Conspicuous consumption at its worst. How far have we actually come from the days of the Robber Barons, Versailles, the Czars, King George III, or slavery itself? http://sibob.org/wordpress/

Being rich isn,t the problem. The problem lies in how they got rich and how they are getting richer now. There are good rich people who got it honestly and understand how to use it correctly to keep a country and it,s people going so they can continue to prosper. The crop of rich people that has grown over the last few decades who got rich by gameing the system and useing scams and questionable methods are what the problem is.A lot of them are motivated only by getting more money and don,t care how they go about getting it.They just cannot seem to understand to keep the growing process going they must put smething back in it.Its simple to make more money you don,t cut down the money tree you plant more trees.

speaking of wich, does it bother anyone else everytime we see lines of people sleeping on the streets over night to buy the latest techno gadget for hundreds of dollars, just to be the first on the block to have the new i-crap while our economy has others sleeping on the streets for lack of an alternative?
when did we lose our souls?
the rich i expect it from, but when did the rest of us forget to be human beings? - 6 months ago

The corporate behemoth, for which I used to work, once put out a full page advert showing a couple of 4 year olds talking on their mobile phones. Do 4 year olds really need their own personal phone? Big WTF here.

A question comes to mind Progresshiv.
The video is full of images of excessive opulence and abject poverty that illustrates the inequities in society nicely, but where would you draw the line? At what point is someone considered to be prospering too much at the expense of others? For the guy sleeping in cardboard eating out of the dumpster, the guy driving by in a Lexus on his way out to a nice dinner is just as outrageously wealthy as the guy in the stretch limo on his way to the yacht club appears to the man in the Lexus.
I do not mean to excuse the gap between the haves and have nots, but if some are to be cast as immorally profiting on the backs of the poor, one must draw a line to separate those offenders from the rest of society. Where would you draw the line?

An interesting proposition. Of course, it implies that the man who works for minimum wage is profiting off the back of the man sleeping on the cardboard too, that no matter how low your income it is too much. Is this what you are saying, or are you implying that I am some kind of greedy bastard?

I'm hoping that he will return at some point and clarify, I will extend him the benefit of the doubt in this case. And if his intent was to insult, well that will just stand as a mark of his character and there is little to be gained by getting into a squabble about it, that kind of thing is a wasted venture and only leads discussion away from the topic at hand

Just being flippant, robertjordan. But to answer your question, if you actively promote this zero-sum game that causes the increasing income disparity in our society, then you probably are a greedy bastard. Not "you" in the sense of "you, robertjordan personally", just the "you" that one occasionally uses instead of the word "one".
And I don't believe those who work for minimum wage are profiting off the back of the man sleeping in the cardboard box. While I appreciate the hyperbolic absurdity of the question (again, not being facetious, good satire does the same type of thing, only with more subtlety) the minimum wage worker didn't set this system in motion, they are just trying to survive. As to the broader point, at some level maybe those of us living above a certain standard of living are partly at fault. I don't know.
If you see someone in need, maybe you (the broader you) should try to help them out.
