While it is easier for gay and lesbian actors and actresses to be out in public than it was only 10 years ago, they are still not getting starring rolls in proportion to their presence in Hollywood. Actors are acutely aware that public perception is part of the marketability, and so are producers, directors, and casting agents. Gay and lesbian actors are faced with making difficult decision such as how out they should be. It becomes a difficult balancing act that can adversely affect their careers if not done properly. In this NY Times article, they investigate the challenges and successes gays and lesbians find in Hollywood.

    • This link connects to an article that mentions openly-gay actor Chad Allen and his gay detective movies. However, it does not mention what they are. Two movies have been made so far with Chad Allen playing gay detective Donald Strachey. They are titled "Third Man Out" and "Shock to the System." There are two more in the series that being readied for release. They are "On The Other Hand, Death" and "Ice Blues." The first two movies are out on DVD, and one can find them at any of the on-line stores such as Amazon.
Whilst he is not an actor, but a director, openly-gay director Jonas Markowitz has made a wonderful new movie that draws on his personal experiences of growing up gay--and hiding it from his best friend--in Southern California. It is one of those movies that makes you feel good, positive, happy and upbeat after watching it, and with what is happening with gay rights in California right now, it has a good message. It, also, features a great soundtrack with songs by singer Shane Mack. The name of the movie is "Shelter," and if you are interested in a feel-good about gays in southern California, this is one to watch. Like the movies with Chad Allen, it, too, is out on DVD.
