Seven Words You Can Say on Radio: Carlin’s Daughter Gets a Comedy Interview Show

At a time when it seems that everyone and his brother has a show or podcast about comedians, Sirius XM believes it has found a new wrinkle on the format: a program hosted by Kelly Carlin, the daughter of the famous stand-up George Carlin.

On Thursday the satellite radio broadcaster is expected to announce that it will carry “The Kelly Carlin Show,” a new monthly program on which Ms. Carlin will speak with comedy personalities about their work and their lives. The first installment, scheduled for Sunday, will feature an interview with Robin Williams and will be heard on Sirius XM’s Raw Dog Comedy channel as well as a new channel, Carlin’s Corner, that will focus on George Carlin’s performances and material.

Ms. Carlin, who grew up in close proximity to stand-up comedians, said that she did not really begin engaging with these performers until after her father’s death in 2008.

“The day after he died,” she said in a telephone interview, “many started calling me and we started connecting. These amazing, kindhearted comedians, like Lewis Black and Garry Shandling, just took me into the fold. I felt like I’d gained a whole new family.”

In talking with her guests — Mr. Black, Eddie Izzard and Chris Hardwick are among the performers planned for future shows — Ms. Carlin said she would not necessarily focus on the craft of comedy but hoped the interviews would go in many different directions.

“I’m always curious about their personal creative process,” she said, “but also their journey as humans. Do they have a spiritual bent to them? What are their politics? Are they optimists or pessimists? What’s their worldview in general? That’s the stuff that really fascinates me.”

Ms. Carlin said she would also draw upon her master’s degree in psychology and the three years she spent as a therapist “to create a safe space for deep conversation.”

More recently, Ms. Carlin has hosted her own podcast called “Waking From the American Dream,” a title inspired by one of her father’s well-known routines.

She has also been an advocate for a campaign to have a block named for her father in Morningside Heights in Manhattan, where he grew up — a campaign that has been opposed by the Rev. Raymond Rafferty, the pastor at Corpus Christi Church, where the comedian went to school.

Ms. Carlin said she was optimistic she would eventually prevail in that effort. “Having my father’s name on a sign on a street is not going to twist the minds of the children of Corpus Christi any more than the culture already twists it,” she said.

In her new endeavor, at least, Ms. Carlin will not have to be diplomatic or avoid the seven words, famously identified by her father, that you can never say on television.

“That’s part of the reason I love satellite radio and podcasting,” she said. “I don’t have to worry about the quote-unquote Carlin words.”

    • This is wonderful news! I wish I had Sirius XM to hear "The Kelly Carlin Show." The format sounds like it would be very fun to listen to. I'm such a huge George Carlin fan. I wish Kelly much luck. :)

"She has also been an advocate for a campaign to have a block named for her father in Morningside Heights in Manhattan, where he grew up — a campaign that has been opposed by the Rev. Raymond Rafferty, the pastor at Corpus Christi Church, where the comedian went to school."

Screw that shit! I think Kelly will prevail in that effort too!

Thanks for telling us about this, EV. I wouldn't have known otherwise.

George Carlin's daughter Kelly to host radio show

      .

George Carlin's daughter Kelly Carlin is taking her talents to Sirius XM with a new monthly radio show, the New York Times reports.

Carlin will be the host of "The Kelly Carlin Show," in which she'll converse with a variety of comics about their industry as well as their lives.

"I'm always curious about their personal creative process, but also their journey as humans," Carlin tells the Times. "Do they have a spiritual bent to them? What are their politics? Are they optimists or pessimists? What's their worldview in general? That's the stuff that really fascinates me."

On her show, Carlin says she hopes to "create a safe space for deep conversation." She'll be talking to the likes of Lewis Black, Eddie Izzard, Chris Hardwick and Robin Williams, who will be on her first episode this Sunday.

"The Kelly Carlin Show" is set to air on Sirius XM's Raw Dog Comedy channel, in addition to a new channel called "Carlin's Corner" that will be dedicated to the works of the comic legend, who passed away in 2008.

There's also an added bonus with her show: "That's part of the reason why I love satellite radio and podcasting," Carlin said, "I don't have to worry about the quote-unquote Carlin words."

Kelly Carlin will interview Robin Williams, Eddie Izzard, more on new SiriusXM show

      .

If you’ve ever just heard of the A Carlin Home Companion, images of a cramped-in radio station with the most subversive comedic voices in comedy talking about what’s wrong with the world would most likely come up. However, while having those types of comedians that both knew and carry on the comedic influence of George Carlin mentioned and talked about in it, the show is actually Kelly Carlin‘s, the one and only daughter of George Carlin; it’s her one-woman piece about growing up a Carlin.

Whether you have indeed heard of Companion or not, you’re about to hear a lot more from Kelly, as SiriusXM just announced that she’ll host a once-a-month show on their Raw Dog and Carlin’s Corner comedy channels, where she’ll talk both about her famous dad but more importantly about the art form of comedy with the likes of Eddie Izzard, Lewis Black and Chris Hardwick. The Kelly Carlin Show will kick off this Sunday, Feb. 12 at 7:00 pm ET with guest Robin Williams.

And although Kelly isn’t a comedian, she’s surely no stranger to this type of format since she’s the host of her own popular podcast, Waking From The American Dream, part of film director Kevin Smith’s podcast network. She’s also the producer of Showtime’s acclaimed series The Green Room with Paul Provenza.

"The Kelly Carlin Show," the new monthly show on Raw Dog Comedy and Carlin's Corner channels to launch with special guest Robin Williams

      .

      NEW YORK, Feb. 9, 2012 /PRNewswire/ --

Sirius XM Radio (NASDAQ: SIRI) announced today that Kelly Carlin, daughter of George Carlin, one of the most influential comedians of all time, will host a new monthly show on Raw Dog Comedy, channel 99, and on Carlin's Corner, the new 24/7 channel devoted to George Carlin, channel 400.

Each month, The Kelly Carlin Show will feature Kelly interviewing a different comedian, stand-up comedy, personal stories and memories about her legendary and beloved father. The monthly show will kick off with a revealing conversation with special guest Robin Williams, during which the two will discuss Williams' experience on The Richard Pryor Show and Mork & Mindy, what it takes to be an actor versus a stand-up comedian and Williams' thoughts on the end of the world.

The Kelly Carlin Show will premiere on Sunday, February 12 at 7:00 pm ET and will air the first Sunday of every month on Raw Dog Comedy, channel 99. The Kelly Carlin Show will also air the first Monday of every month at 8:00 pm ET on Carlin's Corner, channel 400.

Upcoming episodes are scheduled to feature conversations with special guests Eddie Izzard, Lewis Black and Chris Hardwick.

SiriusXM Raw Dog Comedy features uncensored comedy from the edge: classic comedy, the hottest new stand-ups and original shows. The channel features shows hosted by comedian Jim Breuer, Tom Papa, the irreverent music host and musician Mojo Nixon, alternative comedy "championer" Mark Says Hi!, live morning host Sonny Fox, the smart and edgy Filip and Fredrik and others.

The hour-long monthly show will also air on SiriusXM's Carlin's Corner, the channel featuring albums, concerts and comedy from the archives of George Carlin. Subscribers can listen to SiriusXM's Carlin's Corner channel online through SiriusXM Internet Radio, through the SiriusXM Internet Radio App for smartphones and mobile devices, and by satellite on the new SiriusXM Lynx and SiriusXM Edge radios.

Kelly Carlin is a writer/performer and is currently touring the country for her acclaimed one person show "A Carlin Home Companion."

George Carlin (1937-2008) was a Grammy®-Award winning stand-up comedian, actor and author. Throughout his more than five decade career, Carlin released twenty-two solo albums and three books, which were all New York Times Best-Sellers. The five-time Emmy nominated comedian starred in fourteen HBO Specials and was the first host of Saturday Night Live and appeared on The Tonight Show over 130 times. Carlin was bestowed with the "Freedom of Speech" Award by the First Amendment Center in 2002 and in June 2008, Carlin was named 11th recipient of The Kennedy Center Mark Twain Prize for American Humor.

    • Cool. Does anyone know what time on Sunday her show starts? Since it's a monthly show do you think they will have repeats? I sure would like to hear this show. We might actually get a whole new insight in what makes these comedians tick.
