Family guy creator claims science is "undervalued and degraded"

The project, called the Science and Entertainment Exchange, will be run by the writer of 'The Physics of the Buffyverse' and has been labelled by Family Guy creator Seth MacFarlane as 'vitally important.' The screenplay writer of The Empire Strikes back and Return of the Jedi has also given it their seal of approval.
MacFarlane stated: "This idea that intelligence is somehow not cool or not American or [is] something to be scorned has been kind of embraced by a lot of people... Just exposing entertainers to more science will help improve the situation."
He seems eager to get things moving himself as he let slip that he's just completed a new episode of Family Guy based on the idea that there might be parallel universes outside of ours, and all after watching a documentary on it.
Good job Seth!

This is auesome that science and entertainment can ever find a tru focal point. Just imagine a regular joe smoe can understand basic physics jokes which could branch off his ideas or w.e. and it'll go from there or vice versa. All iam saying its a good combo... one two three four punch.

There are a couple important ideas to remember... Science is a method/philosophy not a replacement for religion. Superstition and ideas about the "unobservable" reality have led to many scientific ideas and was one of the original cradles of scientific thought.
If civilization accepts the scientific method as a major force in the choices we make, we will get rid of 90% of the technology we currently use because it's bad for us umkay. Humanity is still acting like an impetuous teenager when we encounter a new scientific advancement. We need to be more selective and less selfish. I look at my own life and see way too much waste and I make just above the poverty line. We gotta work together and get it together. Just don't use science to build a new catholic church. - 3 years ago

I think that this will be a grave mistake. I don't watch Family Guy to learn science. I read scientific journals/magazines/books in the library. Right now I am teaching myself calculus and anthropology...with books! Fancy that! My point is that people will find a way to learn if they are willing. This will only degrade our attempts to value science and intellectualism because we will not be able to get the full scope of subjects in the media that the public watches. Think about the discovery channel for a moment...Do you really take in what they teach? People should delve into subjects, not "speed read" over them.

This is a good idea as a large amount of americans(apparently) get a lot their information about the world from celebrities. Filtering it through the entertainment media is a damn good idea.
The scientific innacuracy in films is sometimes irritating, but the bending of pyhsics is usually quite fun. It's the historical innacuracies that get on my nerves. 2 words - Pe*rl H*rbour. That film...GRRR.Seth being an athiest makes sense, Religion likes people to be dumbed down and afraid of science and forward movement. It means people can't question those in power.

I do apologise it was more of a hyperbole than an accurate description.
Not all religious leaders are crazy.
But a lot of religious leaders of many faiths seem to try to make people scared of science and forward motion. Look at creationists. They're all great people as far as I know, but they deny science which has done some great things. - 3 years ago

What I find is that people tend to be afraid to have a different opinion or view. They seem to be afraid to be different. I thought we got over that in the 60's. Each generation has their heroes and most pick either a celebrity or a high paid jock to be their hero no matter that neither graduated high school. No one wants Einstein or Hawkins as heroes or mentors. They say that things from the media are written on a third grade level. And, I agree, most news articles go after a person's emotions rather than a person's sense of, or need for rational facts. Read the comments on news articles and you will see most are trying to be clever with commonly held beliefs rather than having a completely dissenting view or passionate thoughts on the subject.
To me Peter Griffin is cool, but Stewie ROCKS!!! Go, my man, Stewie. You da man, um boy er kid er, um child. OK, whatever, you are a big brain in that football shaped head. Ya gotta love a guy like that!

Right on! Now if we can also just tackle the proliferation of pseudoscience in the media. Oh what a beautiful day it will be be when we no longer have TV detectives who solve crimes using mental powers, ghost hunters creeping around in the dark with night vision goggles (and NEVER finding anything!), and "psychics" taking up whole hours on CNN with Larry King.

Experiences existing does not mean that "spirits are fucking with someone." Not even close. If someone is a schizophrenic and they think people are talking to them, that does not mean those people exist.
You are completely outrageous with your assertions as well as your personal attacks on Justin. Just because people have "thought this for centuries" doesn't make anything true or scientifically valuable. People thought the world was flat for centuries, people thought the world was only a few thousand years old, people thought you could remove demons from others. In fact, people still do think those things, and it's fucking scary.
Name me one thing that was "cast as pseudoscience before they became accepted as science". Then look at the James Randi foundation, who is offering a MILLION dollars for proof of supernatural activity, and tell me why no one has collected yet...

lol, you sound like a real artist, delilah. real open. The problem is the experience still happens. I can call it ghosts, wet paint, water slide, monkey shit, or your mom or any combination of words i choose to label it as. The point is: Science can do no better. no worse. I know you think its absolutely insane. because you have been trained to believe that science figured it all out. Science is as close minded as the church my niave little artist friend. People thought that tibetan monks claims at brain wave control where BS until they got off there ass and measured the damm brain waves changes. there are tons and tons of examples, it points to your sheltered upbringing and shy approach to the pursuit of knowledge that you would ask someone else to do your homework for you. so sorry. by the way early science was born out of the so supposably maligned art of alchemey. Newton, your god of science, with more achievments than einstein and the whole crew combined spent the vast majority of his life pouring through occult books and studying the secrets of alchemey. Likewise Pythagoreas, Plato, the list goes on and on. teleporation was considered psuedoscience, now scientists around the world teleport photons....oh shoot, you thought you knew what you where talking about because you thought that the news would tell you if it was important enough. go do some research. try to be an artist with your patheticly eclipsed and contempory slice of a soul. sell it, make a buck or two. Alien abductions reports from millions of people existing for centuries (before space ships where introduced to the mass conciousness it was elves and gnomes and shit) all these encounter experiences mirror almost to a fucking "T" the experience one has on DMT. The human body, let a lone the fucking pineal gland creates DMT on a daily basis. When it leaks you talk to little budha/alien creatures. This is documented by scientists. It happens. Its real. It may be due to a chemicle, but the experience is real. For sure weahter there was actualy a creature there or not it cannot be debated that the experience took place. only a small minded moron tries to derail the experience by running away from the truth and wasting there time discussing weather the alien was a real fleshy matter based creature. You, your face, the boulder, the tree, nothing as as it seems, this both science and semantics 101. where does the tree end...the roots? What about the water being absorbed into the roots, the nutrious dirt, the leaves that detach but then break down and re fertilize. its all arbritray definitions that large discount time and space. so despite what you so unsucessfully tried to TELL ME without one shred of evidence to back it up, these things happen. as you perhaps do not understand the word i used in my original post, i suggest you look up the term semantics. Then tell me what the fuck the definition of epistemology and experience is. then tell me that even though everything you think, sense and understand is related to an intense chemicle reaction in your brain, please go ahead and tell me that all that expereince is totally real (your car, your house, your job) and that any other combination of experience created by altering the chemicle matrix slightly is then fake. It makes no sense. Anyway, there are thousands of books on the occult, and for certain I must tell you that most people that frequent sites and organizations like the JREF or what not would likely have to do10 years of research to even be able to penetrate the first three chapters of someone like Blavatsky or Jung. So sorry. give up now. turn back now. its far, far, far to late for you and your ilk. sell your life style. you already had to the hubris to lable yourself an artist, you might as well ride that one out. The world of the occult is not for you. run.

Justin_Gunn:
To missionaryhunter,
A.) No one (or at the very least no one in this discussion) has ever said that science is perfect or has all of the answers. That's the beauty of science; we continually try to find out what we don't know.
B.) Newton lived in a time in which alchemy was considered to be a slightly reputable science. Now it's not because it doesn't work. He may have had excellent insight into the world of physics and created calculus, but he also had bad ideas. Pythagoras may have given us that great theorem, but he also said that he could exist in two different places at the exact same time and that he had a golden right arm. Plato may have written The Republic and other seminal texts in philosophy, but he thought there were only four elements: earth, wind, water, and fire. They were human and did not know any better.
C.) The reason some things are called pseudosciences is because they do not have any verifiable proof to support their claims. Until they are able to produce said proofs, they will be continued to be considered as such. Teleportation has been given some credence in the scientific community because it has been shown to be theoretically possible and can be supported by the math. If other pseudosciences would like to legitimize themselves, they should allow themselves to be tested by numerous outside groups to see if they get the same results as what the pseudoscientists have received. Oh wait, they have and failed on just about every occasion. When they didn't outright fail, they only produced "inconclusive" results, which is to say that the data collected meant nothing. Until their batting averages get better, pseudosciences will stay that way.
D.) When you talk about DMT and its role in making people think that they were abducted by aliens, the two of us are actually in agreement. We diverge from this agreement, however, when you claim the experience these people feel from this hallucination is real. A hallucination is not real by definition. They may be experiencing this hallucination, but they are not actually going through the real experience of being abducted or whatever other experience you would like to posit. Something is real when it has some objective substance to it. I can observe a tree, a rock, a place, etc. because my eyes receive the light that is being reflected off of these objects' surfaces. That light activates photo-receptive cells on my retina to send electrical signals to my brain, which deciphers the data and processes the image. All of this happens without any hallucinatory chemical interfering with the process. I can make that last claim because I would not be able to function at all if a chemical like that were present, and I am doing just dandy in the sight department right now, and so are billions of other people. I can verify my experience of seeing a tree and other things by having numerous (not just one or two) people who are sober try to see if they can experience what I did. If they can see the tree, and if there's nothing like a lack of light or something obstructing the view to physically prevent them from doing so, then my experience is confirmed. If they can't, I was "just seeing things". I may have only seen a blur that resembled a tree, say from turning my head too quickly. I may have had the experience of thinking I saw something, but in reality, I did not experience anything truly real.
E.) "10 year old girl speaking ancient caanite". Citation followed up by verification, please.
F.) Please do not use ad hominem attacks. It does not advance your argument, and it makes your position seem less reasonable and credible.
Thank you, and have a good day.

but ad hominem is so much fun. I'm not here to advance any argument.
you should look inward. you WILL discover the secret fruits of alchemey and the mysterious path if you practice and study hard. beyond all the rest I suggest that you are most likely right in your whole alphabet of retorts, with the exception of E. Still, however, your words are falling on deaf ears. my only purpose was to rock the boat. With any luck young Delilah will be changed for life. or not.
Source of the caaninite speaking child: Its either father Martin Malakai or more likely this guy named Markides...you can google search him under the magus of strobalos or something. Delilah, I used to be very close to a guy who was schizophrenic. I'd like to see you try to tell him the voices he heard in his head weren't real. Just because they aren't real to YOU doesn't mean they aren't real to HIM. What we sense, we perceive to be real... therefore, someone who is schizophrenic, hallucinating on psychadelic drugs, etc. sees or senses these things, they are real to them. To those people, it is not an experience, it is their reality. It doesn't become an "experience" unless they're done going through it; that makes schizophrenia akin to a skiing vacation or a visit to a museum, rather than a difficult battle. People with schizophrenia dont say, "oh, wow, what an awesome experience that was!"
Like missionary said, do your own research. Just because current is an awesome site doesn't mean there aren't other, more reputable sources of info out there, and NO, I do NOT mean cnn, fox, abc, or whatever. Would you rather eat crap or filet mignon? Oh wait, you're an "artist," so are you a vegetarian, too? Doesn't feel nice to be generalized, does it?

So sad to see that people are so contemporary and brainwashed these days by freudian pontifs. Who really cares, your all looking for hope in the form of a return to a nostalgic safe past. The very fabric of time and space is currently being wound so tightly around the gyre that when it finally snaps YOU will be the dry corn stalks snapping in the storm, Others will be much more prepared to deal with it all, especialy those who have looked and worked within, especialy those who are fluid when it comes to idealogy, language, epistemology, chi, bone marrow, etc....the concept is deep and organic so I should hardly get mad at you all for being confused and angry and argumentive. All I can say is that many of these things can be proved experientaly, to the self. You should read some of the billions of pages of research supporting these theories instead of wasting your time vainly and helplessly pouring over the same twenty pages offered up by science to repeadedly and without modification or imaginion debunk what we all know to be the truth the closer one gets to the root. He's right. Science IS undervalued and degraded, especially in America. Our education system is iffy at best, considering the amount of people who truly think creationism or intelligent design is a science and should be taught in class.
I think improving the scientific accuracy of the media should be interesting, I love to wax intellectual about "could that really happen" when watching movies or reading comics. My friends and I are huge nerds so we can go on for hours. Mythbusters helps out a lot in that area too!

Whenever I watch a film that I particularly dislike, I find that I tear it apart based on inconsistencies and plausibility, historical accuracy, etc. While entertainment should be just that, entertainment, I think that over the last several years we've been getting smarter as an audience due to increases in technology. We take for granted how far CG has come, we're always looking for the next best thing. Shouldn't we jump at the chance for entertainment to be more intellectually valuable?
We must also remember that entertainment for many people is a spiritual thing; we shouldn't focus solely on fact and relevance. Fantasy has its part to play.
