    • Uhh, duh Bill....we already paid into Social Security and Medicare/Medicaid. It's not like the American people voted for these programs, or were given the choice to opt out of these deductions from their paychecks and create their own retirement or health care funds. Of course, the assholes in DC who want to cover up their thievery would like to refer to these programs as "Socialism," when in fact, they were more like taxation without representation.

We were forced to participate, and now that it's time for the government to return our investment, we are told, "oops, we spent the money you put into Social Security and Medicare/Medicaid, so we are going to abolish/privatize the programs because we need more money for bombs, and besides, they were Socialism, and we all know we HATE Socialism.

We are a nation of dimwits, and Bill's commentary subtly sidesteps just a few of the real facts.

You're nitpicking too much and you've missed the larger point.

The point is that for all their hubbub about big government, Americans love it more than anyone.

And it's not as if social programs are free, they're all paid into. From healthcare to transportation.

I didn't miss the larger point Saladin, I just chose to ignore it. I know, we are schizophrenic when it comes to socialism, but I resent the implication that comes from even labeling some of these programs as socialism. Socialism inherently implies consent, and it's not like anyone was ever given the opportunity to consent....or opt out, and that is the same thing happening now with the "agreed" upon changes. What most Americans understood to be a contract between themselves and the government, is not being treated like a contract. When you want to change the terms of a contract, both parties have to agree to those changes, and that is simply not what is happening.

I see what you're saying, and I agree.

Social Security is an obligation, not a social agreement. The government *cannot* choose to stop such programs because it has no right touch money which isn't theirs.

Although I would argue that socialism often argues that its programs are rights, and not agreements, I'll simply agree with your point as is for the sake of clarity.

You know that you would have to work for 273 years to pay for social security and medicare for 9 years? You just can't pay enough for what you get back. Not that I'm complaining but the SS is paid from working people not saved money.

    • Bill is like a cool breeze on a hot humid day with his ability to reveal the truth about such a wide range of topics. I would love to see him debate any number of the right wing loudmouths..Hannity, Limbaugh, Bachmann , Palin, et al.

    • I used to have arguments with co-workers a few jobs back. They were all caught up in the conservatism of the nineties. One guy was an ex-union trade worker who was “scabbing” at the company we worked for, which was a small high-tech shop that was non-union. He used to rail against big government. But, during his lifetime he went out on unemployment every winter during the slack season, and he got his house with the G.I. Bill. Another guy who was part salesman, part technician, had the same attitude. He grew up in New York City in a city housing development and he too bought his house with help from the G.I. Bill. Another guy was in the Navy for decades, and he used to rail against minorities who collected welfare. I used to point out that every one of them had helped themselves at the government’s expense and that unemployment insurance was a government check just like Welfare. Needless to say I wasn’t the most popular guy, (and I’m still not. My Current posts consistently get zero comments.)

      SIBob,
This is a good comment and it's true. These people were the ones who thought they never used government programs. Idiots! Also, if people don't comment on your posts, to hell with them. They are the ones missing out.

Thanks for your support and I wish you luck next week with your recall elections. We will all be paying attention and if you win we will all celebrate with you. (Although I quit drinking years ago, I'll have a decaf tea in your honor). As for lack of support on this site, I guess I'll never be big in the digital social networking scene. Personally I would find it exhausting to keep up the pace of texting, "facebooking", and whatever else that the young people seem to be caught up in. I guess what I'm doing now is part of that, but at least it is about something besides gossip.

You're welcome, SIBob. Don't worry--I don't text, facebook or twitter, either. I don't even know how to use a digital camera. I just have my old computer. I like what you do because it's NOT gossip. You pay attention to local issues and nationwide issues. I like that better anyway. :)

Thank you, I like your contributions also. And, I got my first digital camera last December, just in time for the pro-Wisconsin protests early this year. Digital photography is fun and easy. (Last year's vacation photos with a standard camera were all wasted, as the camera I was using malfunctioned. It was then that I decided to go digital, where I can see the results as I take the pictures.)

You're welcome, SIBob. You moved on to digital camrea, that means I should. I just don't know how to load one and how to get the pics onto my computer. I'll have to have someone teach me how. :)

It's as easy as a USB cord, which goes from your camera to the computer. You load the camera with a memory card, which does not have to be removed to move or copy photos to your computer. That's it, point and shoot. No more film to be developed. Do yourself a favor and get a camera that takes batteries so there is no need to re-charge anything. This way if you take a lot of pictures at one time, you can keep going after replacing the two batteries, and the camera doesn't "die" on you when you most need it. One 8GB memory card will hold thousands of photos. When you load the photos onto your computer you can clear off the card so that the camera is ready to go next time. It's much easier than the old way with film cartridges or disposable cameras, the only cost is the AA alkaline batteries, after the camera and memory card purchase. I get about 100 pictures for every 2 batteries, roughly 1 cent a picture.
