our society.

thank you!...i think lol. look random drug testing is one thing rick scott isn't proposing random drug testing he wants to drug test each and every single state employee! it's estimated to cost the state anywhere from two to five million dollars. plus he wants to test everyone who's applying for unemployment benefits. how does that keep our industry and roads safe? i can't tell you how many times i've been mowed down by unemployed motorist going to cash their checks! you have to realize infrastructure is investments for the long term not everything you do for the greater good of this country is going to turn a profit. the hoover dam and the erie canal weren't built to make the united states money. they were built because they were needed and yes the government paid for it and they employed thousands of americans and still do today. they're tons of ways we could pay for these things for one how about we get rid of the bush now obama's tax cuts end our two wars...more like three or four and rewrite the tax code to get rid of the loopholes just to name a few off the top of my head.

This is off topic for this page which concerns baggy pants. However, here is my solution for the so-called deficit: 1 Bring our troops home all around the world. 2. Let the Bush tax cuts to the rich expire 3. Raise taxes on the rich. 4. Get the insurance companies out of our health care. You see, this is easy enough for even you.

Who is trying to interfer with Abortion rights in Kansas and in Indiana? Who is trying to demonize public employees? Who is trying to blur the separation between church and state? Who wants to undermine climate change studies? Who wants to continue giving tax breakes to people who don't need it? I think we need more progressive liberals to be loud and in the faces of these Republican slime balls.Their entire agenda is frankly anti-American. The GOP of today is not the GOP or even Barry Goldwater's time. Today's GOP has been hijacked by rightest loonies whose vision of America is 19th century when trusts ran wild and workers had no rights at all. The Republican Taliban governor of Maine for example wants to recind child labor laws. Let's put the little buggers down in the coal mines 12 hours a day..that way we can close and privatize more public schools. I love how people on the right use what Freud called reaction formation. This is when you accuse someone else of having the very beliefs you yourself have. I will admit that I do in fact have nothing but contempt for right wingers. Their vision of a business dominated America with one political party is not my America. My America is supposed to be on the side of the weak and the defenseless, not on the side of oil companies and the Koch Brothers. I realize that anything I could say on this matter will go right over your head. Hey, let me put it to you this way: I am retired and on a fixed income. I still pay federal income tax. I am very happy about this. In fact, and I really mean this, if they raise everyone's taxes by a dollar in order to help you or your kids through school, or to help your parents get food and heat in the winter, I would gladly pay a 10 dollar increase. To me, paying taxes is a patriotic duty. If my taxes help keep homeless people in good housing or your children in school, that is a great thing. I've learned that if you cut taxes, you cut the government and its ability to help people. I don't consider myself a selfish capitalist, but a social Democrat. If your life, Congoboy, or the lives of your family is better because of my tax contribution, I am gratified. This means you are waking up each morning with a smile on your face, secure in the knowlege that you have the government with you in all your troubles. And that is fine by me!!!

PS How did you know I am a stoner too?? Are you a boozer?? Imagine how much money the government could raise if we legalized marijuana, sex work, and gambling. We're never going to do anything intelligent like that because our country was founded by the puriitans, not the libertines. Also re: reaction formation: you call me a bigot, and you are the one who is bigotted. I just don't want truly bigotted people running and ruining our country like Bush did and worse.

Hey, does a moron like you learn your stupidity from your parents or from other experts in the field? As long as there is trash like you out there, I will be here to fight you every step of the way. And if you don't like it, you can always insert that excuse for a head into your own commode.

Really, how did Obama do that? Killing Bin Ladin? Saving General Motors? Bringing in flawed but better health care for all? Bush lied about Iraq and gave so much money to his rich base that he almost singlehandely destroyed this country. Still awake, asshole?

well i wouldnt call alcohol the worst drug in the world as many people drink responsibly. but it is the easiest one to acquire, meaning also the easiest one to abuse. The worst? hmmmm...i think maybe crack cocaine or crystal meth would top alcohol in that department
