Charlton Heston, who won the 1959 best actor Oscar as the chariot-racing "Ben-Hur" and portrayed Moses, Michelangelo, El Cid and other heroic figures in movie epics of the '50s and '60s, has died. He was 84.

Heston spokesman Bill Powers says the actor died Saturday night at his home in Beverly Hills with his wife Lydia was at his side.

Heston revealed in 2002 that he had symptoms consistent with Alzheimer's disease, saying, "I must reconcile courage and surrender in equal measure."

RIP Charlton Heston.

    • Yes, people kill people, but don't guns make it a whole lot easier?
Without them I doubt so much carnage and death would be part of our lives.

The fact that humans aren't meant to eat meat means that guns shouldn't even exist for hunting either in my opinion.

Charlton Heston supported something terrible and for that, he does not have my respect.

    • I adored Charlton Heston. Actually had the hots for him for a few years. He was a great actor and, even if you didn't like what he stood for in life, at least he stood up for what he believed in until the end. No one could call him wishy-washy. I agree - guns don't kill people - people kill people. People are capable of being responsible gun owners. I also hate to think that is all people remember him by - the NRA. He was a brillant actor and gave us all wonderful movies that will be viewed down through the years. I was very saddened by his passing.

    • "From my cold dead hands" - i bet they're pretty cold now. Head of the NRA i believe, did a pro gun rally in Columbine a week or so after those kids shot the school up. real nice guy.

    • My condolences to his family. His personal politics aside, I don't regard him as a great actor. He had a very limited range, it always seemed to be Heston Vs. Monkeys, or Heston Vs. Albino Mutants, or Heston Vs. An Earthquake, IMHO.

    • Yeah Heston seemed like a huge advocate of weapons that are built only to cause death, so WELCOME TO IT OLD MAN!

(Hey, don't get your panties in a bunch folks, we're all going to die some day... it's not a big deal).

Also, advocation of violent weapons (that YES, ARE MEANT FOR KILLING) and then saying he's against abortion...

What an oxymoron, what a hypocrite.

    • Seriously, what's up with bashing Heston? He was an amazing person. Those accusing him of advocating violence are wrong. Guns don't cause violence, people do. As far as giving guns away to kids, I'm not familiar with that. What age kids?? 16 is considered an adult in some countries. He was anti-abortion, and I can't blame him for that so what.

    • "Acting legend?" I can't believe everyone's talking about how great they think this guy was. Heston wanted to give guns to kids and take away the rights of women to decide what happens to their own bodies. He was an awful person. "A true man's man," all right.

    • Yeah i agree he's a film legend, the last scene of Planet of the Apes will stay with me to my own grave. However i just wish he had put all his glory to good use instead of promoting firearms. What a waste ... may he rest in peace.

    • Such a loss...
Another of the "old greats" gone. Pretty soon all we'll have left are these plastic, vapid no-talents of the modern stage, screen, and film. Sigh.

    • Charlton Heston was a true man's man. Rugged, tough, larger than life. A proud advocate of the 2nd Amendment. While people decide the next presidential failure, I am proud to say that my president, though fallen, will live forever in my memories.

This actually happened to me when hiking and a tree got struck by lightening above my head. And Yes, we ate soylant green after hiking all day and sleeping in the mountain top, then we ate each other, but I was too chewey, so I came back cause I had to poo poo, haaa, sorry, Heston was a great person and dignified actor, + protest Blockbuster cause they dont have the Ten Commandments.
