I'd say the system we have in place allows and rewards excessive selfishness. I would say that there is a serious problem in the job market, and a huge glut of income and wealth at the top, in tandem with the huge tax breaks they have gotten over the last few decades. American productivity ballooned over the same period (without compensation)... so I wouldn't think it is the incompetence of the majority.
