David Goyer says he knows the theme for 'Batman 3'

Whether you agree or not, judging from both fan reaction and near universal critical acclaim, “The Dark Knight” will almost certainly go down as the greatest comic book movie of all-time, with a performance from Heath Ledger that is being hailed as one of the greatest on-screen villains ever.

Now all Christopher Nolan, his brother Jonathan, David Goyer, and an as yet unnamed villain have to do is top it.

“I think that’s the scariest thing – to think, could we come up with a third movie that was as good as the first two? Can we top ourselves?” screenwriter David Goyer asked aloud, almost rhetorically, in a recent conversation with MTV News. “Doing it a third time would be a big proposition.”

Make no mistake about it, though, a third film HAS been discussed, Goyer confessed, revealing that, while nothing is concrete, both a villain and a theme have been bandied about.

“We’ve only talked loosely about it, though, Chris and I,” Goyer said.

Interestingly, it’s the theme, and not the villain, that most interests me, especially given how the latter seems inexorably tied to the former in this new modern Batman universe. (Fear the predominant issue in “Begins” precipitating the introduction of Scarecrow, escalation in “Knight” similarly calling for The Joker.

The fact that Goyer has a theme he wants to keep in mind for a possible “Batman 3″ means he also has a direction, a crisis, and, yes, a villain.

So what is it?

“I have one,” Goyer said laughing. “But I’m not going to tell you. Chris is very particular about that.

“I do think, though, that if there’s not a third film – these two movies stand on their own,” he added. “I think it could go either way.”

Not us. We want a “Batman 3.” So we’ll throw it out to you: Now that you’ve seen “The Dark Knight,” now that you know how it ends, what could be the theme of “Batman 3″? Who could be the villain to fit that theme? Sound off below.

    • because Harvey Dent locked up the mob, it leaves a spot for others to come in and take control of Gotham. I'm thinking the Irish mafia led by the riddler (red hair and wears green, think about it).

    • as long as david goyer has a hand in writing only it will be a great sequel with chris nolan and bale attached to it. david goyer is the butcher.. he butchered the blade series with the final booty fart fest including the nighting gale stalkers (lol) and then made a piece of cow pee and dooky such as the invisible. i hope he realizes that maybe he is just a better writer than a director. he can get better but leave your paws off of franchises and start your own.

    • Nolan has already said that he didn't think he would be able to do a realistic Penguin and Catwoman.....I think that was his way of saying that he didn't want to.......I think the best villians in the Batman Universe to use would be The Riddler, Bane, Poison Ivy, Firefly, Mad Hatter, Ventriloquist and Mr. Scarface...or some of the more unknown charecters. The first 3 would be the best to carry a film. Take the Riddler, get rid of the goofy green question mark spandex and just make him a computer hacker would be great. Maybe have a relative unknown play him like Chris Hardwick. Bane could be a merc trying to take out the Batman played by Nathan Jones. Poison Ivy would be just your typical eco-terrorist. They really need to wrap this film up with a third one though. I think if the series goes on to a forth we are going to see the same disaster that happened in the 90's. Also, I don't see how they would replace Ledger but I do really want to see Harley Quinn so if they do replace him, James Franco is the only guy I can think of who has a chance of doing it.

great idea, bane is a great character.. (not the bane from the joel shucrapper movie but the comic).. that should be a 4th film synopsis if they get to part 4. bane is a great story line and if that were to end the series it would be spectacular.

Not true, i couldn't care less.

Now you're up on TV with this piece of promotional garbage, as if a potential next Batman movie is one of the four most important things we should worry about right now.

    • IF they are going to base the movie around Batman vs another villain it should be CATWOMAN! His "love interest" died in this last movie and if there is another villain that comes psycologically close to Batman in a way that the Joker did but is easy to distinguish, it's her! But ditch the Catwoman seen in the Catwoman movie- that movie SUCKED.

    • I think the next character should be a thinker and sinical person. Johnny Depp would be great, of course I have to admit its hard to determine who can act what. Afterall I had no idea Ledger could act like he acted.

I think adding an insane guy too much like the joker will be a bit of a bad idea buty still create a character that has... issues...just different issues.

    • How is this a non-story? Isn't entertainment important too? It's nice to see that comics have risen to this level of importance.
Batman Vs Joker and even Batman Vs Superman are classic stories- comic books become like mythology, told in different ways by different people with values and questions that humans still ponder. Some comic books and movies are just as important as the classic literature we study in school, they bring fundamental pieces of humanity to light and inspire us.

    • I think an Arkham escape is a great idea! We know the Joker and scarecrow are still alive. And we can assume Two-Face was whisked off to Arkham. Thats three villians right there. Then add Harley Quinn helping the Joker hide / cause chaos.
Also, we can introduce batgirl. Since Barbara Gordon was shown in Dark Knight (as a little girl).

    • I think predation would be a good theme for the next film. Its hard to imagine a darker place the series could go form here so it must be dramatic. Perhaps examine the relationship of villian and hero, criminal and victim. The joker was an anarchoterrorist, the next villain should be a predator. Should be someone feral even, like a catwoman or perhaps an arsonist like dragonfly.

I also think that a batman vs. superman could be in the works. Also why not introduce a new hero in the storyline briefly, a marvelesque spin for a Justice League film. Perhaps a Black Canary? I like the idea of an expectant double cross. Her charachter was a mob inflitrator, and in many ways was the reverse of batman, an overt hero who worked without a mask, with the apearance of a villain, and who used the apearance of weakness to lull her oponents into a false sense of security, fought them with overconfidence rather than fear. I think that could be an interesting counterpoint and I think that her charachter would be more befitting a down to earth Justice Leage that could be set in the Nolan universe.

That's just it, it wasn't good enough to do justice to the new DC films that are coming out, ala watchman and Dark Knight, or the Superman film form Brian Singer which was also well done. The film only had 90million to work with a short productions chedule and wasn't helmed by Nolan or Singer or any variation thereof. It has since been confirmed that Wonder Woman will be created by Singer and that there are plans for a second Superman film from singer as well. I think that if Nolan is also to contine along this path that there should be a concerted effort for a modicum of continuity to the films. I liked that Gotham was mentioned in the last Superman film and have enjoyed the latest Marvel efforts at providing a living breathing universe on screen with continuity amongst thier self produced films.

    • ocanada:

That's just it. I am not a fanboy of DC but I have always enjoyed the fact that there was a certain continuity to the universe. Gotham and Metropolis aren't real world Localles and have as differing styles as Nolan and Singer. The same as a Los Angeles or New York are different than a Chicago as Gotham and I understand that. Superman has never been a compelling hero to me, they had him blow out a sun in the comics. I find his stories for the most part to be the greatest of comic book cheese, but its also deeply empathetical charachter as portrayed in the Singer films. I would agree that we would have to be compromise on both ends if a Justice League film were created. However with the emergence of a Wonder Woman film scheduled to battle a Marvel Thor its hard to not see perhaps a healthy rivalry between the two old comic factions. I was suggesting that more than the idea itself. Its wonderful to see the Watchman and Dark Knight shape into such dark masterpieces when for many years Marvel held the marquee for serious stories and DC was the campy number two. I think rivalry promotes better storytelling by raising the benchmark for what these films can be. As Iron Man and the Dark Knight have done and as I hope Thor, Wonder Woman, and Watchmen do as well.

Marvel has planned two films to lead up to the Avengers plot, Captain America: The first Avenger, and Iron Man II. Those films will adress the idea of the Avengers in a much more direct fashion than Iron Man/Hulk already have and as Thor will. I was only suggesting that a third film could draw upon plot points form the rest of the DC universe as the Joker and Two Face have been the most well known of Batman's enemies and with a Superman and Wonder Woman in the works it seems like a good time to grow the mythos into a further living breathing entity. I think it would add a great deal of strenght to the other two films to have a small sense of continuity as is building in the Marvel universe.

    • hey this may be a non story, but the world is depressing as it is. It's just good fun when people can pause for a minute and come together to enjoy a film or any kind of entertainment, and this movie did that for a lot of people, I know I loved it, and i'm not even much of a batman fan.

Ha, actually I was indeed one of those vans who thought Venom should be in the 3rd one- but the problem in that movie wasn't Venom, it was the LACK of Venom! He was barely in it! Sandman looked awesome too though, but otherwise the movie was iffy at best.

    • I have one word.....BANE.

They tried to pass him off as a second rate cronnie in a previous batman movie but in the cartoon he was one of batman's most formidable foes. Him and killer croc and the joker were the only ones tough enough and skilled enough to go head-to-head with the bat...

They could set it up as they whole city is against batman, and some of the police and the mobs join forces to call in a specialist from overseas...then bring in bane...

Im still trying to find a way to work in killer croc though...

if they went with the Bane angle they could do the whole evil batman who replaces bruce while he goes to retrain and then have a batman vs batman vs bane thing

      appealing to me

    • I've heard a lot of calls for Harley Quinn - calls I joyously second - but introducing Harley without the Joker makes little to no sense, and the last thing I want to see is a half-assed Joker after Heath's performance.

I definitely want Catwoman, and the Riddler. And not Jim Carey this time.

they could bring in depp as the joker, which was the original plan before they decided to just use what they had. You have to admit, hes the only one who could come close..and I second that as well, but jim carey was awesome as the riddler, I dont think they should redo him..

      @Elevator
but he's dead, and bringing him back would be too cliche. either way, he doesn't fit anymore. The first two films had a pattern. Each film had an overall theme, a big bad guy and a secondary bad guy that the big one uses. The secondary one was always relevant to the theme.

      First movie:
      Theme - Fear
Bad Guy - Raz Al Ghul
Second Baddie - Scarecrow (relevant to fear)

      Second movie:
      Theme - Good vs evil
      Bad Guy - Joker
Second baddie - Two Face (the embodiment of good vs evil)

To me, it only makes sense that the new movie will have to have something new for all of those aspects.

It has NOT been confirmed that Two-face is dead. He fell off the building. We know Rachel Dawes is dead because she was in the middle of an explosion. No one ever stated whether Two-face is dead, that is, that he had not survived the fall. I agree with Elevator

    • At the end of The Dark Knight. Batman must be a symbol of corrupted power, even though the absolute opposite is true.

The third could be about misrepresentation. A leader must step in to lead the "Bat Hunt". They would discover his identity, and use it to manipulate him, into strengthening the case that Batman is a bad guy. Allowing the true criminal to run Gotham as their own private playground.

    • I'd love to see Catwoman, and if they did another Joker story line I'd want to see a badass version of Harley Quinn...

but my buddy and I were talking about the possibility of a Batman v Superman movie with another villain (or a few from each!) in it. Batman v Superman has been hinted at for a long time and has comic book nerds drooling at the thought of it- Frank Miller (who originally wrote thekickass, Dark Knight series in the comics) did Batman Vs Superman in "The Dark Knight Falls" (it's awesome and Batman has kryptonite gloves) ... Since the movie left the next villian as BATMAN himself, it's the perfect lead in to get Superman in town, hunting him. (Think of all the crazy tech Batman has that could be a threat to National Security- Government gets Superman to help them, etc)

There would probably be another villan to supplement it, or they could do a few from both comics. There is a billboard in the movie "I Am Legend" of a Batman logo with a Superman logo inside it, like a poster for a Batman vs Superman movie, which a lot of nerds took as a secret hint that it's coming.

no, first of all superman sucks, second of all you cant just mash up the two, the batman world doesn't include super powers, that would be lame. Second, batman isnt the villain at all, the public was misinformed and blames him for something he tried to prevent, a staple of any superhero story. again, superman sucks.

Kudo's to you sir...........anyway.....yeah, I hate comic book crossovers.....besides, thats what Marvel does.......hence they remade Hulk, made Iron Man (amazing by the way), and are now working on Thor and Captain America just so they can have the Avengers. Crossovers is what you do when you are in trouble and are in desperate need of funds.......not when you have a good franchise going. I did see that shot in I Am Legend though......that made me depressed about the future most of all.

oh thats right, justice league...eh, well I really like the direction that they've taken the franchise, which is so good because they took this concept and tried to make it work in a real world scenario, you know, the jokers not just some goof bad guy, but an actual psychopath. Super powers and over the top anything just wouldnt go well with this awesome new premice (premise? premiss? eh..)

      Trio:
      Harley Quinn
      Poison Ivy
      Catwoman

Three women who come into town as a team that all fall for Bruce Wayne and he gets pulled into their cat and mouse game while fighting off their jealous and innate womanly motives.

With one turning to the side of good...of course...mere seconds before the destruction of Batman because a few choice words from him.
