I wonder if some of this is an overexposure issue, sun overexposure that is. With the rise is skin cancer rates attributed to spending too much time in the sun it could, in part, be a response to that.

I doubt that's the reason just because frankly that might actually be a sane response and one thing americans are just plain not up to is sane responses to issues. More probably some kind of societal swing of the times. I seem to remember reading somewhere that in difficult times like these (financial) that clothing trends toward more "conservative". At this rate we'll see the burkas soon...

Hell yeah. Melanoma is so prevalent now. Kids in Austrailia all wear hats at recess
in school due to the intensity of the sun there. And here? I had a young friend, ex
co-worker, who used to jet ski. Her friend died of melanoma, but Stephanie con-
tinued her love of questionable 'jet skiing' w/o a ner' do care about even putting
sun-screen on first. Why her apatheic view that it wouldn't happen to her? Steph wuz an okay young
perp, but she also attended Marquette U here in Milwaukee, and in her junior
year there (Commerial Arts her major), she once asked what a Thesaurus was." I thought it was some kinda dinosaur or fish", was her response.
Marquette University isn't a trade school, it's well-reknowned better college.

This is a topic that is talked about at my house all the time during the Spring/Summer having a 16 year old Daughter. She wants a suit that is fashionable and we want one that is respectful. This is the style we settled on last year with a slightly longer bottom.

You might want to keep that daughter of yours locked up in a high tower until shes about 60.
( Or , trade her for 100 Arabian stallions and 2000 arable acres ; another "old school" option. )
But I would begin to work on those contingency plans,.....SHE is going to be a problem

coolplanet:
That is foolish. America began the 'body issues' with Twiggy from Britain back in the
60's. Suddenly, one had to have a bod that appeared to be that of a young boy.
A physical self that couldn't cast a shadow behind a toothpick.
Pharses such as: 'You can never be too rich or too thin', began to take hold.Anorexia and bulemia sprang from the American delirious bend toward 'skinny.'
People often die from the above two eating disorders.
Girls, boys, women and men in large numbers fell victim to these wrongful takes
on body image. It's still in effect and ruins lives. Add this to the list of addictions
in this country. Now it's 'sculpt your body.' OY ! Rhinoplastic surgeons
bilking kazillions out of people to self-elect and change their originally God-given
selves.
People thinking that if they lose weight, all their problems will magically 'go
away.' Dietary horror stories. Folk left in the dark about it's what's in the heart,
in the soul of a person, NOT their physical appearance, that matters.
No one is truly ever satisfied with their physical attributes they were born
with. But this one issue on 'the thinner the better' is an American blight.
Not that all people suffer from this miserable body image baloney, but the
tradegy of our time is that many of us are all so eye-besotted, never looking
beyond this dense dimension of material things, threads, and what-to-wear.
OCD's that can't break the outter shell. Never bothering to step on a spiritual
path. Not all, but many. As the Chinese say, "Enough is too much, and
too much is plenty."
To want to stay healthy is alright, to want to mirror an image of perfection
becomes dangerous.

Well said! and yes today it isn't just women who are under these pressures, every guy is supposed to be big, buff, and ripped! I've been watching some U.K t.v on Netflix and have noticed that their actors tend to look like real, regular people, where the equivalent men in american t.v. all look like Ken-dolls who spend every waking moment possible in some damn gym workin out. I remember just a couple years ago overhearing the teen son of a guy I did work for worrying about getting fat, it was ridiculous this kid probably didn't have 10 oz. of body-fat on him, yet he was worried. Very sad. And this was a completely ordinary kid, not any special issues that I'm aware of. His family not prone to over-weight at all, no a un-attractive guy or anything, ordinarily popular I believe, no legitimate reason to be worried, just this sad sick society.
