Attack of the Killer Tomatoes. Laugh if you will but there is a scene in an office where, in order to enter, the person on your side of the desk has to get up and walk out. I had that exact office some years ago.

Bladerunner.
An incredible script, fueled with Phillip K. Dick paranoia, Syd Mead's industrial design, Ridley Scott's vision, Vangelis' music, spot on performances. Not just great science fiction, but a great movie. One that will be studied as long as we make film.Akira
Funny thing, Neo-Tokyo in Akira and Los Angeles in Bladerunner are stylistic cousins. Sleek, beautiful, oppressive architecture abounds. Japanese cyberpunk. Every post apocalyptic anime set in a megalopolis is an echo of AkiraThe Day the Earth Stood Still
Simply, because Robert Wise can do no wrong.Forbidden Planet
Because monsters from the Id haunt us still. - 4 years ago

actually i'm totally serious about Independence Day, for these reasons: 1) The aliens looked killer 2) Bill Pullman's speech was inspiring of Global Unity 3) the special FX of spaceships rumbling through Earth's atmospheric clouds was incredible. 4) They blew up the White House! yea baby!

Near a gray and unnamed city is the Zone, an alien place guarded by barbed wire and soldiers. Over his wife's numerous objections, a man rises in the dead of night: he's a stalker, one of a handful who have the mental gifts (and who risk imprisonment) to lead people into the Zone to the Room, a place where one's secret hopes come true. That night, he takes two people into the Zone: a popular writer who is burned out, cynical, and questioning his genius; and a quiet scientist more concerned about his knapsack than the journey. In the deserted Zone, the approach to the Room must be indirect. As they draw near, the rules seem to change and the stalker faces a crisis.

Simply the tightest anime movie ever ... and definitely near the tops in the sci-fi genre as well.

Blade Runner. No question. It was made in the early '80s and STILL feels wa more futuristic than most sci-fi movies made today. Nothing made since has come close. (Although "Children of Men" was fantastic, and evoked some of Blade Runner's grim coolness, it doesn't have the same robot weirdness going for it. Requisite for any true sci-fi champ.)
