Groundhog Day: What a Stupid Holiday

Groundhog Day, a tradition that has taken an especially firm stranglehold on the small community of Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania since 1886, relies on whether or not local groundhogs see their shadow upon exiting their burrows on the morning of February 2nd. On a deeper level, the tradition's foundation teeters precariously on whether or not a groundhog understands what a shadow is.
Many mammals compete to be the face of Groundhog Day. Those vying for the holiday spotlight (...the Sun) include Wiarton Willie from Ontario, Shubenacadie Sam from Nova Scotia, Staten Island Chuck, Bill Murray, and the "Prairie Prognosticator" Balzac Billy, whose name sounds suspiciously like a scrotum.

The groundhog part of this is a rather minor and fun addition to the traditional marking of the midpoint between winter solstice and spring equinox - astronomical events having vastly more practical meaning than the mythological birth and alleged resurrection from the dead of a carpenter two thousand years ago.
Being a species largely dependent on what we can grow or raise for our own sustenance, knowing when it will be safe to plant the first crops is essential. The Irish/Scottish legend of the Cailleach Bheur is the origin of the this celebration. She is the hag goddess of winter who, on February 1st, if she emerges from her lair to gather firewood on a fair day, means more winter but, if she remains indoors, winter will be short.
She is still very significant to today's celts and neopagans and the celebration of Imbolc.

Who cares. People need to lighten up. Besides, the groundhog is about as accurate as the weather people.

Right on Joy! This is a fun, cute little holiday. Why would someone hate it? It's not a money driven holiday like Xmas. It's a day where people get out, get together and have fun. BTW, I think ground hogs are cute. :)
