The Bible, a book I love to hate, insists that God created the Heavens & the Earth in six days and rested upon the seventh. The ancient law book also demands the faithful to follow step and rest on the seventh day of the week (apparently God created our system of time as well), leaving the day free to worship the God formerly known as Jehovah. So why do modern day Christians go to church on Sunday, the first day of the week?
According to the Biblical creationism myth, the seventh day was set aside for mankind to rest and appreciate God's creation. The idea was to spend the last day of the week being connected to nature, to appreciate the birds, the trees, the land and the water and all the creatures we share this planet with. Some of these ideas originated from the old pagan religions which appreciated nature or "God's creation". Somewhere along the corrupted line of human history the idea of appreciating nature in such a way was no longer considered to be "of God." Pagans were labeled as devil worshipers and all of their sacred days were hijacked and converted into Christian holidays by the state.
The problem with these rouge pagans is that they were too difficult to control. Back in the day religion was the law. (Still in some places.) The holiness code of the old testament, also known as the Torah (or the first 5 books) was written to give order to the Jewish community at the time. It set a code of cleanliness to separate the Hebrews who feel they are God's chosen people from the non chosen people. This was their way of setting "civilized" boundaries or laws.
Humans are the most advanced intelligent creature on this earth. We are aware of our impending doom, which causes us to become aware of time. Knowing that our time is limited in these bodies we have based everything we do on a time scale. Our way of life is dependent on time, which is an illusion we created to make sense of this life. Imagine if the concept of time went out of your consciousness. Would you feel compelled to hurry around to make money or to stress about getting on the highway before rush hour? Would there even be a rush hour? Would there be a need for pointless work to make imaginary currency?
No matter how hard the devout will argue this point (who's opinions are based solely on a hunch), the Bible was written by men to control men. It begins by asserting the concept of time and the concept of a work week. The entire creationism myth is a metaphor for a work week.
