‘Occupy’ protesters interrupt Ron Paul: ‘Why do you hate gays?’

As part of their promise to “go big,” protesters with the 99 Percent movement have been interrupting campaign-related events all over Iowa in the week leading up to the nation’s first major presidential candidate selection contest, and Texas Congressman Ron Paul was not given an exception.

During a rally with veterans last night, candidate Paul saw his speech interrupted by a group of about 20 occupiers, who began shouting as Paul was mid-sentence. After a few seconds, the crowd responded with a boisterous chant of the candidate’s name, over and over again.

“Why do you hate gays?” one of the protesters shouted. “Why do you hate the 99 percent?” Another reportedly asked why he wants to repeal Roe v. Wade and “control a woman’s reproductive decisions.”

“Freedom of speech, ain’t it wonderful?” Paul responded.

As the candidate’s supporters pushed them out of the hall, one woman kept audibly insisting that she’s a veteran, as is much of her family. Others with the group tried to explain that they supported Paul as well.

Paul has been by far the most friendly toward the 99 Percent movement out of all the Republican presidential candidates, calling it a “healthy” expression and a “legitimate effort,” although he’s also said that he’s not quite sure what they are protesting.

He’s further said that if the occupiers favor going after “crony capitalism,” he’s all for it.

    • He kinda dodges the question doesn't he? He starts talking about the economy but the issue was the gays. Although he has said again and again that he believes that gays have the right to be whomever they want to be, I just wish he would be a little less passive a little more aggressive on the gay rights.

    • Good. As someone who supports RP and the 99%; I think these are legitimate questions to ask of Ron. RP seems like the last hope this country has, but why does he hold such silly and unliberal views on gays and abortion. Doesn't he know that that goes against the libertarian mantra? Oh yeah, he's running on the republican ticket and wouldn't have a chance in hell if he vocally supported these positions...

    • Ron Paul is an old hack, a liar, a anarchist in the strictest sense of the term. He needs someone to yell him down and all the other rethug and blue dog dems and so called progressive politicians. The more we yell the more they get scared for their jig to be up. The electoral system is a joke....keep yelling...keep crying the emporer has no clothes!

    • I was behind the movement from its inception... But there are individuals amongst the group that fail to rally together and only push their own agenda, hoping the mass of other people behind them will support whatever they say.

Ron Paul's response is perfect... Thank you to the ignorant masses (though you are marching... but aimlessly) for bringing Paul on the front page once again.

May the others who aren't so stupid and childish pass on their wisdom and hopefully turn this movement in the right direction... I've watched it fall apart, it can still make a difference if only we put our differences aside and address the real problems.

actually as an active member of Occupy Denver I can personally attest to the fact that Ron Paul's following there is significant. I can honestly say that I did not see any other signs for other candidates but his and there was ample support for him. He is not perfect, but he is the best candidate running. It is either him or a Neo-con. Oh and there is the "Democrat" that is actually a Neo-con too that you could vote for.

    • as far as I know, and I've seen quite a few OWS chat rooms.....there are quite a few Occupiers/Protesters that like Ron Paul.....some of them don't, but alot do....I don't believe he hates gays....I think that is just a ploy by the Globalists to raise suspicion over Ron Paul.....the Globalists do not like Ron Paul at all.....

I do not believe Mr. Paul hates gays either. I do believe he simply feels as though they do not deserve the same rights that he enjoys because they are different than he is and he does not approve of their lifestyle.

I do not believe any elected representative should be allowed to hold their job if they are not willing to represent each and every person in their district evenly and fairly. I do not know if Mr. Obama will, I do know Mr. Paul will not.

I think if anything you are completely wrong. Personally Ron Paul may not be very comfortable with gays but he certainly thinks everyone should enjoy the same rights. That is a core principal of libertarianism.

You have the right to your opinion, I have the right to mine. I have based my opinion on the things I have read about him and things that he has written about others. I actually wanted to be able to vote for him but choose not to because of what I have read.

I agree, storming a speech FULL OF RON PAUL SUPPORTERS and yelling at him really isn't the right way to go on this, I mean, I couldn't even understand a word they were saying because of all the cheering the RP supporters were doing, I support Occupy, I think its great, and these girls had the right idea, but their yelling and protesting isnt going to help Occupy if they get drowned out by RP and his followers and nobody can tell what the hell they're saying. Keep protesting, just do it somewhere that people can actually hear you.

I'm high as Giraffe pussy doing an introspective analysis and I must say, this chick is retarded and is getting Ron even more support by showing how uncivilized she is... just look at the comments on youtube. I know so many young and diverse potential voters that say Ron will be a prospect they will consider.

    • I think Obama hates Afghan and even American children born to "terrorists" more than Paul is alleged to hate "Gays".... Has Paul ever allowed the military to continue drone bombing raids that are known for being off target and killing innocents often children?

Oh yeah that whole "Occupy" terminology is offensive, I know brand recognition is important, but it's offensive...

I wonder if these "occupant" people in all their insensitivity would qualify for "hating" Native American Indians?... Because quite a few of them refuse to change the terminology to something a little more considerate...

Is insensitivity hate? Because that's all I have to assume Paul could be guilty of towards "Gays", there really is no evidence of him saying hateful things to or about them... I guess saying "government has no place in marriage" therefore he couldn't outlaw gay marriage or anything is "hateful"....?

      Your glaring hypocrisy is comical.

Anybody who has a racist, offensive avatar like Obama with a Hitler mustache has zero credibility on any discussion of hate, since such a person is clearly using his avatar as a vehicle of hate speech.

The irony of defending Paul with such an avatar is idiotic beyond words, and only offers further proof that Paul and his supporters are racist douche bags.

Yes... because we can discredit people based on an image... We take this from a robot-green-sexless... what? Racism? I find your existence offensive and racist... But guess what, that's not how we have to discredit you... Your lack of actual healthy debate is plenty to dismiss you.

You've just proven you're too shallow to even read words and are judging based on an image. That's beyond racist and extremely bigoted.

Sorry you're so butt hurt about your dear leader being exposed as a racist dick.

If you are so blind and ignorant that you can't recognize a racist prick than you have my sympathy.
