Richard Branson: I asked for weed at White House

When you go to a White House state dinner and you’re lucky enough to get some face time with the president, what do you ask the president?

“I asked him if I could have a spliff,” businessman and Virgin Group honcho Richard Branson told a crowd gathered at The Atlantic’s Washington offices Thursday, the day after attending the dinner for British Prime Minister David Cameron.

He told the person that he was talking to that he was only joking after he said it and got a reaction from that person, (probably a confused look), Not that he was joking about asking the question.

    • More proof that the rich don't think rules apply to them. Tell this to someone serving time for a spliff....makes me mad!

    • You would think he could afford his own, no one likes a person that is always bumming weed. Branson, break open your wallet and go but some, cheapo.

    • If more people honestly talked about cannabis hemp, the President and the rest wouldn't be able to 'spin' the madness.

      Kudos to Richard Branson.

Flaunting federal law in the presidents face? The president himself said:

"I inhaled frequently. That was the point." - Barack Obama, U.S. President

"The war on drugs has been an utter failure. We need to rethink and decriminalize our nation's marijuana laws." -Barack Obama, January 2004

The federal law was put in place by a president who left office in shame. The federal laws against cannabis hemp, should have left office when he did. It shouldn't have remained for politicians to use for political gain!

IMHO, the war on cannabis is smoke and mirrors, distracting people from the plant, which isn't a drug, ie hemp. The term 'drug' puts the fear factor into the conversation. We can't even talk about hemp, because they have circumvented the discussion, using the drug rhetoric.

I think the real goal is to eliminate the conversation about hemp as a renewable resource, which could improve the planet, via environmentally friendly plastic, as well as other environmentally friendly products.

The conversation about the drug, divides people and thwarts the conversation about a plant, which would threaten many industries. Money has taken over politics in America. The main contributors are corporations, which benefit from the elimination of their competition. ie. hemp.

So what are we talking about now? I thought it was the kind you would smoke, like in a "spliff" as in what Branson was referring to in the article above.

At one point you are talking forcing the president et al to be honest.

"If more people honestly talked about cannabis hemp, the President and the rest wouldn't be able to 'spin' the madness. "

Then when I attack his hypocrisy you cite him "spinning".

"The war on drugs has been an utter failure. We need to rethink and decriminalize our nation's marijuana laws." -Barack Obama, January 2004

When I call it the lie it was you move on to talk about the problems with the "drug" conversation" clouding the hemp issue. Why are you here exactly?

No, in my humble opinion the war on cannabis is a sham. Using spun facts to distort the issue, making ordinary American's too dizzy to realize the actual war is on hemp. Hemp is more of a threat to those supporting the war on cannabis.

Granted the schedule of cannabis is the law, but the law is wrong. Facts really do matter. There are so many things much more dangerous than cannabis. IMHO, they are spinning drugs, to distract from the fact that they are eliminating their natural competition in the process. As long as people only talk drugs, hemp is ignored, or rideculed. But, the fact is hemp can be utilized to manufacture many of the things now made from oil.

Who's causing the main problems in my life today? The oil companies! Higher gas prices don't just hurt me at the pump. They hurt me through almost everything I purchase to live. Don't you think, 'if hemp could be used to make biodegradable plastic', shouldn't it at least be discussed. We need jobs. Even the oceans are polluted with plastic. As long as we stay on the current courst, it's only going to get worse. The oil companies don't want people moving away from oil. They are making record profits right now!

Chapter 9, of "The Emperor Wears No Clothes" explains it the best. Read it

Of course he would! The man created Virgin Galactic. In a perfect world one day I will be able to enjoy a spliff aboard one of his Earth-orbiting space cruise ships while looking down at our beautiful blue rock from the view of the gods.

Making jokes about the issue isn't going to make legalization happen, if he really cared about ending the hypocrisy he would put some of his millions into a public information campaign.

Agreed. It is time for some celebs to put up some cash to help fight Prohibition. But, who knows, he may have already spent money on the cause. At least he has the guts to make his position known to the power.
