Socialist Party USA.....The Real Democratic Party!!!! Wake Up People.

The following points represent the key ideas of agreement of the Socialist Party USA. We encourage you to read and discuss them, and if you agree consider joining the Socialist Party :
1) The Socialist Party is a democratic socialist organization. We see socialism as a new social and economic order in which workers and consumers control production and community residents control their neighborhoods, homes and school and the production of society is used for the benefit of all humanity, not the private profit of a few..
2) We see the working class as in a key and central position to fight back against the ruling class and its power. The working class is the major force worldwide that can lead the way to a socialist future – to a real radical democracy from below.
3) We stand in opposition to all forms of oppression including but not limited to racism, sexism and homophobia.
4) We are a “multi-tendency” organization. We orient ourselves around our principles and develop a common program, but our members have various underlying philosophies and views of the world. Therefore we reject vanguardism and democratic centralism.
5) We advocate for independent political action outside the Democratic and Republican parties.
6) Our tactics in the struggle for radical democratic change reflects our ultimate goal of a society founded on principles
of egalitarian, non-exploitative and non-violent relations among all people and between all peoples. -

Actually Spain was doing GREAT with a debt level hovering at around 36% of GDP until the PRIVATE sector ran amok and crashed the economy. Of course when an economy crashes due to Private Sector malfesance, revenues decrease and debt rises. But it is NOT..I repeat..IS NOT because of government spending that ANY of the now failing European countries are awash in debt. It is a DIRECT result of Private banks performing at BEST extremely high risk investments with the Nation's deposits...and at worst (which is what I believe to be true) they were outright stealing money through market manipulation.
Spain and Ireland were considered THRIVING economies before the global banking fiasco!
Interesting to note that Iceland had a superb economy working under a primarily Socialist model. Then there was pressure from outside financing to open up their banking system to Private investment...after that..their entire economy collapsed! Then, when they were being strong armed into accepting a Bailout and instituting Austerity measures, they told the IMF and the Eurozone to PISS OFF...and the banks could SUCK IT! They refused to pay for a private banks complete and total lunacy! As a result, they have been threatened with Isolation, and their Credit Rating has been downgraded TWICE. So they had a second vote...guess what they said...PISS OFF!! AGAIN!! The most astonishing thing is, now that they have re-socialized their banking system and allowed the PEOPLE (i.e. their elected representatives) to have control of the monetary system instead of a private, for profit bank..they are doing rather well. I guess "standard of living" IS subjective.

It really sucks. As much as I just want to write in Bernie Sanders or vote Green, I fear we'll be a third-world country after four years of Romney.
But that's not deterring me from getting involved at the local level. It would be AWESOME if we could get the socialists or the greens to take over one state's legislature.
Hint....
Oregon has a far better chance of this happening than here in Missouri.

Who's wanting more of the same? It's pretty obvious to me that we're all pretty fed up with the way things are, and are fearful of the perceivable future. However, I don't believe we're a third world nation yet.
Sure, we have a few things in common with regards to civil liberties and cronyism.
It's because of the things you mention that my family's farm got foreclose and sold out from under us back when I was a kid. It's because of the things you mention that I can barely make our mortgage payments and live in fear that my wife or I are going to get injured or sick. It's because of the things you mention that created this economic shitstorm today.
But where we differ is that most of us here believe that we have a say in how things ought to be, and that our society functions best when each and every one of us has access to the most basic building blocks that make our communities, towns, cities and a nation--things such as education, health care, a clean environment, safe food and a modern infrastructure. We don't mind paying our share of taxes so long as everyone else is too. We don't mind regulations so long as they're not favoring corporations or certain segments of society over others. Oh, and we don't mind having a government who helps people who can't help themselves.
Why, you ask? Well, it's not because we believe that socialism is perfect or is going to solve every problem that we face. It's because because we've seen what happens when the government "gets out of the way." Not only does it just enrich the few at the expense of the many, but it eventually fosters a government that only serves the few at the expense of the many.
Libertarianism just doesn't work.

JohnA:
What redistribution? There are more regulations and taxes in India and China and businesses are FLOCKING to those countries to do business. Also Japan is more regulated than the US Economy, and they are doing well. The regulation "red herring" is a joke for people who don't bother to do any independent research. The only regulations that China and India are more lax on are labor standards. That means you are correct, their is a redistribution going in, and that redistribution is UPWARDS.
I know for a fact that we agree on MANY thing JohnA so I am not trying to bash you with this response..just get a little frustrated by partisan bickering. Though I see by a later posting you made that you are not on board with Romney either. Just glad you can see that Obama is a corporatist as well.
My brother and I were talking last night, and we both agreed on this...the ONE sure bet you could make is that Banks (and corporations in general, especially multi-nationals) will continue to act like sociopaths, and the population will continue to be idiots.

You wouldn't want to become a social democracy would you? Why, if you were to do that you would end up with universal health care, strong safety nets, less military spending, more wealth equality, the repeal of Citizens United, truth in media laws, higher minimum wages, etc. Hell you might even end up with an economy as strong as your social democracy neighbors to the north.
I am sure there are a lot of Americans who would like all of those things if you didn't have to use that evil word social. There is nothing social about the United States. I guess that makes the U.S. anti-social.

You will soon wake up to the fact the only way out of this Capitalistic War based Economy and the Corrupt Government it has brought us is to Unite in a real effort to change the World.
-
Socialist Party USA: 2012-2013 National Platform
The Socialist Party stands for the abolition of every form of domination and exploitation, whether based on social class, gender, race/ethnicity, age, education, sexual orientation, or other characteristics. We are committed to the transformation of capitalism through the creation of a democratic socialist society based on compassion, empathy, and respect as well as the development of new social structures. Socialism will establish a new social and economic order in which workers and community members will take responsibility for and control of their interpersonal relationships, their neighborhoods, their local government, and the production and distribution of all goods and services.
For these reasons we call for social ownership and democratic control of productive resources, for a guarantee to all of the right to participate in societal production, and to a fair share of society's product, in accordance with individual needs.
As we pursue a socialist transformation of society, we join with others in making radical demands on the existing system: demands that challenge the basic assumptions of a capitalist market economy while pointing the way to a new society. Although reforms will not in themselves bring about socialism, the fight for them will advance the cause by demonstrating the inherent limitations and injustice of the capitalist system. As we build the socialist movement, we organize around a platform committed to our common and interdependent struggles and aspirations.

Socialist Party USA: 2012-2013 National Platform
InternationalThe United States is the sole remaining global superpower. The U.S. government uses its overwhelming military power to consolidate its strategic hold over the entire world and to defend and advance the interests of U.S. owned corporations as they exploit the working people and natural resources of the entire planet. We stand in total opposition to U.S. imperialism and the current “war on terror” which is just another subterfuge for U.S. imperialism.
We call for the closing of all U.S. military facilities at home and abroad that train foreign military and paramilitary personnel.
We call for the United States to immediately and unconditionally withdraw its forces from Iraq and Afghanistan.
We call for an end to the U.S. occupation of the province of Guantanamo, Cuba.
We call for an end to the Israeli occupation of the West Bank-East Jerusalem and Gaza, and an end to all U.S. aid to Israel, as a precondition for peace.
We support an immediate cutoff of all U.S. military aid to Colombia, and all other recipients.
We call for the abolition of the Central Intelligence Agency, the National Security Agency, and all other institutions of covert warfare.
We stand for unconditional disarmament by the United States.
We call for an international treaty outlawing all weapons of mass destruction, including the use of depleted uranium in conventional weapons.
We call for an immediate 50% cut in the military budget, followed by additional cuts, with the aim of rapidly reducing the military budget to less than 10% of its current level, with the "peace dividend" directed to essential social services and to the cost of cleaning up contaminated military sites.
We call for the disbanding of NATO and all other aggressive military alliances, and the closing of all overseas bases.
We call for an end to U.S. arms sales throughout the world.
We call for the U.S. to pay off its debts to the United Nations, an end to veto power in the UN, and an end to permanent membership on the UN Security Council.
We call for a constitutional amendment requiring a binding vote of the people on all issues of war or military intervention.
We support the right of soldiers to form unions to represent their views and interests. - 11 months ago

This means every worker has a voice:
-
Socialist Party USA: 2012-2013 National Platform
LaborThe Socialist Party stands for the right of all workers to organize, for worker control of industry through the democratic organization of the workplace, for the social ownership of the means of production and distribution, and for international solidarity among working people based on common opposition to global capitalism and imperialism. We believe that the international organization of labor is the only way of combating the exploitation of workers in a global capitalist economy. Working people have no country, but rather an international bond based on class. Workers throughout the world have far more in common with each other across national boundaries than with their bosses in their own countries. Ultimately a socialist revolution must be an international revolution that cannot survive if confined to individual countries amidst capitalist imperialism.
We support the right of any number of interested workers in a workplace to form a union with no limits on the subjects upon which employees and unions may bargain with employers.
We support the right of public sector workers to strike.
We call for recognizing a union based on cards signed.
We call for the democratic control of all unions by their membership, and independent of employer domination and influence.
We support the right of all workers to engage in collective action and self-representation regardless of union status.
We support militant, united labor action including hot cargo agreements, and boycotts, factory committees, secondary and sympathy strikes, sit-down strikes, general strikes, and ultimately the expropriation of workplaces.
We support the right of workers to hold shop meetings on company premises, elect their immediate supervisors, and administer health and safety programs through the formation of shop councils.
We call for the repeal of the Hatch Act and the Taft-Hartley Act, the "hot cargo" provision of the Landrum-Griffin Act, and all so-called "right-to-work" laws.
We call for the same benefits for part-time workers as for full-time workers.
We call for increased health and safety regulation of business, and for increasing the size and enforcement power of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA).
We support the creation of a fund for workers which would pay a worker’s full wages and health insurance as well as necessary educational and/or retraining costs if that worker loses a job due to environmental transition, down-sizing, corporate dismantlement, or capital flight.

Socialist Party USA: 2012-2013 National Platform
EconomicsThe Socialist Party stands for a fundamental transformation of the economy, focusing on production for need not profit. So-called fair trade is meaningless as long as the world economy is dominated by a few massive corporations. Only a global transformation from capitalism to democratic socialism will provide the conditions for international peace, justice, and economic cooperation based on the large-scale transfer of resources and technology from the developed to the developing countries.
We demand the immediate withdrawal of the United States from the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) and the Central American Free Trade Agreement (CAFTA), and oppose the creation of a widened Free Trade Area of the Americas (FTAA).
We call for worker and community ownership and control of corporations within the framework of a decentralized and democratically determined economic plan.
We call for a minimum wage of $15 per hour, indexed to the cost of living.
We call for a full employment policy. We support the provision of a livable guaranteed annual income.
We call for all financial and insurance institutions to be socially owned and operated by a democratically-controlled national banking authority, which should include credit unions, mutual insurance cooperatives, and cooperative state banks. In the meantime, we call for re-regulation of the banking and insurance industries.
We call for a steeply graduated income tax and a steeply graduated estate tax, and a maximum income of no more than ten times the minimum. We oppose regressive taxes such as payroll tax, sales tax, and property taxes.
We call for the restoration of the capital gains tax and luxury tax on a progressive, graduated scale.
We call for compensation to communities-- and compensation, re-training, and other support service for workers-- affected by plant and military base closings as stop-gap measures until we reach our goal of creating a socialist society totally separate from the global capitalist economy.
We oppose the International Monetary Fund, the World Bank, and the World Trade Organization as instruments of capitalist oppression throughout the world.
We demand cancellation of Third World debt.
We call for a National Pension Authority to hold the assets of private pension funds, and a levy against corporate assets for any pension fund deficits.
We call for increased and expanded welfare assistance and increased and expanded unemployment compensation at 100% of a worker's previous income or the minimum wage, whichever is higher, for the full period of unemployment or re-training, whichever is longer.
We support a program of massive federal investment in both urban and rural areas for infrastructure reconstruction and economic development.
We support tax benefits for renters equal to those for homeowners.
We call for the elimination of subsidies and tax breaks that benefit corporations and all other forms of corporate welfare.
We oppose the court-created precedent of “corporate personhood” that illegitimately gives corporations rights that were intended for human beings - 11 months ago

Environment
We call for public ownership and democratic control of all our natural resources in order to conserve resources, preserve our wilderness areas, and restore environmental quality.
The U.S. must immediately return to participation in international agreements, such as the Kyoto Protocol, limiting carbon emissions, and accept a major role in worldwide efforts to control global warming.
We call for placing full financial responsibility on private companies for prevention and clean up of their own toxic wastes and for full compensation of workers and residents adversely affected by environmental hazards.
We oppose policies that target minority communities for placement of local landfills, toxic waste disposal sites, or incinerators.
We call for strong, enforceable endangered species protection that focuses on habitat-centered protection for plants and animals.
We oppose any new nuclear power projects and call for the rapid phasing out of all nuclear power plants, and a ban on the export of nuclear technology.
We support the recycling of glass, metals, plastic, paper, and chemicals and the use of recycled materials for public works projects such as roadways, parks, and playgrounds.
We call for shutting down waste incinerators and phasing out landfills and especially oppose targeting minority communities for hazardous waste disposal sites.
We oppose open-pit mining operations and support the reclamation of land used by mining operations at the company’s expense.
We support large-scale environmental restoration efforts.
Energy
The Socialist Party stands for municipal ownership and control of energy plants, in a non-profit and decentralized, but coordinated, system that ensures the most careful use of natural resources.
We call for the development of alternative energy sources including solar, geothermal, wind, hydropower, and biomass to end dependence on fossil fuels.
We call for a sliding-scale index which favors low-income people, to ensure that all people have access to utility services.
We call for mandatory vitrification (encapsulation) of all spent nuclear fuel, control rods and other waste.
We call for a ban on all imports of nuclear materials, whether they are vitrified or not. - 11 months ago

"a maximum income of no more than ten times the minimum." Unbelievable. So I should make a maximum of roughly $70 per hour even though I spent $200,000 going to college and law school. The same would be true, of course, for doctors and other professionals who have to spend a minimum of seven years in college to even qualify to take the examinations to practice their professions. Ridiculous.

In Sweden everyone can go to college without paying anything for the privilege -- I have a friend who is a doctor; he is taxed at 70% of what he makes. He has his main home; a summer cottage, and a 30-ft sailboat that he sails during the 6 weeks of vacation he gets every year. He has spent much time here in the US and has tried to get us to move to Sweden as we would get more there than we do here. Sweden is a social democracy.

At $70 an hour, in one year you will make roughly $140,000. So in 2 years, all your school debt could be paid off entirely. What's the problem?
