The Weekly Stack -- July 10, 2009

Each week for the Weekly Stack, I upload a picture of my stack of games I've been playing this week. Want to join in? Reply with a picture of the FIVE games you've been playing (or wanting to play) the most this week. The stack should be in order from most-played at the top to least-played at the bottom (and if you didn't play five, just include games you wish you had gotten to on the bottom). Then tell us a little bit about your experience with the games!

We've had a bit of a break from the Weekly Stack while I've been moving, but we're back in gear! And even though it's a slow summer for new games, there's lot to catch up on, so check out what I've been playing and post a picture and words about your Stack below.

Red Faction: Guerrilla -- Once again, it was a video posted right here on Current that convinced me to buy Red Faction: Guerrilla (check it out below), and it was not a mistake. Some have called it "GTA on Mars," but the real genius of this open-world game is its focus on completely demolishing buildings. Since you're vastly outnumbered in the rebellion you're leading, you really need to use guerrilla tactics: get in, blow stuff up, and get out before the opposition gets too brutal. It makes for a frenetic, sometimes frustrating, and ultimately enjoyable experience. So far I've liberated three sectors, and I can't wait to clear the rest.

Star Ocean: First Departure -- I've been putting this off for a while, but I'm finally embarking on my epic journey to play through the full Star Ocean series of sci-fi JRPGs. This remake of the first game for the PSP starts slow but is building quickly. Right now I'm just over five hours in and have discovered the shocking twist (MINOR SPOILER WARNING) that the game doesn't just include space travel but also time travel! It's far from ground-breaking, but if you love Japanese RPGs, Star Ocean is a dependable series.

Fallout 3 -- Though the 360 version is pictured (borrowed from a friend), I'm actually playing a copy of Fallout 3 on PC that I bought super-cheap off of Steam last week. I played the game when it came out last year for review, but since that was on a debug system, I'm starting over now, and I'm loving it all over again. The only major complaint is that I desperately need some more tunes on the radio, but since I'm playing the PC version, some easy-to-find mods should make that simple to fix.

Halo 3 -- It's been a long time since I've broken out my copy of Halo 3 -- I like the Halo games just fine, but I'm not nearly as fanatical about the series as some 360 owners. This week, though, my buddy Jason and I hopped back into split-screen online multiplayer and started re-learning the ropes. The new map packs provided some challenges, especially figuring out the layouts and objectives of the new territories, but overall it was fun. Hopefully we'll keep it up and actually learn to not suck again.

Iron Man -- And fresh from GameFly, i've got...uh, Iron Man. I haven't heard great things about this Sega movie/comic book adaptation, but I guess I added it to my queue last year when I was still hyped on the movie and curious. I didn't get a chance to play it this week, but I'm going to try to check it out after finishing Red Faction. I don't have high hopes, but I've got at least give it a shot, right?

    • I had a little more than five games....crazy got a few of these via Goozex)!

UFC '09 Undisputed: This game actually made me interested in the actual sport. The game is a lot of fun and for a first year effort, plays great. Considering it's more than just boxing, this game seems as though it has a lot more versatility than the Fight Night series. Right now my fighter is 13-5 with 13 KO's.

Bionic Commando: The game got a lukewarm reception but after listening to the BC Podcast for a year and being intrigued by the game's swing mechanic I'm deciding to give the game a try. I've only played one level of it so far, but so far so good.

inFamous- I still have to beat it as inFamous and get one more non-mission based trophy (kill 25 enemies while on a moving train) before I've 100% the entire game.

BlazBlue- I love this game. It's so different from Street Fighter IV. Don't get me wrong, I love SFIV, but I like the fact that this plays differently in comparison. Each character plays completely different from one another and if you liked the Guilty Gear series, I don't see why you wouldn't like this. Not only that, but there is miraculously zero lag during online matches.

Persona 3- I've played this off and on and it's my de facto game to play while I listen to podcasts.

Red Faction- Forgot to tell Phil that I had fun playing this with him online while it lasted. We'll have to do that again.

Ghostbusters- I've already played the crap out of this, but the multiplayer is a blast so I'll continue to play that.

Prototype- Just got this from Goozex and have yet to play it.

Tell me about it! UFC, Prototype, and Bionic Commando all came via Goozex in the same week which was a weird coincidence.

I was just going to play some inFamous and BlazBlue this week, but my 360 came back from MS sooner than I expected.

Ouch, nothing like that at all in the U.K.? I know Canada has a similar service. That sucks, Gazimoff, sorry to hear it.

If it's any consolation, GameFly is really nice but far from perfect. Shipping times can be verrrry long sometimes.

    • Resident Evil 5 - PS3
Recently started this controversial outing in the survival horror series and I'm loving it co-op and single player.

Knights of the Old Republic - Xbox
Picked this great RPG up from a garage sale this week and have been blown away by this classic Star Wars game.

      Trash Panic - PSN
Been going back sporadically to this great downloadable game and finally reached level 4.

Beyond Good and Evil - Xbox
So technically I'm not playing this yet but it's on its way from Gamefly. Hope it lives up the hype.

Shadow of the Colossus - PS2
In my off time and before bed I'm going back and finally beating this fantastic game.

    • My stack's still featuring World of Warcraft - I've fallen in with a raiding guild and it's currently chewing through a lot of my time. Patch 3.2 is eagerly anticipated as much for the changes it'll bring as for the new content that's being released. For me, it's still a great game that I'm getting a lot of fun out of, although I'm keenly watching a couple of other MMOs on the horizon to see if they'll offer me anything new.

I tried to find my old Age of Conan box, as I recently reactivated my account their under the 14-day re-trial promotion. I initially had high hopes for this - the email promised that the game had gone through "radical changes" and was now brimming with content. After I'd spent a day downloading the client (couldn't find the box in the end) and logged back in, I can only say I was disappointed. Although there do seem to be more quests and the game engine does perform slightly better, the interface is still clunky and frustrating at the best of times. Ultimately, I don't think I'll be going back to being a paid subscriber.

Rhythm Paradise/Rhythm Heaven is about the only game my DS is used for at the moment. I was expecting it to be a flash in the pan, but as rhythm games go it's surprisingly good. I have found that it's best played while stationary - it doesn't play too well while I'm on a bumpy train commuting in to work.

Wipeout Pure was my nostalgia trip last week - I used to play an old version on the PC and was blown away by how good it was. If I was ever to shell out for a PS3, this game would be one of my must-haves because of the sheer style the series encapsulates. Alas I only have an Xbox 360, so I'll be stuck with PGR4 and while the original Metropolis Street Racer on the Dreamcast was great, I'm not sure I like where the PGR series is heading.

Guitar Hero: Metallica is something I really, really want to find the time to play. The keen eyed among you will see it's still wrapped in cellophane and unused, as I just haven't found the time to just spend three hours in front of the TV and get a quality session in.

The only thing missing from the picture is the iPhone I used to take it with. I've been playing Firemint's Real Racing (very impressive and really shows off what the device is capable of), Eliss (great indie arthouse game) and StarDefense (interesting take on the Tower Defense genre). I'm finding myself playing games on the iPhone more and more these days, partly because they're so cheap that I can afford to pick up a new one every week or so, and partly because I always have the device with me so I can always sneak in 10 minutes of gaming if I find myself with some time.
