Pass The Butter

Margarine was originally manufactured to fatten turkeys. When it killed the turkeys, the people who had put all the money into the research wanted a payback so they put their heads together to figure out what to do with this product to get their money back.
It was a white substance with no food appeal so they added the yellow coloring and sold it to people to use in place of butter. How do you like it? They have come out with some clever new flavorings.
DO YOU KNOW.. The difference between margarine and butter?
Read on to the end...gets very interesting!
Both have the same amount of calories.
Butter is slightly higher in saturated fats at 8 grams ;compared to 5 grams for margarine.
Eating margarine can increase heart disease in women by 53% over eating the same amount of butter, according to a recent Harvard Medical Study.
Eating butter increases the absorption of many other nutrients in other foods.
Butter has many nutritional benefits where margarine has a few and
only because they are added!
Butter tastes much better than margarine and it can enhance the flavors of other foods.
Butter has been around for centuries where margarine has been around for less than 100 years .
And now, for Margarine..
Very High in Trans fatty acids.
Triples risk of coronary heart disease .
Increases total cholesterol and LDL (this is the bad cholesterol) and lowers HDL cholesterol, (the good cholesterol)
Increases the risk of cancers up to five times..
Lowers quality of breast milk.
Decreases immune response.
Decreases insulin response.
And here's the most disturbing fact.... HERE IS THE PART THAT IS VERY INTERESTING!
Margarine is but ONE MOLECULE away from being PLASTIC... and shares 27 ingredients with PAINT
These facts alone were enough to have me avoiding margarine for life and anything else that is hydrogenated (this means hydrogen is added, changing the molecular structure of the substance).
You can try this yourself:
Purchase a tub of margarine and leave it open in your garage or shaded area. Within a couple of days you will notice a couple of things:
* no flies, not even those pesky fruit flies will go near it (that should tell you something)
* it does not rot or smell differently because it has no nutritional value ; nothing will grow on it. Even those teeny weenie microorganisms will not a find a home to grow. Why? Because it is nearly plastic . Would you melt your Tupperware and spread that on your toast?
Share This With Your Friends.....(If you want to butter them up')!
Chinese Proverb: When someone shares something of value with you and you benefit from it, you have a moral obligation to share it with others.
Pass the BUTTER PLEASE, and forward to family and friends whose health you hold dear…And that's why I like my ........Butter...................

Was margarine originally manufactured to fatten turkeys?
In: Turkeys [Edit categories]
Answers.com > Wiki Answers > Categories > Animal Life > Vertebrates > Birds > Bird Species > Turkeys > Was margarine originally manufactured to fatten turkeys?
Answer:
MARGARINE
The discovery of margarine was motivated in the half 19th century by the need to find a cheap source of dietary fats for the French workers in a period of great increase in the population and shortage of butter. Around 1850, beef tallow and pork fats accounted for about half of the dietary supply of lipids but this source was vitamin-poor, poorly digestible and not spreadable. To counteract the shortage of dairy fats and their poor quality which could raise some difficulties not only in the population but also in the military troops, the French government, under the rule of Napoleon III, decided in 1866, during the international exhibition in Paris, to launch a competition for the research of a new cheap dietary fat source.
A French chemist, Hippolyte Mège Mouriès (1817-1880), well known for several inventions in the field of food processing, was selected and the government gave him the private imperial farm of the "Faisanderie" in Vincennes to do his research on the processing of a butter-like fat. His method was based on the mechanical mixing of skimmed milk with an oil, obtained from beef tallow under pressure at 30-40°C. The patent was registered in Paris on 15 July 1869 (BF 86480). Mège named his new fat "oléo-margarine".

The claim that some comestible is but a "single molecule away" from being a decidedly inedible (or even toxic) substance has been applied to a variety of processed foods:
[Collected via e-mail, November 2005]I was told that the difference between Cool Whip and Styrofoam is one molecule... is this true???
[Collected via e-mail, December 2006]Is velveeta processed cheese food really one molecule different from plastic?
[Collected via e-mail, March 2007]heard that Pam spray is 1 molecule away from plastic and is therefore dangerous??
[Collected via e-mail, January 2008]I am tired of hearing my husband say that Cheez Whiz is only 2 ingredients different from garbage bags. Can you please help me set him straight?
These types of statements (even if they were true) are essentially meaningless. Many disparate substances share similar chemical properties, but even the slightest variation in molecular structure can make a world of difference in the qualities of those substances. - 3 months ago

Some of the "Butter vs. margarine" mailings circulated in 2005 had this preface tacked onto them:
Margarine was originally manufactured to fatten turkeys. When it killed the turkeys, the people who had put all the money into the research wanted a payback so they put their heads together to figure out what to do with this product to get their money back. It was a white substance with no food appeal so they added the yellow coloring and sold it to people to use in place of butter. How do you like it? They have come out with some clever new flavorings.
Contrary to the claim, margarine was not invented as a turkey fattener. It was formulated in 1869 by Hippolyte Mège Mouriès of France in response to Napoleon III's offering of a prize to whoever could succeed at producing a viable low-cost substitute for butter. Mège Mouriès' concoction, which he dubbed oleomargarine, was achieved by adding salty water, milk, and margaric acid to softened beef fat. By the turn of the century, the beef fat in the original recipe had been replaced by vegetable oils.

Fiction!
Margarine was the idea of a Frenchman named Hippolyte Mege-Mouriez in response to a request from Emperor Louis Napoleon for ideas for a substitute for butter. In 1870 he used margaric acid and the name of his formulation became known as Margarine. It became a hit in the United States in the late 1800's.
"Margarine is but ONE MOLECULE away from being PLASTIC... and shares 27 ingredients with PAINT"
This is meaningless because if you think about it water (H2O) is only one atom away from being hydrogen peroxide (H2O2).
I still prefer butter and have eaten nothing but the real thing for years.

I'm not saying anything about its nutritional value, although what you just said is equally misleading. It may be bad for you, but equating eating margarine with eating plastic or paint is an absurd exaggeration. Eating paint is extremely life threatening and requires immediate medical attention. Eating margarine is not. Saying that margarine "shares ingredients with paint" has absolutely no informational value and is a statement deliberately designed to be misleading.
Margarine is an organic substance, it is derived from plant oils or soy. This "one molecule away" claim, true or not, doesn't actually MEAN anything. It doesn't mean eating margarine is the same as eating plastic. It doesn't mean margarine is a toxic dangerous chemical. That statement is designed to mislead.
I'm not trying to defend margarine, I'm trying to point out misleading information that is neither useful nor necessary that actually serves to remove credibility from the article rather than support its argument.

Hmmmm, so is science finally catching up to what I have been saying for along time now? When I was young my mother was preaching the health benefits of margarine, so I showed her a little something...
Margarine hardens, really hardens like epoxy if exposed to enough oxygen and heat...
Butter does not...Simple point of fact, there is heat and oxygen in your blood, and when combined with margarine it causes arterial plaque buildups.
My mother chose to ignore my warnings, and has since had two coronary infarctions, a four way bypass, and a multitude of other issues revolving around arterial pulmonary disease... my father who taught me about margarine is one of the healthiest 60 y/o's on the planet and he eats red meat, drinks beer, and smokes pot.... Hmmmmmm

I love butter. While my sons were growing up, butter was bad, margarine was good. I denied my family butter, because they lied. I now use butter. No margarine. We have not used margarine in 25 years or so for the reasons listed in the opening post. Only organic butter with the emphasis on "organic". We get it from the Mennonites in large 3 pound rolls for baking and the usual 1/4 lb sticks for everyday. Margarine is bad stuff. Good post.

A MARGARINE STORY . . .
A Nebraska teenager, 16 year old Tommy Mason, is getting to live his 15 minutes of fame. Imperial Margarine wants him to be their new spokesperson and they say they’re willing to wait until his trial and jail time is over.
Tommy was arrested last month on charges of indecent exposure and public indecency. Luckily for Tommy he’s a minor and will only serve four months in a juvenile detention centre. Some think that isn’t enough time.
“That’s not what margarine is for”, says supermarket manager Mike Johnson, "And while I don't care what product he uses for pulling his cord, I'd prefer he didn't do it in my store."
Imperial Margarine spokesperson Bill Simpson agrees but says “who are we to tell people how to use our product? After all, we sell margarine, not morality.”
