Square Enix Doesn't Consider Final Fantasy XIII a JRPG

Final Fantasy XIII is a Japanese-made game. It is also a role-playing-game. Yet, don't tell FFXIII producer Yoshinori Kitase that it's a JRPG

"There's a trend these days to strictly categorize games as western RPGs or Japanese RPGs, but Final Fantasy is something that we don't try to categorize as either/or," Kitase told new outlet EDGE. Understandable that the man doesn't want his game pigeonholed; however, it is Final Fantasy — a game for many that epitomizes JRPG.

"For us," Kitase added, "the game straddles genre."

    • To be honest I don't really see the point of classifying Final Fantasy into JRPG. If you really think about it then what would Kingdom Hearts be classified as? Kingdom Hearts has both Final Fantasy and Disney storyline fused.

The storyline of a game impacts its genre, but it does not push a game into one genre or another. Just because the storyline of Kingdom Hearts is fused from Western and Eastern sources does not negate the fact that Kingdom Hearts is one of the most prolific action/JRPGs around (I just made up this genre.).

Anyway, it is futile for Kitase-san or anyone else at Square-Enix to try and pretend that Final Fantasy XIII isn't a JRPG. It has all the features we've come to expect from JRPGs, especially JRPGs developed by Square-Enix, so I don't see the point of this attempt to change people's minds.
