Richard Dreyfuss Slams "W" Movie, Calls Stone A Fascist (VIDEO)

Richard Dreyfuss appeared on "The View" to publicize "W.," in which he plays Dick Cheney, but ended up criticizing the film and director Oliver Stone instead.

When asked why he made the film, he said he did it for "money." Dreyfuss also said, "I think it's 6/8ths of a great film."

Asked how it was to work with Oliver Stone, he said "imagine working for Sean Hannity... you can be a fascist, even when you're on the left."

He also said he isn't sure the film "will have any historical legs."

That and more pointed criticism in the clip at the link, with a bonus awkward moment at the end.

    • Here's the video for anyone who missed it the first time around. And judging by some comments, that's a lot of people.

But seriously: this entry at the Huffington Post is just idiocy.

Apart from his personal beef with the director, Dreyfuss simply said he didn't like the writing in the film -- it was, by his estimation, *too* empathetic, even "shockingly empathetic." Dreyfuss felt that the movie didn't properly convey how terrified the American people are of George W. Bush, or why. There was no lens. For that reason, he said, the movie probably wouldn't have "historic legs."

Dreyfuss's criticism matches what most film critics have said. Scott May of the Columbia Tribune wrote, "...I have to criticize Stone for not going far enough, leaving some of Bush’s greatest missteps completely out of the picture, from his highly suspect 2000 presidential win to his pathetic response to Hurricane Katrina. His advisers also are shown in a more favorable light than most of them deserve."

    • The film has already disappeared from theatres. I think it was a pretty good clip. He did it for money, we all do some dumb things for some extra cash.

    • I don't know about the fascist comment, but the movie was indeed 6/8th's of a great film. Maybe Stone felt that "we" didn't need to be a character since we were currently still living within the context of the story. Still, the movie probably WON'T have legs ten years from now. (I don't remember much of a "we" in "Nixon" either, though, and it feels okay.)

Dreyfuss didn't do a very good job of promoting the film, but hats off to him for speaking his mind about the project while the project was still out.

    • It seems everyone is attacking Dreyfuss in the comment section. The man did a job he's not proud of for money. How many of you can say that? I know I can (nothing sexual). He feels the movie should have been done differently. I haven't even seen it yet, but I can just about imagine how watered down the plot is, compared to the reality of what has conspired over the last decade and so on. Oliver Stone made another "J.F.K" with as much truth, if as much.

    • everyone should actually view the clip before commenting. The title,as numinant points out, is misleading and also, it makes dreyfus sound like an asshole.

    • I thought the film was good. It neither bashed nor praised Bush too much. It did just as it should and told a story and left it to the people to decide.

I like it mainly because it showed how important it is to have people that are smart on your cabinet. People that will do well when not watched like you need to watch a two year old. Bush failed on that account....tremendously.

I agree there is great acting and it's mainly done by Josh Brolin. If he doesn't score an Oscar nod for that performance.....people are blind to how much talent that actually took. Think god that Christian Bale baled.

    • ...after watching the clip I feel that I was too harsh on Dreyfuss in an earlier response....calling him a whore....he seems more like a school girl that had her virtue stolen by someone misrepresenting themself and their true motivations...so I guess lying is the oldest profession...and I agree with Dreyfuss that Stone missed on the true depiction of George Bush...Golden Ruler...Will

Are you going to the link? I didn't have any trouble with it. Sometime you can get them to come better if you go to where it is posted in the voting area. Like news and politics. I still haven't seen the film. I have to quit reading all of these post or I'll end up waiting for the dvd to come out.

    • Dreyfuss needs to shut it. Wait till after the film has had a chance. It's so disrespectful to all the people who worked on the film.

    • He did a movie that went against his beliefs for money...
It's clear why he's defending Bush then. If he had any integrity, he's support the film.

It doesn't help your credibility when you admit to being a sellout.

    • Well if Dreyfuss feels that way about the picture then he should send what he was paid back and not take any more money for his part in the picture, why did he take the part to begin with and now suddenly grow a conscious, no he just wanted a bigger share of the profits and they told him to take a hike.

    • ..when you get asked to be part of something...you have choices...and reasons for those choices....and you must live with those choices....if you do something for financial gain when you do not agree with it.....well...there is a name for that.....and it is said to be the oldest profession....unless you count liars.....Golden Ruler...Will

    • fascist - defined
–noun 1. a person who believes in or sympathizes with fascism.
      2. (often initial capital letter) a member of a fascist movement or party.
      3. a person who is dictatorial or has extreme right-wing views.

I whip this out every time I see someone using the f-word whether they were right about the usage or not. In this case, correct usage.
