The author believes it is up to us girls to help to change the image of gamers and declares
" I am a girl and I love to play games where I blow people up, stave in their heads with a crowbar and even occasionally off a prostitute to steal back my in game money
Who is with me?"
The article employs large amounts of sarcasm, please be aware of that. Any accusations of misogyny or homophobia will be deemed amusing.

Actually off to play a bit of Uncharted before I continue with my writing for the day. Not loads of blowing shit up but tons of shooting.

Well it was meant as an ironic joke but maybe we need to start some sort of petition for us relatively normal gamers.
I am not worried about inviting them to the party I am worry about them getting a stopping order on us holding one :-)

As much as this article was meant to be ironic, the honest answer is; yes I think we do.
I think that anti games campaigners like Jack Thompson in USA and Michael Atkinson in oz exploit the image that a lot of people have of gamers as either children or adults with a warped outlook on life, to their advantage.
They make people believe that we are all slightly dodgy and hint that games have made us this way(watch out it could happen to your children too). It would be funny but blokes like Attorney General Atkinson have real power. He is pretty much single handedly blocking the introduction of an 18 rating in oz and games are being banned as a result.
This article was not a true call to arms but maybe we should have one. Maybe all the (relatively) normal, harmless, employed and in any other way, productive members of society who play games need to declare themselves.
Sorry rant over, you did ask :-)

I got RROD but sent it back to Microsoft and it's all good now :)
The crusade against games and gamers is the same line of bullshit they've given for every form of entertainment- books, television, music, movies, the internet, etc.
Much like comic books, some video games are simply not for children. Parents and the general public need to come to accept that.
If we're worried about violence in our society, we need only to look to the news where real people are being killed, raped, etc. The real world is more violent than any video game.

I do think that when people mention video games, they are thinking of men committing these "heinous" acts. But I don't think there's any way gamers can destroy their negatives images because the media ONLY focuses on the negatives and what do you expect from a company that cares more about ratings and getting people to watch their shows consistently than showing both sides of the story?

I'm a hardcore gamer. My daughter loves video games, and my wife plays occasionally too. I think if gamers are viewed in a negative way, it is only because of ignorance. Everybody is different.

Ha ha well thanks for your honesty.
It was actually meant to be a slightly amusing dig at the use of stereotypes by anti game campaigners.
I was being ironic by using the stereotypes.
Not to worry, not everyone is able to recognise irony very effectively. Don't feel bad.

This article is terrible. It fails to mention a single way girls would effectively change the image of gamers, and falls into the exact same stereotypes about gamers that it is trying to combat. As both a girl and a hardcore gamer, if I were to answer this "call to arms" I would be afraid of downgrading the public image of women rather than helping promote a positive image for gamers. I don't mean to be harsh, but a little content goes a long way.
