For decades, the U.S. Census Bureau has reported that over 30 million Americans were living in “poverty,” but the bureau’s definition of poverty differs widely from that held by most Americans. In fact, other government surveys show that most of the persons whom the government defines as “in poverty” are not poor in any ordinary sense of the term. The overwhelming majority of the poor have air conditioning, cable TV, and a host of other modern amenities. They are well housed, have an adequate and reasonably steady supply of food, and have met their other basic needs, including medical care. Some poor Americans do experience significant hardships, including temporary food shortages or inadequate housing, but these individuals are a minority within the overall poverty population. Poverty remains an issue of serious social concern, but accurate information about that problem is essential in crafting wise public policy. Exaggeration and misinformation about poverty obscure the nature, extent, and causes of real material deprivation, thereby hampering the development of well-targeted, effective programs to reduce the problem.

Precisely! Silly poor people worrying about keeping food from going bad. Living hand to mouth like they do, the food they can afford won't stay around long enough anyway. Oh, dear, I feel a Jonathan Swift train of thought roaring down my track about food and the poor. I will stop now. This ride is about to get very dark.

Does anyone know why the poor is so poor? They don't pray right. Yes, that's right! If they learned how to pray...in English, because that's the ONLY language the Lord will listen to and pray, not just for a bowl of rice...but treasures beyond their wildest dreams...those are the prayers that will be answered!

Thank God(dess) for Jon! Showing the stupidity and heartlessness of the GOP's favorite Foul Noise. I posted this on another site, but if you don't mind, I'll post again, since I think it pertains:
To those who still insist that the poor should "pay their fair share of taxes," I have these questions:
How is what you're saying different from the Irish Famine, when the British landlords, even though they knew their Irish tenant farmers had nothing and were starving to death because the only thing they were allowed to keep were the fungus-ravaged potatoes, still insisted that ALL tribute be paid on time? They even sent out their "Black and Tans" to spy on the those the landlord suspected of holding back.
What do you say to a impoverished mother who has to make the choice between paying her "fair share" of taxes or feeding her children for a week?
What would you tell me when I get more taxes taken out of my paycheck and cannot buy those new brakes for the 1994 Ford Escort that I need to use to get to my part time job (can't get a full time one)? Nor afford the bus fare?
But I will answer your problem: while many rich people became rich because they built their businesses from the bottom up, others became rich because they CHEATED people out of their money and continue to do so. (What the hell were toxic credit-default derivatives? A get-some-rich-people-richer scheme.)
And I will say, without shame because I know it's true, some of those rich people sucked the hard work, innovation and ideas, vacation time, health benefits, and family lives of millions of workers and gave them very little back but a kick in the pants. Been there. - 9 months ago

Animals? Really? What is she then, a upper stratus fairy? A goddess, maybe? I know "poor" people who fall for this crap. Most because they attend a church that tells them what to believe. Also, it maybe makes them feel superior to the people of other nationalities who they come in contact with. They call the other races leeches, then allow themselves to be totally raped by the ones who they vote in.... Love your comment, Leen, as always. The Fox"News"/conservative spin on this is absolutely disgusting! The people who do the spinning have absolutely no human decency. I hate them! They are filthy, vile, evil pieces of rotting festering shit.
The rich are the parasites. The corporate CEOs are the takers of profits while their underpaid slaves are the makers of profits. The spin is exactly backwards from reality. It is a tragedy that the American people are stupid enough to give these horrible people a platform to vomit their lies.
The people of our country really should be far more angry at the conservative propagandists.
John Stewart was great in this segment. His show consists of geniuses who seem to always know the right words to use to highlight the bullshit propaganda.

I saw this the night it aired. Thanks for posting this, llip. Leave it to Jon Stewart to put it all on the line. He does the work that the MSM doesn't do. When I first saw this, all I felt was sad and angry. How FOX and the far right demonize the working class and the poor makes me sick and I'm tired of it! Oh, because someone has a fridge or a cell phone that means they are living the good life?! Newsflash.....the working poor have a cell phone because it's CHEAPER than a landline. That's what both of my nephews do to save money. FOX is just plain evil and what hurts even more is that there are working class people who buy into this...the rich I expect it from. FOX is not news. It's hateful, evil propaganda. I wish Murdoch and Co. would all go to prison!

Good comment Leen61.
May I remind you that journalist have a responsibility to ensure the objectivity and accuracy of the news items they report. It's as if Jon Stewart is the real journalist and faux news and the GOP is the joke of the day. More and more people go to Jon Stewart for real news, then alleged real news. And it seems that the GOP is trying to bring back the 1900's, when the rich took what they wanted without any interference from anybody. Can we afford to keep these faux news operations alive, or will they rule this country by controlling all the low information voters. Is there any way to hold them accountable? Hell yeah!!! - 9 months ago

wow leens youre just as subject to providing misinformation as you claim fox to be. must be that liberal hypocrisy thingy...When it comes to saving money and phones, the question of whether a cell phone or a land line (or if you need to keep both) is a better value for your budget often comes up. Here are a few issues to consider when deciding which makes better sense for you:
How Big Is Your Family? - The bigger your family, the better the chance that a land line be a cheaper alternative than cell phones. With a land line, your can get a phone placed in the room of each person in the family on the single line coming into the house. With a cell phone, however, you would need to provide each member of the family with their own separate phone. While "family plans" exist that lower the cost of multiple phones within the family, these plans are still much more expensive than a single land line.
How Much Do You Talk? - The amount you talk on the phone will determine which option is a better value. If you talk a moderate amount, then land lines and cell phones stack up pretty well against each other in relation to cost. The more you talk on the phone, however, the land line quickly becomes a better value than the cell phone. This is becasue landlines tend to be a single, flat rate no matter how long you talk and this is why land line phone are better for your budget it you talk a lot. In addition, cell phone service in the US usually charges whether you make or receive the call which means that you often use more minutes than you realize. Some people argue that cell phones are a better deal becasue of "free long distance." While this may be true if you make your long distance calls on weekends and nights when they are unlimited but be careful to assume that long distance calls made at other times are "free." these peak hour calls usually still count toward your overall minutes which will usually favor the land line phone.
What Is Your Current Lifestyle? - How you go about your life will be a big factor in determining which phone makes sense for you. if you are away from home, travel and use your cell phone as your main contact phone, then it's worthwhile considering whether or not you need a land line at all. If this is the way you use your phone and find that you rarely, if ever, use your land line, then your land line phone may be costing you money that you don't need to be spending. http://www.savingadvice.com/forums/phones-utilities/14942-cell-phone-vs-land-lin...

I think it's a good idea, but I think it's a goal of some, to get people to turn off politics, left and right, leaving them to do waht they want, when they want, with no accountability.
The only way 'we the people' can try and hold them accountable is to pay attention. Facts matter, the truth matters more. We can't let the goal of truth disappear. If we don't hold politicians and media accountable, they are free to mislead at will and the will!
Good luck congoboy. Everyone should seek less stress. I am 56 and would much rather be able to ignore politics, because politicians are doing what they are elected to do -- serve the people. Unfortunately, they are serving corporations at our expense. We can't afford to ignore them, the end cost will be too high!

as much as you leftys enjoy twisting and spinning reality a man could lose his mind if he didnt have a good sense of humor to find his way through liberal rhetoric. it wasnt clinton but a republican led house and senate that pushed through all the things you give bill credit for. the only thing he brought to the whitehouse and the country was an excuse for good sex and cheating on ones wife. i know in europe a mans indiscretions are highly regarded but here in the usa most of us prefer a man of honor in the whitehouse. something we havent seen much of since reagan. peace my poorly informed, misdirected friend. next time save your own rants for your own leaders and stay out of politics you dont comprehend or understand.

Alright, I was keeping out of this, but what about the people who work very hard for minimum wage? They must work very hard and achieve little because the game is rigged against them. Most of the very rich did not work hard to get what they have. Donald Trump took government bail outs because he is a shitty businessman. I don't think I need to reiterate what the banks and Wall Street did and got bailed out for.
With very few exceptions, the very rich did not work hard to get what they have and do not contribute fairly to the system that made it possible. In fact, most got rich on either borderline or over the line criminal activity.
Pointing this out does not make one lefty liberal. It merely illustrates an awareness of what is really going on in the world.

When you say "cable" are you referring to local cable companies, or do you mean any company like Direct & Dish? I ask because I noticed that my mother's local cable company has LOTS of religious programming and they seem to control the content pretty much on their basic lineup. They do offer the comedy channel though, so they have not censored Stewart/Colbert. Fox is available, I think, from Direct TV. I just never go there.

Basically, any company that has packages of channels instead of getting channels "a la carte". There's legislation that addresses this. Cause the companies pay the channels and if there's a channel that's not offered by them, they don't pay them. I would rather pay for channels directly cause there are a lot of channels I don't watch and I don't care to have.
Specific to your mom, there's a lot of religious programming, even channels that you can get with digital antenna and not pay cable or satellite. I would definately experiment with that cause reception differs from area to area. Trees, electricial wires on those poles you see. Got MTV2 with an antenna in a high rise apartment.

Oh, Fox News can gather info but when it doesn't fit the story, they'll manufacture stuff. I'm saying it's well tuned machine. That's the credit I will give cause really it takes a lot of effort to lie and continue to do so. It's all about the story with cable news.
MSNBC's fault is that they pick and choose based on things that they can say are factual, something that sturs up conflict, and ultimately something that lots of people can watch, much like CNN.
They are all conflictinators which is why I like Daily Show so I can laugh, and read a local news paper to find out what is really going on.
NPR is a bit better. They're only fault is that they pick news items that seem a bit democratic at times.
I'm not really sure why people think Cspan is slanted. I suppose you could fault camera time between parties but they have a good handle on that unless you just like repubs on the cam 24/7. But I don't like reality shows.
When I have I been dishonest. I don't believe I had a chance to be dishonest with you. This is all opinion, dude. Opinions are not honest or dishonest by definition unless you think its fact. I'm meaning your opinions.
