Johnny Depp to play The Riddler in Dark Knight sequel?

Image
LindseyIndigo
Heath Ledger's performance as The Joker has set the bar high for Gotham City villains, but reports in the US say studio bosses have set their sights on Depp as The Riddler and Philip Seymour Hoffman as The Penguin.

Plans for the sequel are yet to be announced but it is likely to star Christian Bale reprising his role as The Caped Crusader.

The Dark Knight has smashed box office records in the US, taking $314 million in just 10 days.

There is even talk of it challenging Titanic to become the biggest movie of all time. Titanic took $600 million in the US. The Dark Knight certainly looks set to reach second place in the all-time chart and beat Star Wars, which made $460 million.

What do you think? Are Johnny Depp and Philip Seymour Hoffman your ideal Batman villians? If not, who is? And can comic book adaptation movies really produce Oscar-worthy performances?

    • Johnny Depp has made a LOT of movies and most of them are really good. Yes, Willy Wonka was creepy but typically his characters are great. Don't judge an actor on one film. I am sure that he could add a lot of intensity to the next Batman movie.

    • I'm suprised that 'The dark knight' is doing so well. I thought that Heath Ledger was amazing however the film was very confusing and i thought that it could have been alot better in many places. I'm sure Depp will be great, I just hope the film is less confusing

    • Killer Croc would be awesome.

Ridder maybe, but I' like to see something new, something we can't compare with the previous films.

How about a few hints to Metropolis and Star City, maybe even Central City.

    • If Nolan wants the villain(s) of his next movie to be guided by a peculiar/intricate ethos such as his previous villains all have, then the Riddler is an obvious and great choice.

Depp is definitely a possibility, and under Nolan's guidance may even do the role justice. But seeing as the actors in the movies so far really haven't been any of the most obvious or biggest names, I wouldn't be surprised if Nolan decided to choose a more unlikely actor who could possibly do even better than Depp.

Then again after the Joker there's lots of pressure to produce a performance that will be on par with or even top (impossible!) Ledger's portrayal.
All I know is that it's truly a shame Heath can't return for his role again.

    • omg...cant wait for the next Batman flick, Ledgers performance as the Joker blew me away. I think Depp has an amazing style of acting too that alows him to play almost any role so I certainly think he can do the Riddler justice.

but dear God, do not, I repeat DO NOT bring back penguin...Devito ruined it for me....

    • NOT, under ANY circumstances, a Penguin. The end.

But Depp as the Riddler... I dunno. I LOVE him as an actor, but the Riddler's only a few steps away from the Penguin level of ridiculousness every time I've seen him....

    • Johnny depp as the riddler...GREAT choice in actors. In my mind, the character of the riddler IS Jim Carey, but if you read the comics and watch even the older cartoons, you will realize that the wackiness that Carey is so known for was entirely out of place for the riddler. Jim carey's portrayal was more like a wacky Joker, and didnt show the straight-laced, contemplative nature that the riddler is really supposed to embody. If Depp gets the role, all he needs to do is become Willy Wonka again, and tweak it only slightly. As to the penguin, catwoman, scarecrow, and all the other villains that made cameo's in the batman movies previous to the dark night, who's to say who should accompany the riddler as batman's other arch nemesis. I think the riddler may be fine alone since his character is reclusive, and assuming that depp pulls it off, they may need no other villain. Lets hope he can pull it off.

    • Why!Why!Why!Why! Can't Hollywood just stop.

Enough is enough! We need to demand better films and not just be content with what the factory line is producing. It only cause there is nothing else good on do these films becum successful.

    • Depp would be great! Then we could all hope that when its done he OD's just like that brokeback guy.

And before you all say it yes I know his name .... he's just too insignificant for me to bother using it.

    • Depp and Hoffman are amazing actors, and the only two I can think of who can top Heath Ledger's Joker. Hopefully this is for real, it is totally possible to make another Batman as great as the Dark Knight is.

    • I loved the Riddler as a kid and would love to see him in a Nolan film, but not by Depp. Honestly I am kind of tired of seeing Depp and besides that I really do not think he could pull off the character very well. However David Tennant (Doctor Who) has expressed interest and i could really see him doing the role extremely well.

    • It's stories like this, along with the last FOUR Batfilms, that make me wanna punch Warner Brothers and DC in the greenlit face. Johnny Depp? He used to be good (pre-Pirates), but he wouldn't fit. Besides, do you know how many villians haven't been used yet? Manbat, Killer Croc, Mad Hatter, Clayface(s), Harley Quinn, The Creeper, Hush, a true Bane, Talia, Nyssa, Ventrilloquist/Scarface, Firefly, et cetera. Stop the redux. And give the duties to Guillermo del Toro, so he can do Manbat and Croc. Or Burton again, with Mad Hatter.
And stop saying Batman is realistic, or should be. Not even close. Bruce is realistic, not much else is.
Here I go again, yet another Bat rant.

      Hollywood has broken Batman's back.

    • I think its a shame that the Joker character will be lost, Johnny Depp is the master at interesting impersonations with his acting, I'm sure he could work out a passable joker.

I'm not so sure about the penguin being in this film, these films have been lacking strong female characters, Talia Al Ghul or Catwoman are needed desperately. I hope Christopher Nolan will direct too.

    • i think the riddler, especially with his outfit, is too comic-booky for the feel of these new movies...

johnny depp i dont think is a good villan...good character...but not bad man characters...

i dont particularly like the penguin, again, too cartoony for the feel of the new films, but hoffman i can see as that character anyways...

the mad hatter sounds like a good idea...

...but personally....I believe in Harvey Dent

    • MissAmanda:

i think that it will be 2 face and another character.
and you never know, the cartoony thing could be changed to fit the films. Look at The Joker in the cartoons/old batmans, some subtle changes and all is good. Scarecrow is VERY cartoony in the cartoons/comics but in Batman Begins, some subtle changes and it works. 2 face has been played quite cartoony in Batman Forever. With The Riddler if they put him in a green suit (dark green maybe) and bowler rather than lycra it could work. Penguin is just a deformed rich guy too. That could be work.
The only ones they have to shy away from are things like Mr Freeze, Poison Ivy possibly (as in some portrayals she can somehow just control plants with her mind), Man Bat, Killer Croc, Clayface (if the shapeshifting one and not the original who was a crazy ex-horror movie actor with a mask), and other clearly superhuman types with ridiculous comic book stories.

    • MissAmanda:

      Spoilers...

Two-Face died in "The Dark Knight" already. Anyway, after I saw it, I thought that the only A-list male villain that can fit with Nolan's Batman was the Riddler. He can be made just as demented and homicidal as the Joker. The Penguin in my mind is way too campy, but if Burton could do it, so can Nolan.

Bruce Wayne's rich because his family own a very big business and after they were killed he inherited it. Wayne Mansion has meant to be in his family for generations.
Oh and he has all the gadgets because his/his parents company develops/developed (?) weapons for the military.
I think it is much more likely than Superman (an alien who looks perfectly human) or Xmen (mutants who aren't just disabled but have all kinds of wonderful powers), or Spiderman (bitten by a radioactive spider... seriously!!??). This is coming from someone who loves Xmen and Spiderman.

ps. Joker isn't going to be in it for definite as Heath Ledger is dead (where have you been!!!???)

    • steadward:

as it's part 2 in a series, if you had watched the first one (batman begins), the back story is explained.

      Some other points:
      (1) a hero can be a normal man. an action hero in an action movie does not need any superpowers and can simply use guns and gadgets. Batman has always only used gadgets and the martial arts skills he has learned (see batman begins).

      (2) you could say the fact he doesn't seem much of a hero is part of what the whole Batman thing is about. He is possibly just crazy, he is possibly no different from the insane criminals he fights, etc.

Although it's supposed to be more gritty and realistic than previous Batman films/cartoons/comics/tv, it is still a film and still a story, and so still requires some removal from true reality. NO film is 100% realistic.

sorry if i sound all agitated... i'm not and i do not intend to come across that way. i just like a good debate.... and am a bit of a self-confessed geek and so like crap like Batman

    • Nolan can give it a try, I think Depp would be a good Riddler, but perhaps not dark enough to suit the tones of the movies?
Depp always reminds me of dark in a childlike way-what with all his work with Tim Burton- I cannot imagine him pulling off a totally serious role intended for a more adult audience.

I'll just pray for a sequel that doesnt ruin it all.
I just saw Dark Knight yesterday. And I really do not think it can be topped.

    • i personally have never liked The Riddler. Then again I never really liked Scarecrow, but the one in Batman Begins was ace. So maybe The Riddler could be done well. It'd still be nice to see someone who hasn't been done before in the movies though.

    • personally i think Depp could play the Mad Hatter quite well. More likely choice if they're gonna go for ones that haven't previously been used in the films.
Scarface (and the ventriloquist) could be an option.
Both these 2 characters fit with the kinda just crazy villains rather than some of the more comic book ones.

What with the Joker not being able to be brought back maybe they could bring in Harley Quinn!? Probably my favourite character.

No Catwoman and no Poision Ivy. This is a shame.

Harley Quinn from Batman: The Animated series. Put to High Voltage by Electric Six (i liked that song when it came out, then it got so overplayed and i hated it). But ANYWAY.... the song is irrelevant... it's just to give you an idea how great she'd be.

I think Ledger's Joker should remain untouched. Introduce Harley Quinn as the Joker's advocate with him in the background. Yah.

I hated what Hollywood did with the first time around with Batman...although I thought Jack Nicholson did give a good performance.

PSH and Depp will be excellent choices so long as the execs produce a decent script for them to work with.

Baddies like the Joker and Riddler are totally believable, and I think Depp would bring something new like Ledger did with the Joker.
