“The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button” review

"The story of a man who ages backwards may sound gimmicky to say the least, but with David Fincher as its director, and Brad Pitt as the protagonist, 'The Curious Case of Benjamin Button' is elegant, well structured, and well acted by the entire cast from Pitt, Cate Blanchett, and Taraji P. Henson."

    • I really liked this film. I had my reservation before seeing it, mostly because I couldn't figured how that make the whole reverse-aging thing work, but they did, and the result was quite profound.

    • On one level I don't particularly mind that nearly 90 percent of the movie is simply recycled material from other movies (mostly Forest Gump)....but on another level I ask myself, "They are getting paid MILLIONS of dollars to write this movie, to direct this movie and to cast this movie."

But I'm not seeing a million dollars worth of creativity and/or talent in this movie (imho).

I see someone getting up Saturday morning and writing a script in about 2hrs (while Forest Gump plays in the background on Blue-Ray)....and then getting a check in the mail a week later for $250,000.

I see a casting director simply pulling names out of hat labeled "Beautiful People Who Are Huge Box Office Draws"....and then collecting a check for $250,000.

For that amount of money we should be seeing something much, much better than what a first year film student can do, shouldn't we?

    • Very Forrest Gump-like but you're missing the main message of the movie. Age gracefully and enjoy life RIGHT NOW. Too many people are so caught up with how old they're getting that they forget that THEY'RE NOT ACTUALLY DEAD YET!!! At least thats what I got out of it. I really liked it.

    • To be honest...I didn't even consider the gimmicky nature of the concept of Brad Pitt being born a grown man-baby going into it. Actually, I thought the concept was really cool. Although I missed the whole middle part of the movie because I was still recovering from a huge post-Christmas party the day before.

Now that I think about it, the plot was similar in some ways to Forrest Gump...I can see that, but these days...movies have to be at least mildly cliche. I mean...there's a man...overcomes obstacles, hot cast, ages backwards, and at some point the Charleston is danced. It's a scenario that's played out at least thousands of times.

    • It was Forrest Gump with different skin on. It takes place in the south, the protagonist is a guy who faces challenges he was born with and has no control over, he is close with his beloved mother, he meets his love interest at a young age, many key elements in history are seen through his eyes... and there are many more similarities that would involve giving away too much info or spoiling the plot. Still, it was a well-done film... I've just seen it before.

    • I was unimpressed with the movie.

      It seemed very paint-by-numbers.

All the leads are incredibly beautiful, none of them have boring jobs....and they live through the most exciting times in history (WWII, civil rights movements, the Beatles, etc, etc). It's all designed to make shooting it EASY!

It's really, really hard to make a romantic movie with unattractive leads...so they simply got the best looking people they could find! Easy!

It's really, really hard to make a intersting movie set in 2009 wherein the leads work 9-5 jobs, shop at Wal-mart and watch TV. So they set it during the most "exciting" times of US history. Much, much easier to write.....and much, much duller to watch because I've seen ALL of those scenes a million times before in a hundred other movies.

      IMHO very, very formulaic.

It's almost as if a computer program had generated the plot and casting.

I mean, it's like someone took Forest Gump and mashed it together with a couple other movies and -- what the hell? -- let's throw in a dash of "The Notebook" and let's make a blockbuster!
