ONE DOWN---FIVE TO GO

Current TV Programmer Contest - Something Fishy's Going On

1) The winners names were posted, however the winning pitches of the contest were never posted.

2) Some entrants have been going through all the pitches and not finding any names that match the winners.

3) Numerous requests to Current TV have gone unanswered regarding these issues.

4) The final night of the contest (according to the official rules) was supposed to end at 12 Midnight- it did not end at midnight but instead ended at 10PM, 2 hours earlier, and pitches were posted through an alternate means after the 12 midnight hour doing it in a process not in accordance with the Official Rules- I have Print Screens of all the Activity that took place on the last 2 hours of the contest to prove this contest ran afoul of its own rules.

5) I emailed Current tonight again asking for an explanation and let them know I was going to alert the media, which caused them to take down the following page- http://current.com/studios/marketing/be-a-tv-programmer/

Using a mirror search I was able to find the page in Google Cache-

    • This is not being as Omle is saying, this is a contest that was to judged by Current TV, Hell my shit was not all that, but fair is fair. Not having an outside company pull entries at random. If you had an entry and you were part of the community you mighty get it. Alot of people put alot of time into their entry, so it should be fair. If American Idol, just tossed the votes and said we like this guy no matter who was voted for, kind of like George W's first term. You don't like the conversation don't read it, change the channel. We really want to know what happened and why eprize was the judge. People need to stand up for what they think is right even if it is wrong. If you don't agree, that is your right, but we are fighting for what we think is right. Until Current admits it did not play by the rules we will fight on, you might think it stupid, and that is fine and I respect your thoughts. So with that said, let us fight on with the facts.

Ok, I see your point but there's a right way and a wrong way. It just looks like Punman is going crazy on this. Come on, going to media outlets? Say you're a journalist from the NY Times and you get an e-mail with the things written above. Which of the following things would you think?

      1. Ah, I agree with this person! Of course it's fraud and people's integrity are in trouble! Stop the presses!

      or

      2. Wow. A guy didn't win a contest and is upset about it. Delete.

Once again, I apologize if I sound rude or mean but this is just too much.

    • Punman, I'm begging you to explain the fraud to me. If you're upset for not winning, then tell me that's why you're obsessing over this. If it's cause your entry was #1 and you didn't win then this whole thing is even sillier than I thought. The top 20 that were left shouldn't have won anyways. What if the most amazing pitch was entered in on the last day but the only people who saw it were the contest judges. It wasn't a popularity contest.

I seriously want to understand this. I always thought you were a very creative person ever since I joined this site (I've been a lurker for sometime) but if this is just because you're jealous I will lose respect for you. If it really is fraud then take the time to explain HOW it is fraud. Please.

First, explain to me how it's legitimate based on what I have posted....
I really didn't care if I obtained a prize or not.
This whole posting stuff to me is a Giant Waste of Time and I wish I could just go away and Let it Be (Mother Mary), however in good conscience I just would like to physically see who the winners are and what their submissions were (along with several other Community members.) Have you ever been committed to something and really cared and wanted to stay involved and see the whole thing through?..well that's where I am genuinely coming from.

I was the biggest fan of Current over the course of many years.

I watched the Channel several nights a week.
I posted stuff to the site.
      I participated in Bar Karma.
      I entered this silly contest.
I was the founding member of Countdown:Tonight's Discussion Group with Keith Olbermann and even made it to the front page of Current's main site with the Group.

However, several factors caused me to become genuinely disillusioned with Current when Olbermann started, the supposed winners were announced and the Community became unhinged.

      Things such as:

      1) As the owner of Countdown:Tonight's Discussion Group with Keith Olbermann my computer was consistently being attacked by cycbot backdoor viruses whenever I was logged into the Current site- I never had a virus on my laptop EVER, and within the 2 weeks that I had been moderating the group, nightly I was logged into computer support somewhere in the far east having some tech sign in and try to remove the viruses on a nightly basis. The cycbot virus would disappear and then immediately come back whenever I entered Current's site.

      2) As the owner of Countdown:Tonight's Discussion Group, I suggested to Current on several occasions several ways to get the Community back into the folds of Current. For one, I suggested an alternate feed into the Countdown:Tonight's Discussion Group cinema verite style handheld camera - black and white shot of the show that would cause a buzz to Community members - since nothing was ever done like this before. They said they were looking into it, but it was falling on deaf ears...something could have been done quickly, nothing happened.

      3) The aftermath of the contest and all of the stuff I have been pointing out.

      4) The lack of concern given to the Community with the arrival of Olbermann by literally being pushed to the back of the site with GOOGLE Pay Per Click Ads to greet loyal community members- to me the Community became a revenue stream for Current where they were herded into the background and given the surroundings of a Garage Sale/Flea market atmosphere that did not echo the rest of the Current website.

I could go on and on but that's it in a cupcake.......

Yeah... still not buying it. If I won, I wouldn't come it saying it was me considering how crazy you've been acting. I would have deleted my account and made a new username. I feel that it's just you not getting your way and it's pissing you off. I'm truly sorry if I'm being harsh but you have to realize this is insane. It really seems like your overreacting.

    • Am I the only one not doesn't feel the need for the witch hunt? Oh well, you lost, you move on. Let the winners enjoy their prizes. I'm sad I didn't win too but this is just silly! Am I missing something? Please explain to my why you feel the need to moan and complain? If I really am missing the point, then please explain how this is fraud. What are they gaining out of this? If the contest wasn't handled right, then once again, oh well! Maybe it's really not some big conspiracy but a trail and error with a new type of contest. I just can't believe how this community is so quick to insult Current yet still come on here each day. I'm seriously baffled.

    • artemesHi looks to be alright- didn't realize she submitted 3 times (would have been much easier to find if Current had not removed all traces of this "con"-test from their site)

Here is another pitch from artemesHi -

      http://webcache.googleusercontent.com/search?q=cache:http%3A%2F%2Fcurrent.com%2Fstudios%2Fmarketing%2Fbe-a-tv-programmer%2F93020512_be-a-tv-programmer-a-pitch-from-artemishi.htm

Cannot find a third pitch (if artemesHi is the winner that Rael referred to as the person he spoke to)

Again, one winner looks OK - need to find the other five winners and their winning pitches one way or another

Rael, how did you determine it to be random?

Based on artemishi's pitch it does appear to be random -

      http://webcache.googleusercontent.com/search?q=cache:http%3A%2F%2Fcurrent.com%2Fstudios%2Fmarketing%2Fbe-a-tv-programmer%2F93042525_be-a-tv-programmer-a-pitch-from-artemishi.htm

SchuylerDenham sent this to me on Thu, 28 Jul 2011 04:30:50 +0000

      "Punman,
Artemishi says she was one of the winners - here is what she submitted (did she forget to say what she would be doing on her first day?)"

SchuylerDenham makes an excellent point -

This is in the OFFICIAL RULES: http://current.com/sl/contest_terms.htm

"Then, follow the directions to use the storymaker software on the Bar Karma website and upload between five (5) and fifteen (15) scenes showing what you think your first day working at Current TV’s programming department would be like, being sure to show you passion, enthusiasm and outside the box thinking, hereafter referred to as your submission ("Submission"). You have got to be fucking kidding me. It was at random when the contest rules clearly stated the entries will be judged on Creativity and Originality. Holy shit that is way fucked up. Reason I am throwining in all of the swear words so that at least someone over there sees and removes this.

CurrentTV you are a bag of shit! Telling half truths when they suit you. I guess that is why you are so high on Olbermann right now. News being represented as a one sided opinion. Once he is used up where are you going next? You are going to have no viewership left that wants to see the same crap you are putting on now in repeats. Guess what, most everyone who has your station has a DVR and can record things they want to see the first time around.

What are you looking for? Get enough ratings so that you can unload stock at a higher value? You definitely don't have a clear public mission statement. Take down your comments sections on this site because you don't seem to pay attention and the ones you don't you hide off on some obscure link.

Would love to hear a response to any of this and how you have been operating. Shady is the only word that describes it. You are a leech on the ass of television because you want everything for free.

Hey Olbermann, look under your chair as there is a timeboamb ticking under your career with CurrentTV.

Hope this randomly selected winner is taking your job offer if that was even ever out there for real. Anyone could put together a more cohesive go to market strategy than the fucknuts you have now.

Yep, that episode 3 was a real knee slapper, jaw dropper realization.

And the good news is: I found other avenues with the social experience. Today I found http://www.theinsideexperience.com/

I didn't participate in the contest but I can see there are legitimate concerns.
The contest administrator should issue a statement detailing the validity of the contest and just be done with it.

iWhen I was at the studio I had a long talk with Jim Goldblum. He showed me the wall where the storyboards that were used from the community were hung. It really looked like they were trying to incorperate our ideas into the show. I asked to see the writers. They were the only ones who had an office with walls and a door. I was shocked to find out that there was only 1 paid writer and an intern. I was told the episodes were written by freelance writers to keep cost down. No wonder the shows were so uneven.

I know the budget was on a shoestring but jeez. We were lead to believe we were pioneers in the frontier of a new direction for TV. I still think the idea is great. I wondered why they wouldn't they have taken advantage of the wealth of talented writers from the community. Was it really about money? Did they ever have any intention of using the community for anything other than free advertising. The people that I met that worked on the show were really nice. They went out of their way to make me feel welcome.

I guess the most telling example of how they were hamstring by current TV management came from a talk I had with Cassie. Oh course I made a complete fool of myself when she came into the bathroom. I shouted Dana, than I calmed down and we talked about her warobe and I said what is with the hooker clothes? She said it wasn't the show that wanted her dressed that way iit was the boys upstairs in current management.

    • A note on a comment. Nothing in there saying the recommending had any correlation with how the contest was scored and judged. However, too many fishy details here so great detective work shedding a definite "reasonable doubt" on the whole thing.

I was a bit suspect on the whole deal right from the beginning when a contest where entries were "judged" based on creativity allowed everyone with a login to view the entries already submitted. Definite opportunities for hybridizing and stealing of concepts made in earlier entries.

Answers really need to be given CurrentTV if you have any credibility at all. This whole contest was a train wreck from the beginning. I've seen more organization at a state fair pie contest.

Contest organizers and "independant judging firm": Any answers you could provide would be well received before you get run through the mud in the whole experience. You actually judge based on creative merit? Or just pull names from a hat?

      1 Down- 5 to Go

      ArtemisHi
Hey guys, sorry to be late to the party (and thanks to RaEl for notifying me). I was one of the iPad winners, and I can tell you that it wasn't a scam. I had to fill out and mail in a lot of verification and tax paperwork, and have been notified that I will be paying taxes on the prize as if it were earnings, but I did receive to iPad.....so, not a scam!

I'd love to hear from the grand prize winner, though, about their experience as a TV Programmer. What do you think, Bar Karma staff?

To the winners where ever they may be, congrats to the ones who are not Harvey. So I say to all write the winners and tell them great job!!!! Quick thought, did you know you get 5 points for filling out your info, kinda hard to get 0 points.

This does not appear to be evident in any of the winners if you look at all of their activity-

I rather tag this as investigative journalism - I will be happy when all is revealed.

Isn't that what journalism and news is supposed to be all about- Getting to the truth? Not just revealing a story and having talking heads pontificating till they're blue in the face and arguing with one another.

      Whatever happened to the 5 W's and 1 H
      Who?
      What?
      Where?
      When?
      Why?
      How?
