Sarah Palin Drinks Big Gulp During CPAC Speech: ‘Shoot, It’s Just Pop!’

By Igor Volsky on Mar 16, 2013 at 3:09 pm

During a dynamic and lively speech at the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) on Saturday, Sarah Palin poked fun at New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s campaign to reduce obesity by limiting the availability of large sugary drinks.

Halfway through her speech, while describing exchanging guns with her husband Todd for Christmas, the former Alaska governor pulled out a Big Gulp from behind the podium, smirked, took several sips, and remarked, “Oh Bloomberg is not around, our Big Gulp is safe! We’re cool. Shoot, it’s just pop!” The crowd erupted in applause.

The gag was funny, but the Big Gulp is more than just pop — increasing serving sizes are one of the causes of the nation’s obesity epidemic.

As portion sizes have spiraled out of control, soft drinks sizes have seen one of the largest increases, ballooning by over 50 percent since the mid-1970s, just as rates of obesity nearly tripled. The average American child now consumes approximately 270 calories from soft drinks each day and nationally U.S. children drink about 7 trillion calories from soda each year.

The obesity epidemic now accounts for 21 percent of national health care spending — costing the nation more than $160 billion every year — a figure that will continue to rise since 42 percent of Americans are projected to be obese by 2030.

And while Bloomberg’s ban won’t single-handedly slim down the nation, public health advocates believe that it will discourage people from consuming “excess quantities of sugar-sweetened beverages” and change “social norms and unhealthy behaviors.” Palin may not need that kind of persuasion — after finishing her speech, she left her Big Gulp behind.

    • She's such a whore. Her sexual joke, her tight clothing, appealing to "Joe six pack" I suppose? Funny how intelligent women who have something to say don't have to stoop to these types of shenanigans.

Yeah and instead of her we got Joe Biden with his idiocy. We could apply the sentence above to him merely by replacing the word "woman" with "man" and adding "an" before intelligent. We would have been better off with Sarah.

At least Joe's heart is in the right place. I don't agree with everything that comes out of his mouth- that's for sure but what is her track record? Bailing out of the AK Governorship to stop an investigation into her ethics violations? I think it's rather obvious she didn't want that to go forward and then she wrote her book and used her celebrity for personal gain. Pretty much the Republican way and people like you defend them.

Hey, maybe they'll lower your taxes next time. That's how we'll pay off the debt they racked-up by lying to get us into Iraq.

      Bravo.

    • Sarah Palin is the anti progressive. Obviously she is a threat to anti American Progressives and they are scared. She is a true American patriot. People like her made this country the greatest in the world. Too bad progressives are trying to destroy our great way of life and restrict freedom. Impeach Obama!

welcoming the brand new spammer/sock? Isn't that nice. The "person's" post is more of the same copy/paste that directly from Faux Noise, sure sounds like their tired old propaganda-bull.

That is an interesting thing to read. “Anti-American Progressive.” It would imply that things should never progress.

Can you tell us what changes the progressives are responsible for and how it would have been better left alone?

I could have sworn I heard some of you guys giving credit to the right for such progressive ideas as the equal rights movements of the 60s and 70s. These minority and women’s rights movements changed the laws and were by definition progress. I suppose you can give the credit for it to the right and thereby call conservatives the progressives, or you can blame the left for being progressives and making changes to the equal rights laws that should have never happened according to conservatism. The fact is the Equal Rights Amendment has never been ratified because (you guessed it) patriotic conservatives appose it. Patriotic American conservatives appose equal rights and are proud to say so.

Racial desegregation is a progressive thing. Is that one of the things that should have been left the way it was? After all, progression and change are Anti-American.

Here is a quote from the great voice of absolutism and conservatism Klemens von Metternich: “The first and greatest concern for the immense majority of every nation is the stability of the laws and their uninterrupted action, never there change.” That would seem to me to be a patriotic American sentiment to you guys, don’t you think?

"Obviously she is a threat to anti American Progressives and they are scared."

We're not so much scared, as we are annoyed. A mosquito doesn't really pose a threat in the United States, but people still react strongly to them because they are annoying and persistent.

"She is a true American patriot."

Indeed, and only a true American Patriot would put her responsibilities as an elected official on hold to run as Vice President for his or her party, then completely abandon those very same responsibilities when his or her presidential candidate lost the election.

Wait... no... those actions seem kinda opposite of a patriot, perhaps treasonous. Golly gee, I guess there is a reason why the majority of people in Alaska think Palin's a treasonous bitch of a politician, and here I thought that the general populous up here just hated her for no reason what-so-ever.

"People like her made this country the greatest in the world."

Though some of the things our founding fathers did were insanely hypocritical, I don't recall the founders of this nation being quite so ignorant of important issues of their respective day.

"Too bad progressives are trying to destroy our great way of life and restrict freedom."

Kinda odd how when a Conservative president, who was placed into office much like a king during the 2000 election, took measures which were much more restrictive to our freedoms and went much farther to destroy our way of life, a lot of Conservative people who consider themselves patriots stood with him... but now that it is a Liberal/Progressive, who is really more of a centrist, a lot of those Conservative people who consider themselves patriots have their proverbial panties in a bunch because a man who was ACTUALLY AND VERIFIABLY ELECTED to be President TWICE is labeled to be under an "opposing" political party.

By the way Mishie, good to see you back. It'll be fun to see how far you can go before you highjack another thread and have your account banned. Just out of curiosity, what name are you thinking of going with next when that happens? You've already used Rightthinking, and you won't be able to use Mishima after you step in it again... so any thoughts about your future choices?

    • Palin is a refreshing counter, and change, to the usual hate we receive from the left. Good job of pointing out the stupidity and control issues liberals have with other peoples lives.

Your wrong. What happened to Congreswomen Giffords was a tragedy...but Palin's comment "targeting" Giffords seat had nothing to do with the incident. Reports show Loughner was extreem left wing. I am not a big fan of Palin as a politician but your not begin honest here
