Newman finished chemotherapy treatment for cancer in August and it was widely reported in the US that he had only weeks to live.
In June this year, a neighbour and business partner said the actor told him about the disease the previous year.
In May, Newman pulled out of directing John Steinbeck's Of Mice and Men for unspecified health reasons.
The actor's representative Toni Howard had previously dismissed the cancer claims as simply "not true".
Newman retired from acting in 2006 after a 50-year career that included Butch Cassidy And The Sundance Kid (1969), The Sting (1971), The Hustler (1961), Hud (1963) and Cool Hand Luke (1967).
Newman was nominated for 10 Oscars, winning best actor for his role in The Color Of Money in 1986.

I went to a funeral today for someone that lost her son on Wednesday. He called her on Tuesday asking where she was because he was coming over to mow her lawn. Then later that night he was taken to the hospital by a friend because of seizures and then the next day in the morning his heart stopped.
He was 33.
Paul Newman was 83. Fifty more years. He lived a full life that was littered with positive things...such as wife and kids and a great career as well as great causes.
The sadness for his death is reasonable for all but one should be amazed that he lived to 83. That's a really long time on top of being sick towards the end. He was, apparently, a fighter not only for his life but for those lives he did not know but cared about.
It is always sad to lose someone but remembering them and what they stood for and continuing their causes will make them continue to live on in a way that they could be and would be proud of.

Being an Aries type myself, this man has been an
inspiration and a personal Hero all my life. And he is still my Hero. Because he's only physicaly deceased which is anything but dead. Just a whole lot harder to to talk to. I'll 2nd that emotion,Paul Newman is one of the most noble and honorable souls ever to have graced this Earth.Heaven will be receiving a most kind
and gentle soul today because they will be re-receiving one of their own.The Sun is exalted in Aries. And whenever you see a truely good soul born under this Constellation you know it was the angels themselves who sent him to Earth to indeed be a beacon of light for all of us to immitate. He didn't need to be taught how to be good. An angel is the best of essence there is because angels are messengers of God.I didn't need to meet him personaly to know him.because Paul was/is allways my mentor and friend. In recognition of you, buddy, being one of your kindred I know you'll hold the door open for me when I arrive back home too.Like our April birthstone diamonds are forever. - 3 years ago

"Good night, sweet Prince, may clouds of angels sing thee to thy rest."
Parting is such sorrow, not sweet at all for those of us left behind. However, trying to find some consolation for the loss of someone we really loved, it helps to consider that not only the priceless performances but the charitable organizations he left us will cause us to lift up his name in all honor and praise, forever. Condolences to his friends and family, who were blessed to have gone through life with such a man
You bet I'll make a contribution to the Hole in the Wall Foundation. - 3 years ago

May Mr. Paul Newman Rest In Peace.
For all the wonderful things that he has accomplished as an actor, philanthropist and humanitarian I am most impressed with his successful marriage to Joanne Woodward. He seemed to rise above the "hey look at me save the world mentality" and truly evolve to a level of consciousness that few ever reach.
He cared not only about the about the world around him, but the people living in it. He got it, few of us ever do.
RIP Mr. Newman thanks for the movies, the memories and for the shining example of living a full and dignified life. Salute!

I cannot even imagine the kind of pain and anguish his family must be under right now. What a remarkable human being. He left this world a little better than when he came in, which is what every human being should strive to do. My condolences to all of his loved ones.

I am deeply saddened by the passing of Paul Newman. He was a wonderful man. Yes, he was a fascinating actor. But what I will remember most about him is his generosity of self, time and money. It doesn't surprise me that he left so much to charity. Even in death he is a blessing to those in need. God bless his family and friends as they grieve his passing. May they also celebrate his life.

Paul Newman was a man to emulate and a man who commanded respect. He has been a true leader is showing millions of Americans how one can lead a life full of commitment to causes he believes in. He brought us joy in film, in his dedication to making this earth a better place. His is an enduring legacy of caring and fighting for what he believed in.
My husband and I share our sorrow and tears and extend our best wishes to his family and friends.

newmansown.com has a tribute to Paul Newman.
"We Remember the Life & Legacy of our Founder.
We celebrate the inspirational life of our founder Paul L. Newman and honor his legacy with our dedication to the continued success of Newman's Own.
For 25 years, we at Newman's Own have had a front row seat to watch Paul's entrepreneurial brilliance, humor, and compassion at work helping those in need. Our company motto, "Shameless Exploitation in Pursuit of the Common Good," was Paul's vision for Newman's Own and it is a philosophy we are proud to continue.
Paul occasionally referred to Newman's Own as the 'joke that got out of control' and would express astonishment at its success. Despite this humorous approach, Paul was committed to the company's business and to providing top-notch quality – he brought all-natural food products to a wide audience long before it was fashionable. And he was one of the greatest recyclers, giving back to charity all the money he earned from the sale of Newman's Own products.
Shameless Exploitation in Pursuit of the Common Good
Newman's Own has grown into a powerful and lasting expression of Paul Newman's generosity. The Company has generated over $250 million in proceeds that have been donated by Paul Newman and the Newman's Own Foundation to thousands of charities worldwide. Particularly close to his heart were the Hole in the Wall Camps, now the leading global family of camps for children with life-threatening illnesses, which Paul started over 20 years ago.
Today, Newman’s Own is a thriving company with hundreds of millions of dollars in annual revenue. As always, all profits are donated to charity through Newman's Own Foundation. We will miss Paul, but we will honor his vision for the Common Good through dedicated stewardship of his company that will perpetuate his philanthropic legacy. Paul wouldn’t have it any other way."
