Cinema bans popcorn, deemed too chavvy

Yep, that stable snack of cinemas across the globe is under threat, well in three chains of a London cinema anyway.

Everyman cinema in London's Hampstead who are known for 'showing arty films' have reportedly vowed its 17 new venues will be "popcorn free".

Apparently, "There is no way it [popcorn] fits with the culturally sophisticated brand I wish to sell."

Don't arty types like popcorn then?

    • I love films and I really enjoy going to the cinema to watch them. Ok, I'm not completely happy by it but I can understand. Popcorn is loud (more so if the sound system isn't very good) and messy (you always seem to find chunks of the stuff in the strangest places when the film ends). But if we're getting onto point on noisy what about drinks (especially those people who try and drink every last drop of coke), or crisps, sweets, and hot foods.
However possibly the worst thing for noise are other patrons. There have been countless films that have been ruined by other people talking, sneaking in snacks and bottles of coke. They should put in rules for a 3 strike system for the patrons, you make to much noise, you ruin the film for other people as you turn to you mate and in a loud voice say "Oh this bit is so cool, this is where the boss's wife trips him up and he slices the girl's arm off by accident" Thanks you toothless wonder, I'm enjoying this film so shut the fuck up.
Oh and if anyone is interested, the scene referred to is from a proper film, a Japanese film called "The Machine Girl" (2008).

    • It's a good idea. The Picturehouse chain say that people don't like the noise and mess it causes, and I agree.

It's not a class thing, it's a STOP EATING THAT NOISY FOOD I'M TRYING TO WATCH A FILM thing.

    • Popcorn or 'Popping corn' dates back to the late 15th century. It's traditional art deco carts with neon lights or colossal basins in concrete Multiplex' are party of every screen in the world. As Ben mentions, banning it is a pretentious choice.

Shouldn't Mr Broch be a little more cautious with his use of words?

    • What a bunch of crap! Are they going to serve caviar and fois gras instead? And how is popcorn chavvy? I bet what the real reason for banning popcorn is that the cinemas can't charge £10 for a bucket to go with their £15 ticket price. That's rubbish. I'm glad that's not happening in my local cinema. I'd protest.

    • LOL! When I saw "cinema bans popcorn", I honestly thought it was going to be another health story about how fatty popcorn is- I was surprised by this! But check THIS out:

"A spokesman for Picturehouse cinema chain say their customers have demanded the change: "Lots of people absolutely hate it.""

    • Whoever invented the idea of eating popcorn in the movies was silly anyway. Popcorn is the loudest, easiest-to-drop food, and it has no flavor unless it's eaten in handfuls.

    • So popcorn is for the tacky? Is that what they're saying? Are soups and salads more appropriate? I don't care for popcorn but that's just silly.
