I saw a movie based on his life. I do not know how accurate it was, but it seems that as a kid he used to entertain his family and friends with his jokes which were not insulting. The relatives said he should do a routine on a stage with his brother, so they did.

They were up on stage, and it seems that the humor his family liked was not deemed funny by the crowd that was rather "rough." (Happened to me once on stage in NYC.)

"Wrinkles" got angry and started insulting people in the audience. But to his own surprise, they started laughing.
