OK Folks, so what are our thoughts? Genetically aberant? Fracking waste? Monsanto-esque chemicals? Tree producing some sort of blue nut meats? Excessive elderberry consumption(odd behavior for squirrels and may explain toothrot)?
Just to try to keep some levity thier is the critical mass condition for our squirrels, expoure to fracking waste causes aberant genetic weakness of some sort, exposure to "agricultural chemicals" leading to diabetic type symptoms, leads to sugar cravings and eating of elderberries

WTF?...did it fall in a bucket of something that hasn't all washed off? Cool looking regardless...hope it's not harming the little fuzz ball.

I wonder if this poor squirrel got into some chemicals. After all, I did read about green rabbits in Molly Ivins' book called "Bushwhacked." The rabbits lived near a CIC (Chemical Insecticide Corporation) site in New Jersey.

No long ago there where photos floating around of green polar bears, something to do with algea seeping into the hollow cores of thier insulating fur.
The chemical option is a plausable answer, but what kinda chemicle would do this? That purple is reminiscent of the color one gets when including gold in the mixture to make glass

I've heard about the polar bears. But when it comes to this squirrel, I'm just not sure. It's anyone's guess at this point.

Cool as Hell!!! Many folks do not know the chemicals used to make colored glass... Red Glass has a large content of gold that creates the red color, usually true red glass is a bit more expensive than any other colored glass... =)

All I can say is that I may have learned a few things in my life...
This precise coloration of the squirrel would something akin to a 5unit cobal and 3unit gold to 100units silica mix... from my limited knowledge that is...

Yeah I have seen two albino squirrels, brown, red, grey, and black all the time.... but purple? Even exotic "birds of paradise" only have small patches (for the most part) of purple.

That squirrel is booful!
We have a black squirrel that shows up in our yard pretty often (I put food out for him) and the second year he was coming around pretty regularly I named him 'Angus b" in homage to our black schnauzer that we had to put to sleep a few years ago :-).Pwr 2 the periwinkle squirrels! I know right!? It's gorgeous, but conversely with all my time spent around animals and the natural world it really threw me for a loop... took me several minutes to get used enough to the idea of a pur-pink-le (periwinkle) squirrel to start seeing the beauty.

I know this is going to sound weird, but I'm going to put it out there anyway ... I hope this isn't an unhealthy thing for this squirrel -- I would hate to see something this unusual be related to something that will eventually kill this amazing creature.

I agree entirely, one of the theories on its odd coloration is exposure to hydraulic fracturing waste chemicals.

It's really interesting because it's highly unlikey to be a dye job or some type of external stain because the interior of nostrils, lips, and ears are also colored. The ears are the most telling as the color is noticable stronger in areas closer to the blood vessels... it's very very odd.

I would love to see that, if there are suddenly juvenile squirrels with this color running around it would point towards to a genetic anomaly like albinoism, or the phosforescent mice we have engineered.

I read the article at the link. To be honest, this guy is a screwball. His ingestion of colloidal silver is what caused his skin to turn blue and he STILL takes it. Says it cures other things like his arthritis, which is highly questionable without an in depth scientific study. Takes all types I guess.

in the case of the squirrel Thats not a stain folks, as you can see from one of the images(at 8 seconds on the "video") the interior of it's lips and nostril are also purple, the interior of it's ear show stronger coloration at points proximal to blood supply then the outer edges of the ear. Reminds me of the "Blue Man" Paul Karason, except his coloration did not extend into his hair. Any ideas folks?
